Hannah the paper on the insulation needs to go on the other side, facing inside the house. Otherwise the moisture gets trapped, down the line you could have problems with mold. That would be among the more serious problems to have. When I was a teacher I had mold in the walls of my classroom and it gave me a chronic, hacking cough. People who point these things out are trying to prevent you from needing to make costly repairs down the line! We are not trying to make fun of your hard work! I am so impressed by your initiative, determination, and creativity in making these upgrades to your cabin(s).

This! More than anything, though, I worry about using plastic sheets as vapor/moisture barriers. Plastic locks in moisture, which eventually leads to mold problems. Air is always the best insulator. Hopefully there is an attic on top of that ceiling, because it's not a good idea to make the insulation too compact. No matter what there will be condensation coming in through the roof and it's best to have airflow there for the house to breathe. Same goes with the basement and walls, airflow and natural materials. I'm studying about old house renovation for my own 100 year old homestead and love to get inspired by Hannah's projects. Hope this helps her or anyone else. Stay healthy and happy

Hannah my hubby is a carpenter and was a building official inspector . The paper does usually go on the outside but it’s mostly just a convenience thing for stapling. Paper can get moldy and start a process of wood rotting unfortunately, that’s the biggest concern with paper facing the wrong way. When fiberglass faces the roof - there’s space for air to travel and not get “stuck”, when paper faces outside - it will trap all the moist from air and plastic will just keep that moist inside in the pocked. When rotting and molding starts, then it can be it’s a huge roof and wall repair and big health risk. It’s really unfortunate because Hannah did such a great and neat job, but redoing it now will save her a lot of trouble later.

@@wellhello1603 I will say we live in Az so that probably makes a huge difference. It is very dry here unlike where Hannah is. So what you say may very well be true. We are not building cabins here. My hubby may have answered differently if he knew the specifics of her climate. Good point better to correct it now but she pretty far along. Mold is nothing to mess with. It can destroy your health. Thanks for your input. Hopefully Hannah can take this into consideration. Her health is very important.

I'm just saying this out of concern, not to criticize, YOU ROCK! If it is in fact the case it's an easy fix, just go on the roof and nail them back in...if they went through the shingles nail them back in and put some black roof caulking over the holes.

Hannah, I'm sure other people have comments about this already, but the insulation is backwards. The paper has a little bit of an overhang along the sides to staple to studs. Up here you obviously need the vapor barrier, but down south that paper is as good as vapor barrier I think. Anyway it should to be sealed along all the edges with a black tarish stuff in a big old tube. Idk what it's called, but I call it black death😅. Either way, the jobs getting done. I wish I could help you! Oh! I was thinking the nails you hammered up into the boards should be checked on the roof incase you popped up shingles or something. Then that got me thinking that you could put hard foam on the roof.. yeah, sorry I'll stop

I was waiting for someone to mention the vapour barrier needs to be sealed...you are working really hard Hannah and it looks great but a vapour barrier is a membrane, kind of like skin...that should not have holes large enough to take in water/vapour...and this one is full of enormous holes and gaps! That leaves your walls and insulation prone and vulnerable to mold and rot. Hope that isn't discouraging and you're taking this in as information for next time :)

Regardless of whether fiberglass insulation is installed in a wall, attic, or crawlspace; the paper facing should always face toward the inside of the home. That's because the paper contains a layer of asphalt adhesive which prevents water vapor from passing through it.

It varies by location, depends on how hot it gets, moisture, etc. Provided she installs a vapor barrier, it can work. W/o more info, re: humidity, etc, it's safe to assume that this could also work. Let's see if she puts baffles in the attic, stapled to the plywood on the roof to help airflow/avoid sweating. My ex-husband & I had a commercial reno co (he still has it), doing all but exterior in FL, & everything is diff - high humidity, lots of concrete block, & lots of interior finishing lol. Current husband is a homebuilder, & we live in NC. He said it just depends. One suggestion he had was to have paper on both sides of the insulation, depending on your location. I've never Googled where Hannah lives. Could you pls elaborate re: double-sided paper, just curious. Also, is her vapor barrier on the inside not allowing breathing, thus your concern is sweating? Again, just curious:) I can punch out all interior finishes, but the carpenter's always did any framing prior, of course, which I had nothing to do with punching out except trim - just the paint/holidays, texture, tiling, fretboard tub surrounds - all but electrical & plumbing. We did tons of Laquintas from FL to TX, + several other hotel chains here n there, & mainly kept to the south. Only northern hotel was Barclay Suites in Chicago due to union strikes, so our FL bous were called 'scabs' - never encountered that before! Can't describe how frustrating it was for me to go to Home Depot to clean them out of certain materials - I was called "honey" a lot! Eventually, they just gave me what I was asking for to show them, then when I ordered, they'd be a lil stunned! Just a few adventure stories - I've got tons, like guys being broke by Mon after being paid the previous Fri...lots of partiers, but the nicest ppl I've ever met:)

Spray foam (canned) for seams leading outside, and 12x12 sections of fiberglass in clear plastic where the walls and ceiling meet on exterior walls. Doing a good job! Forget about it 😩😩

👏👏👏👏 Girl you have worked you tail end off on that room and it looks great already!!! You've definetly got that Fall vibe going on and preparing for winters cold. You'll have that cabin transformed by Spring if you keep working on it at the pace your going. Good to see Matt healing up and getting around also. Y'all have a relaxed and cozy Sunday!!

Just a thought. You could put the plastic up and then put up all the ceiling boards and then cut off the plastic using the wood as your guide. That way the plastic will be trapped under the edges of the ceiling wood, just a thought. Have fun - looks great.

I realize it might have to wait till spring.....but I just dont want all that beautiful and hard work to get ruined... I live west of you in eastern SD... so I know that winter is knocking at our door... and Im so glad you got more wood for winter... I cant wait for your videos at the cabin each week to see what you are tackling this week... be safe young lady PS the yard looks better with all the tall stuff whacked down

Hannah, that ceiling looks INCREDIBLE!! I am so proud of you for taking on this mammoth task to preserve the rustic look of the space, the results are totally worth it! Thank you for taking us along for the ride, I love watching your cabin reno journey! Also, if you are looking for a better heating option for the winter, you may want to consider looking into pellet stoves (so you don't have to get up in the night to add wood to the stove). Might be a good sponsorship opportunity too! Much love from Canada

I sometimes wonder if Hanah gets her inspiration from Pinterest boards? If she watches the success and fails from XO, Macenna or Mr Build It or other creators who have more experience and knowledge. Because last time I checked Macenna was redoing a whole house. Hannah could observe the how to's & the what not to do's. Also, getting extras hands like her sister or her mom to help her, or perhaps her father to help her remove those heavy items out of that room? Perhaps, some day she will want to have a bigger window facing out that small window. So, perhaps take measurements of the window frame. I can imagine a lager window and a planter box below the window [the outside]. So, it looks more appealing and fun with flowers growing along the length of the frame. Excellent job so far Hannah! Keep safe using heavy duty tools.

You really need a couple electric heaters that look like little wood burning stoves. I have 2 and they are so pretty, the "flames" look very real and they heat about 400 sq ft each. They even come in beautiful colors! They would save you burning all that wood and be much more efficient. I bought mine at QVC, but a lot of places carry them, and you would only need one for each cabin!

Hannah, my hubby is a professional home builder for the past 40 years. Sweetie, do not insulate and then add vapor barrier. You’ll have a mold infestation. Think in terms of your home breathing. Your insulation should always be paper facing to inside the room. Never put a vapor barrier on your ceiling. He said your walls the way you have it should okay.

At 7:47 / 23:43 you are installing your ceiling. You should leave an air space 1" to 2" so you do not get sweating between the insulation and the roofing boards. If it sweats, you will rot out the roofing and the roofing boards over time.
