    Please excuse me for being obvious. Seems like you a well educated guy from a wealthy family. I wonder how you would do in a survival situation. Say plane crashes and only what is on your back. You cannot hunt, bush craft, scavenge, fight, etc.. I just wonder how you would do having experience in other things.

    Decathlon makes an accordian style sleep pad for 20(usd), it's so cheap you can cut it. Then you will have multiple sit pads, kneeling pads, tent entrances, etc. It's worth a look.

Thanks for the honest reviews!

    Thanks! You nailed my objective with gear on the head. If there is a lower cost option available, I usually go with it. But if there is something worth investing in for comfort, I will do it (when I can)! I've been eyeing dyneema tents for years but have so much trouble justifying the cost, haha. The Lanshan Pro is a sweet 2-person trekking pole option at like 1/5 or less the price of the duplex. I could literally buy a car (not a good one mind you) with the savings :P

    Great gear review! I must of missed the umbrella? I heard on your streaming video talk about Permethrin, I actually have had great success with it. When I go metal detecting in the woods or go on one of my megalodon shark teeth digs. I spray heavy all my clothes with it the day before (hat, shirts, pants and socks) so it can dry. It actually will last up to 6 washings! I have seen ticks crawl on it and die after about 1 ft of travel! I supplement it with 30% Deet on exposed skin areas. This is what the militray and US forest service uses. I went from several ticks everytime I go into the woods to only dead ones that occasionally fall in my shoes! I highly recommend it. Something worth considering is the amount of wildlife you are impacting with that airhorn. With how many people are out recreating in the woods these days ungulate populations are constantly being pushed off of habitat by trail runners, mountain bikers, hikers, Off-roaders, etc. If you're walking around blasting that horn your having even more of an impact on these species which then get pushed off of calving/fawning grounds in a time that is crucial for putting on body weight after winter. If a bear is right in front of you by all means hammer on that horn, get your spray out, and see what happens. Though, I've found a good "hey bear" does just fine.

  • @JustinOutdoors

    @JustinOutdoors

    4 жыл бұрын

    100%. I didn't stress it much in the video, but I limit the use of my air horn and only use it in certain circumstances. These circumstances usually involve being in bear habitat for that time of year, on a not busy trail, wind blowing towards me, and near some sort of noise source that would mask the sound of my voice (i.e., stream or creek). 99.9% of the time, talking loudly is effective for sure. But for those times where it isn't, I'm glad to have a horn!

    Nice to see what you did bring on the hike. Just one question, regarding the Eather lite xt Insulated pad...have the womens with R3,5(new rating) and find it a bit cold for me below 7 celsius, bought a xtherm for next hike because nights here, like for you is around or slightly above freezing. Do you not feel the ground chill when getting close to freezing? Yes, I am a cold sleeper 😄

  • @JustinOutdoors

    @JustinOutdoors

    4 жыл бұрын

    I find the Men's (3.2) good to down to about -2C. I've been using a Tensor Insulated as well, which has an R-value of 3.5 under the new system, and find it good to about -6Cish. That's one pretty cold ground for both those temperatures (early season when its still thawing). In August or September, when the ground is thawed and holding on to a lot of heat, I think I could get away with even colder air temps. Can't go wrong with an Xtherm if you're a cold sleeper though, that thing is a furnace!

    I'll actually be doing a comparison video over the next couple of months. The big difference is that the pro is single walled while the regular is double walled. The pro is noticeably bigger, has a 20d material that is more durable and holds shape better, and pitches a bit higher. Some of the reinforcements and hardwear on the pro seems a bit better too.

    I did :(. The trekking poles were strapped to my pack and got ripped off by willows and the sunglasses fell out of my side pocket when I forgot to do the zipper up. Bonehead moves!

    Hey Justin! I appreciate a lot of your gear. I in fact have the Lanshan 2 tent. I do notice your places to send us to for purchase is REI. I wonder if you ever recommend a cottage company- made in the USA? Much of the gear REI sells is made in China. Recently I have made a commitment to not buy from China. I am beginning to discriminate against Chinese made gear because of their policies against their own people. Their government is hard line communist and cruel towards dissenters. Have you thought of this?

    Being a Canadian, Made in the USA isn't a big consideration for me. There aren't a lot of Made in Canada options out there either. That being said, I definitely understand the ethical considerations for choosing gear made in certain places. Not all gear made overseas is made in China though, I just quickly looked at the tags on some gear at hand and the stove was made in Korea, the tent in Vietnam, and the sleeping pad in China. Unfortunately, where the gear is made is often hard to come by until you get it. Even a lot of cottage manufacturers in the USA are starting to move some operations overseas. I try to buy from ethical companies as much as possible though and I know that many who manufacture in China and other Asian countries are very cognizant of how their workers are being treated. Something I try to do is offer affordable options for gear to try to keep the outdoors accessible. This is definitely an interesting and important conversation!
