Solo Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail Thru-Hike | A Realistic Vlog Backpacking in New Hampshire

Ойын-сауық

I went out for a solo backpacking trip on the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail in southern New Hampshire. It's a 50 ish mile hiking trail connecting the summits of Mt. Monadnock and Mt. Sunapee. This is my second time doing this hike, and this year I decided to do it sobo (Sunapee to Monadnock). I also intended to do this trail quick, ultralight, and solo for an added challenge. I experienced headaches, no appetite, a stuck food bag, a broken cell phone, bears, loneliness, mosquitos and soo much chaffing. But somehow, overcoming these obstacles and having type 2 fun makes for a much more rewarding hike. Hope you enjoy my journey on the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway Trail!

I hike in the UK and Switzerland (just started making videos as well 😌) and the hanging food in trees to avoid bears is not something we ever have to worry about here, it's nice to learn something new and surely makes hiking a fair bit more frightening where you are! Morning Taylor! This is exactly what I needed! I am going to be finishing up the Mid state trail here in MA next month and was looking for a trail that could extend it and Monadnock state park is only 3 miles from the end of the Mid state! It couldn't be more perfect! I agree with your shelter logic. If it's too easy to get to, people will party there. Nothing against blowing off some steam, but thats not my style anymore. You gotta throw some vitamin I in your emergency pack! I hate taking it but if you gotta, you gotta. I so relate to that newt hanging onto the side of the creek. Hang in there little buddy! In the Scouting world, we would refer to the crider crapper as a blue sky lol At least they put a guard rail around it! Even with all the trail and weather drama it seemed like a great trip! You included so many good tips! I will have to do a little more research to see if I can add this one, but I think its doable! If I do I will make sure to stop by the gift shop and share some war stories (and grab a "You're a false summit" sticker maybe!). 🙏Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well. #giveashit -Grateful ❤️💙🌹💀🌹💙❤️

BIG no-no hanging your bear bag right near the shelter. If by chance some other hikers arrived into the evening and they stayed in the shelter, your hang was right at their doorstep. It is always best to find a place to hang your bag AWAY from where the tenting areas and shelter are located regardless of anyone else being in camp or not. Also there is no reason to potentially draw a bear into an area that is regularly used by hikers. Thanks for sharing the hike.

Hey, Taylor. I recall you saying you quit using your zPacks Arc Air on the AT because the vertical stays kept popping out of place. I recently had the same problem and sent the pack back to zPacks. Their repair department has re-hemmed collar of the front pocket with a double stitch they have just introduced. They also re-stitched the stay pockets to the correct height for the stays to not pop out. You might want to contact them about fixing your pack too. I have enjoyed your videos a lot. I used a small free standing tent on most of the AT. It would even fit inside a shelter if I were alone there. Kept the mosquitos away and the tent dry.

Nice pillow! I was seriously thinking about buying HMG's stuff sack/pillow, but eventually I decided that it looked a but thin for a side-sleeper like me AND my stuffed HMG pod worked perfectly for me on my trips last year. Why pay more money for a stuff sack that I don't have any real use for other than the pillow mode?

I know this is a silly question, I'm so interested in doing this, do you just park at one end and then get a ride back to the other when finished?

I've read that after two weeks of no exercise we start loosing muscle. I bicycle a bunch and learned this the hard way year's ago. Getting back in shape after two months off the AT its no wonder it was tough. I'll cycle 625 miles in 7 days and if I didn't train enough I feel sick after the first big climb.

You should continue furthering this hike and go south on the NE Trail down to the CT shore.

I get headaches too. Its hard to listen to my body when I just want to get where I set my goal. I push myself too hard sometimes.
