Solo Lapras Challenge - What Level Can Lapras Beat Pokemon Yellow At?

Ойындар

Lapras is an incredible Pokemon. In Generation 1 it has a diverse movepool and great stats. I expect this "challenge" to be fairly easy and part way through I decided to try to beat the game at a low level.
Thanks for making me aware of some errors in the video. I'm going to step up my script review and research process so that I minimize these errors in the future!
1. Overlay has an error. It says Special Defense 95. This is the combined generation one Special stat. Lapras has 95 base Special in generation one.
2. Bubblebeam or Body Slam vs Raichu. Wasn't aware electric doesn't resist water, thanks for the feedback. If we examine the numbers I still think I made a sensible choice. Bubblebeam gets STAB: 65 x 1.5 = 97.5 power, Body Slam doesn't: 85 power. Raichu has 55 base Defense and 90 base Special in generation one so I figured the 12.5 power advantage that Bubblebeam would be negated by Raichu's stat distribution. Body Slam has the additional chance to paralyze.
3. Ice Beam or Bubblebeam vs Giovanni's Rock/Ground Pokemon in the first fight against him. I was completely wrong here. Bubblebeam is the correct choice 65 x 4 x 1.5 = 390 (Ice Beam: 90 x 2 x 1.5 = 270).

Going to drop a couple corrections here which you incredible people have brought to my attention. However, continue to comment about how I was wrong in the video, algorithm blah blah blah. I'd also like to bring up body slam vs Ice Beam on Sabrina's Alakazam. With neutral stats, Body Slam is better, but once it receives an X-Defend or applied Reflect, Ice beam should do more. Adjusting the calculator for a 135 base special defense Alakazam (the gen 1 calculator doesn't work because it just assumes max level and EVs on everything while the gen 3 one allows for changing base stats): Lvl 42 0 SpA Lapras Ice Beam vs. Lvl 50 0 HP / 0 SpD Alakazam: 23-28 (17.6 - 21.5%) Lvl 42 0 Atk Lapras Body Slam vs. Lvl 50 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam: 33-39 (25.3 - 30%) Lvl 42 0 Atk Lapras Body Slam vs. +1 Lvl 50 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam: 22-26 (16.9 - 20%) Lvl 42 0 Atk Lapras Body Slam vs. Lvl 50 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam through Reflect: 17-20 (13 - 15.3%) Lvl 42 0 Atk Lapras Body Slam vs. +1 Lvl 50 0 HP / 0 Def Alakazam through Reflect: 11-14 (8.4 - 10.7%) At the X-Defend alone stage, it's close enough that you might conceivably prefer the more consistent 30% paralysis chance to the rarer but more potent 10% freeze chance, but when reflect is up, switching to ice beam seems like it could be an optimisation.

Apparently Lapras was originally partly based on the Loch Ness Monster. Hooray for our local beastie! 😁 With regard to lack of handholding, I really liked how gen 2 handled it. Cut is the only HM you actually get from an event that blocks your path. All of the others you have to go and find, either by optional side quests (Sprout Tower for Flash) or by going out of your way to go about speaking to people (the woman outside the Fighting Gym, the Sailor in the bar, and the guy in the Kimono Girl place). And that's not to mention TMs and other goodies you could find talking to folk at the right places at the right times. It felt really rewarding finding these without guides and the Internet, and encouraged you to speak to NPCs because you never knew when you'd get a reward.

yea there are many routes in X/Y that have branching paths, but not to the extent where you would get stuck, it just changes the trainers you fight and items you find, so going back and exploring the other path is usually worth it.

You can preview the stats with a single unified Special on Bulbapedia as well, with a link at the bottom of the stat listing for 1st gen pokemon. Other than that, nothing to add, great video, looking forward to the next one :D

No, you were right that Rock slide would have done more damage than dig to Venonat/Venomoth (or at least equal). Bug types resist ground moves. It's one of those annoying resists that I often forget about, so even if they're poison type and weak to ground, the bug type cancels the weakness out.

I like how you take feedback and continuously improve. Each time you put out a video, the quality of the video and gameplay improve. :) Have you thought of playing Pokemon Blue Kaizo (or some other hack)? It doesn't fix the AI, but it rebalances the opponents' movesets around the AI so that opponents don't make any decisions that are downright stupid.

Ghosts yes. Pikasprey Yellow did it in gen 1, and Jrose did it in gen 3. Right now I don't want to step on toes. I have a lot of respect for them. It's such a unique Pokemon after all! I will complete it in the distant future as I intend to complete runs with all first stage and end stage gen 1 Pokemon, but when it shows up it will be a wildly unique video that doesn't compete with theirs.

Along with you know who (a certain user whose name begins with a J and ends with an 11), I'd say your Pokemon challenges are the most fun to watch in the whole internet.
