SOLO hike to the HEART OF HELL / S4-Ep11 Hiking the Wainwrights
Hiking the Wainwrights - S4-Ep11: Harter Fell & Green Crag
It's no secret that Harter Fell is one of my all-time favourite fells in the Lake District but I think this particular route may well be my all-time favourite to reach its lofty rock-strewn summit. It's got everything from beautiful rivers to ancient Roman history to some of the most stunning views anywhere in the Lake District, perhaps even the whole of the UK. A highly recommended hike for walkers who love some history along with their solitude and vistas.

The music, the views, the sounds, and that guy that follows you around. Keep up the wonderful video Finn!! ❤
Yep, made it this far. Last September I started ticking off the Wainwrights after inspiration from your channel. It’s an extremely costly hobby as I live in Belfast! Although I am a long term visitor to the Lake District. I’m up to 43 wainwrights and my favourite to date is Helm Crag. Thanks for all your hard work.
Excellent Glenn - Finn seems like the perfect companion, quiet, enthusiastic, and photogenic to boot! Mine used to roll like that, sure sign of a happy dog.....
I moved into my cottage a few days ago and it’s been beyond stressful 🤣🤣 so I need this today and uyipppeee our Finn is back 🐶🐶🐶❤️
That was one hell of a beautiful vid . Wife and I thoroughly enjoy them, but we are in our 70 ‘s and cannot no longer manage long walks. Give Fynn a big from us 🤗👍
The longer the better.......better than TV!
Great to see Finn back!!
I've made it this far! 1. Pillar 2. Harter Fell 3. Scafell - subject to endless change! Excellent video mate 😍👏
Seeing those jets was super cool ,1000% respect to our armed forces ❤️

The sound of freedom.
Your little dog looks like Snitter, one of the heros of Richard Adam's thrilling lakeland novel The Plague Dogs.
Loving the long form content, it really is like we’re out there with you. I’m almost at the stage where I’m making up some butties to have when you sit down to eat.
Three favourites: Dodd (Buttermere), Dodd (Lorton), Dodd (Ashness). Keep up the good work.
Only just got around to viewing this, thanks, another great video and I did get to the end, as always with your videos. Don't worry about them getting longer, they're always a joy to watch, many times better than mainstream TV.
This vid was something special, just lovely to watch. The views and drone footage were breath taking and Finn is just an absolute sweetheart. Really well done, thanks Glenn.
I appreciate the longer ones and sometimes I view over a few days-
I have only made it as far as to go along with you via video. No finances to come across the pond and do any of these walks. Beautiful views today and wonderful weather for this hike. Really nice to see Finn as well. Thank you. - Ontario Canada.
Pillar via high level route, sitting watching the sunset on middle fell, and Old Man via Wetherlam taking in the mining artifacts and plane wreckage.
Such a lovely chilled video. The solitude up in the hills looks like bliss. I wish I had the knowledge to know where I can and can't walk in the lakes, I'd just end up lost! haha
My favourite fell, fantastic view of the Scafell’s 😊
It really is the ultimate isn't it mr crag, welldone for your efforts it's much appreciated
One of my favourite summits
Yup, made it this far. Really loved this video. My family and I watched it together on a sunny BH Sunday morning down in Gloucester! I haven't got 3 fave fells, more experience needed, but I'll be sure to come back with an answer soon! Anyway thanks as always Mr Crag for sharing these divine adventures
Stunning magnificent view. Enjoyed evefy second as i sit here with my dogs in my warm bedroom😂😂. But i watch all your videos as im a Northern lass living in Kent...this is my all time fell too. Thank you.
Fabulous video and so glad you finally got a sunny dry day 👏👏 some gorgeous shots of Finn 😍 she's a beautiful companion.
Thank you for taking us with you on another wonderful walk. I think cats bells, crinkle crag and hartafell are my favourite ( hope I spelt them correctly ). Gorgeous views, great music, so relaxing. Then the fun of the planes. And best of all, Finn to boot.
Would love to see a video from Finn’s perspective. Seeing what she sees and smells!
Three favourites: 1.Cat Bells, 2.Crinkle Crags, 3.Blencathra
What another beautiful video. So glad you were able to get the drone up this time…stunning views! When I can’t be there, this is a great alternative. Thanks Glenn. Ps. Finn is the cutest walking partner 😊
One of my fav fells is black crag spent a good couple of hours all alone on a very sunny morning around 6am the other 2 are pavey ark and haystacks love the walk up to haystacks. the videos can be as long as you make them gives me time to chill and watch the stunning views
My 3 favourites are: Helm Crag - What it lacks in height it makes up for in features and the amazing view into Grasmere. Harter Fell - Like you said the views towards the Scafell Range and over the fort. Kirk Fell - Amazing views of Scafell and the Wasdale valley
Another excellent video. Finn looks cute and certainly enjoyed his lunch.
Hi Glen, I'm still exploring the lakes, not got a lot to choose from, so faves so far are Glaramara, Pillar, crag hill. Keep the blogs coming you're my inspiration
Loved this one Glen, I never knew that there's a fort on Hardknott or the Lakes for that matter. Thanks for showing this with the drone shots. Nice one, thanks.
Great Gable, Scafell, and Holme Fell for me. Big up to you and Finn, Glenn
What a wonderful video full of interesting facts, humour, and just awesome scenery 🙂. Love wee Finn adding that extra little white fur ball on screen too such a good girl. I laughed at the Hardknot pass and memories of tackling that bend on a Honda Fireblade with little steering lock and worse still the leaning Cambre in the road wee heart stopping moment at the crux of the bend just glad I wasn't in a camper van 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Love watching your videos and sharing places I never knew existed Thank you and we do watch because you make them great.
Wansfell my favourite. Mortal man for lunch. Then walk around southern part via nanny Lane into Ambleside. 😊
My favorite three fells make an odd trio. 1) Grizedale Pike; 2) Catstycam ; Great Gable. Great video again. Thanks Glen

Grizedale Pike almost made it into my top 3, if Glenn had asked for a top 5 it would been in at no.4.
This looks absolutely amazing my friend! Opening shots are gorgeous!
Harter Fell, Haystacks and Black Crag my faves. Great video BTW sir.
No location known to man compares with the English countryside especially in the north. This measured look at the terrain is edifying and also important for folks to get motivated by history and British culture.
Absolutely love those old traditional farms.
Another great video. Been over in the Langdale today and completed my first mountain walk in over 17 years. Following your route: Pike Howe, Pavey Ark, Thunacar Knott, Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and Loft Crag. Legs are absolutely ruined now, but loved every minute. Thanks for the motivation.
Fantastic video with amazing scenery AND with the added bonus of little Finn. Excellent!
Great walk, that view off Harter is sensational. Not done every Wainwright yet but so far my favourites - Wansfell Pike Glenridding Dodd Bowfell Look forward to seeing more walks soon. Thanks for the inspiration. 👍
A really good walk beginning in beautiful Eskdale, taking in Hardknott Pas, & Harter Fell is one of Cumbria's finest peaks,😊 The Finnmeister as always stealing the show, just like Billy Bob on Andy & Tracey's channels 🐶🐶❤🎉
My top 3 fells are Bowfell, Fairfield and Yewbarrow. They always change though! I love Great End too! Thanks for another epic video!
Fantastic walk this one, roman Fort was excellent, especially the drone footage from it. Great shout out for your oldest subscriber. Another great watch.
Great route Glenn My fav fells - Great Gable - Harter Fell (Esk) - best wild camp views ever - sunset etc - Binsey - small but with the summit and views of a giant!
Love your videos and so glad I found them. Perfect, relaxing wind-down after a busy day nursing and so looking forward to my hols in the Lakes this Summer to try out some of your routes. Thank you.
Just nice to see the sun.
Excellent video as always with the added entertainment provided by the Jets ! My 3 favourite fells - Blencathra via Scales Tarn and Sharp Edge , Skiddaw from Threlkeld Sanatorium via (on my mountain bike) Skiddaw House and the high speed run down Jenkin Hill from the summit )and lastly Clough Head from my "sited" caravan in Threlkeld !!
Of the 84 I’ve done so far my faves have been Hallin Fell, Blencathra and Walla Crag, however it is a bit like trying to choose your favourite child x
Hi Glen, i done this route on Tuesday and what a hike it was, thanks for all that you do.
Low Fell - best view in the Lakes, imo. Wetherlam - the sum has everything: the way up; up top; and on the way out, if you do a full circuit. Great Gable - I mean, come on! Honourable mention: Blea Rigg - surrounded by beauty, and a moonscape in the red light of dusk
Your videos pull me in every time, stunning scenery & great knowledge as always. The drone shots are awesome. Great company with Finn. I climbed Scafell Pike last week and will definitely visit again soon.
Hey Glen once again amazing vlog, great to see Finn myster again and that the weather behaved for you giving incredible views . My Favs Helvelyn, crinkles, Bowfell Cheers 👍
It's ever evolving but my 3 are Brock Crags, Wandope & Helvellyn. I'm yet to do Green Crag but this video will be a big help when I do. Cheers Glen. Love to Finn & the beautiful Dina.
Hi Glenn. At the moment I would say I don't really have a favourite fell or place yet, I am still adventuring around. Having said that I do have a longing to get back to the langdales again. Wild camped at stickle tarn and loved it.
Another top video, the cottage at the start is a national trust cottage available for holiday let's. It's called bird how.
Enjoyed this walk once again. I hope to have a look at the roman Fort when we come in July. Finn is such a photogenic dog (gorgeous) 🐕 My 3 favourite fells are Scafell Pike, Blencathra, and the mighty cat Bells.
Definitely watched it to the end. Such beautiful, scenic, views, who would want to cut that short? Great to see the Famous Finnious out and about with you again.
Fin is out here living my dream life lol. Absolutely stunning walk! ❤
Loved that! I have to say. When I'm asked about favourites....not easy! I LOVE Helvellyn but that's 30 years of visiting in every season. ...but Blencathra, Scafell Pike, Old Man area.... Wherever you go. It just sublime. Long time since I was on Harter felll. I need to get back! Great vid 👍
My top 3. 1. The Crinkles 2. Dale Head 3. Grisdale Pike When I walked Green Crag and Harter Fell, it wasn’t a very pleasant day weather wise. I think the weather conditions definitely contribute to how u feel about a particular fell. Keep up the good work 👍
Love your videos , especially the drone videos ( I’m a drone photographer) . Definitely inspired me to get back to the lakes , haven’t been for a few years.
I think we've talked about favourite fells out on the fells some time ago. Like you, I flip between Harter Fell and Bowfell, so they're definitely joint 1st. Third is a little harder but Blisco and the Crinkles are up there, as is Great End or Gable. Or Pillar. I've just realised how hard the "what are your 3 favourite fells" question is 😂
My 3 favourite Fells (currently, they do change) Helvellyn, Rannerdale Knots, Racecourse Hill/High Street
That’s one of your best! Thanks
Yes watched the whole thing. Top 3 fells is a really hard choice. Maybe Pike o'Stickle for the view across Mickleden. Kirk Fell for the evening solitude on long Bob Graham Round recces. And High Stile/ High Crag for that gorgeous ridge between them?
I made it too buddy , just love these yomps of yours. It brings my times up there roaring back !!!! Fave fells ? Blencathra over sharp edge, helvellyn sharp edge up, swirral edge down, and great gable , thanks buddy.
Green Fell Looks worth a visit. My favorite three , Great End , Bowfell and Holme Fell , and for outlying fells Humphrey Head every time. I lasted that long 😅 Love the route chosen. Finn certainly looked pooped at the end. Thank you .
Beautiful scenery, amazing hike! Great video as always!
Hi I have got to ‘that point’ in your video hehe! 🤣🤣🤣 love the beautiful wildness 🤩✨🫶,……I live in Sydney Australia so my favourite walks are here ….in the Blue Mountains ✨👌
Not done many wainwrights yet, all of the northern fells and bits and bobs from the others. But of the few I've done so far: 1 - Blencathra 2 - Castle Grag 3 - Carrock Fell (such an interesting summit) Love your videosA
Another goodun, Glenn. My top 3 fells: 1. Cat Bells, 2. Helvellyn and 3. Esk Pike.
I did this fell from Jubilee Bridge. Great walk with fantastic views all round. I love this fell and its so close to home for me. Thanks.
Skiddaw via Longside edge, Grisedale Pike and Grey Knotts (personal thing). Great video
Welcome back, Finn. The most laid-back Jack ever.😊 I would like to know how old she is, though
Another corker Glenn! Great to see the Finnmeister back at it as well. Think he'd get on reet well with my Henry, also featured heavily in me own films from the fells. Keep up the awesome content! Tom
Top three is a tough choice Dow Crag, Fleetwith Pike, Bow Fell. If you want a nice quiet spot to have a kip I'd suggest Meal Fell
Another awesome video! That roman fort was really cool to see. Nice to see The Finnmeister out and about again too. And I'm not gonna complain about the videos getting longer either - just means I've got more amazing content to watch!
Brilliant as usual Glenn, and must add absolutely love the outro music, what a banger!
Thank you for lovely video. Snow White is sooo cute 😊 Enjoy your love for nature so much.
Wonderful walk, nice to see you're finally getting a bit of spring. Not sure about my top 3 walks but for me you can't beat the classic Helvelyn route, up Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge. Also think that Plaice Fell on the other side of Ullswater is very underrated
Top 3 peaks currently Whiteside ,yewbarrow, Bowfell. Good video as usual thanks
110% with you. I’ve always walked the Peaks and not made the Lakes since being a kid. Planning a trip this year, love the videos !! Thanks to you and Fin
Thanks for another good video. On the hat front, I can vouch for the Tilley brand of hats to prevent ‘crispy ears’ 😉
Excellent hike! The views are amazing. The panoramic from the summit was beautiful. I liked them all.
Well you made it to the pub 😆 What glorious vistas ☺️Great video 😊
My favourite 3 as of now after only doing 66 wainwrights are Sca Fell, Helvellyn and Blencathra
I mean this sincerely . You should be on main stream tv. Mate hat off to you , one of yr best videos! Class👍
One of your best here Glenn.. Totally stunning and with Finn aswell....cant wait to get back up there in a couple of weeks👍🏻😁👍🏻
I made it to the end of your video. I know it's not the thing to do but I like all of them that I have walked to with you, sometimes with Finn on your beautiful videos. Let me think about it.
What an adventure. So much beauty and your sweet companion joining you. Thank you for taking us along, Glenn.
Love the long videos, been watching this one on and off since Sunday. 3 top fells, Pike O'Blisco, Cat Bells and Haystacks. You should ask for top 3 waterfalls, mine are Newlands Waterfall below Dale Head, Whorneyside Force and Sour Milk Ghyll, Easedale.
Great channel. Super relaxing brilliant content.
Yeah made it this far, brilliant video Glenn and good to see the finmeister. Not done thay many but my top three fells (so far) are Harrison Stickle, Gowbarrow and Cat bells, enjoyed them all and the views were stunning 👍
Magnificent views, Finn, herdies, and, of course, Glenn waffling; what more could I ask for? What a great hike.
In a pinch you can tuck earlobes into the sides of a baseball cap to give a measure of protection from the sun.
Can't imagine stopping one of your videos before the end, much too captivating. 22:55 Surely before your time? I've actually been watching some nostalgic episodes of The Six Million Dollar Man recently, Finn would have made a fine addition to the cast.
