I was a little scared when I saw you drink the water straight out of that river. Then you stopped and dipped your toes in the river. I said to myself, " And that's why you don't drink river water." Fun episode I like it when the pissed-off side of Paddy Doyle comes out. Glad to see I'm not the only one who hates crowds.

Hiking poles are life saviours for me. I wouldn't have been able to do half the stuff I've done without them. And even nowadays unfrotunately that I have plantar fasciitis, they allow me to walk much much more that I would be able to without them. So when I go on holidays I take them with me. They help reduce the weight on my feet significantly. But I get you that the crowds and the noise were off putting. I hike to escape all that, and to encounter it when I hike is definitely quite annoying.

El Chalten has become very popular, and therefore crowded and expensive. I was there with my newly wed wife in January 1998 (there wasn't even all pavement from Calafate to Chalten, so made it a bit more secluded). Camped two nights at Poincenot and Agostini campgrounds. Beautiful and unforgetable experience. Probably better go late summer into autumn. December, January and February are summer vacations for argentineans, therefore crowded.

I’m not sure who’s experience was better/worse? I hiked to Fitz Roy, blue sky up until that final uphill to the viewpoint, and then the clouds came in and I couldn’t even see the mountain after all that work to the top! I could see the blue lake and there were only a handful of people, but I think I’d prefer the crowds with the reward of actually seeing the Patagonia silhouette up close.

  • @omargj1

Keep in mind in August it's midle of winter and winter in Patagonia especially the southern part of it as where are the towns of Calafate and Chalten and Fitz Roy mountain on the Argentinian side or similar latitude on the Chilean side can be very cold and harsh with strong snow storms. The tourism on Patagonia in August is centered on the northern part of it, around cities like Bariloche or El Bolson that are aproximately 1000 and 950 km north from El Calafgate or El Chalten and it's centered around ski and some winter sport and activities or Puerto Mont in Chile

Paddy, I know this is going a little off script, but can you recommend a Thai island minus the litter ? In Koh Kood at the mo and apart from outside your resort, the place is awash with rubbish. Spent 2 days cleaning rubbish from the beach because the locals don't seem to give a toss. Was talking to an Italian today and apparently all of Asia seems to be in the same mess.
