SOLO BACKPACKING - A Neolithic Axe Factory - Pike of Stickle LAKE DISTRICT UK Mountain Wild Camping
PIKE OF BLISCO SUMMIT CAMP 709m
A night in the Langdale Pikes camping on a cliff edge after exploring a Neolithic axe factory. 5800-6200 years ago people mined green stone high up in the Langdale mountains and shaped it by ‘knapping’ in to axe heads to be used as an important tool. These axe heads have been found in Scotland and south England showing they were a worthy tool of their time being carried/traded and used. Pretty damn amazing!

Ellie! I’m so glad you watched. It was such a pleasure meeting you all and I’m glad it was a perfect day. The hard effort was worth it although I’m sure you felt your legs in the morning. You might get a taste for some hikes 😬. Love to you and all the family.

Blue is such a good dog. Being a border collie he would naturally want to herd those sheep but he listens to Daddy and won’t do anything without permission. :-) love it ❤
What a beautiful thing you did. The family will remember that day forever.

That was a remarkable act of kindness. This world is a better place for people like you
This episode feels like it is all about life. Life once upon a time, life that once was, and life that is and is here to be enjoyed.
What amazes me on all your videos is how you get through mountains, fields, rivers and valleys under sunny skies or polar storms; all without losing your way, the trail. It is a mystery to be. I will not find my way back.
Blue is so smart..he knows exactly what to do..I bit most my nails off watching..lol..scenery was so beautiful..thanks for bringing us along!!!

I recently spoke to someone about that night and I was nearly in tears too🥲
Nice one Al. I was a bit worried after watching the last video of you and Blue parked up on the side of the road opposite Blea Tarn. Realise things didn't go to plan from the off on that one where no band turned up at the Old Dungeon Inn, ended up being a little drab! Back with a bang with this one though!! Excellent footage and commentary and great to see the Pikes again. Good on you pal for helping that family out too. You've got what it takes when most other people would have carried on their merry way. All the best to you and Blue. Cheers, Ozzy.

That's a really lovely film. I'm sure that family were right, you were destined to be there just at the right time! I enjoyed the story of the axe factory as well. And the drone shots were stunning, capturing the geology of the mountains so well!

I love the story of the encounter with the family from the US - very moving. Also really love the drone photography and that last glimpse of Blue walking backwards up the hill!

Another great video, Al. Loved the pre-historic axe factory AND thank you for helping my fellow countrymen(and women) up the pitch…
I’m a huge history fan, I subscribed to ‘History Hit’ app and listen to several history podcasts. All the ancient history in the places we go, it’s mind blowing getting to know details and how old. I was in Egypt and saw the brushstrokes and even loose brush hair on a tomb painting, and I knew that the person painting it, probably moaned about the hairs coming out the cheap brushes, just like I do 😂 That’s a lovely story about dad wanting to be laid to rest at the Pike of Stickle 😎

Great video, Al, with a word of caution for those with dogs, and of course, a poignant moment on the subject of life and mortality, and an unfettered kindness. It costs nothing, but rewards greatly for all touched by it. I'm thinking I'd like my ashes scattered atop of Pendle Hill. It was my back yard when I was a nipper back in the 60's.

I'm a day late, was in Munich yesterday watching Springsteen. I nearly got a panic attack climbing eighty steep steps up to our seats and didn't feel much better sitting and looking down. But I was looking forward to seeing your video, which is once again breathtakingly spectacular. Awesome! Thank you so much for taking us along. And by the way, you are one amazing human being.
Outstanding Al lad, definitely one of your very best. Been in that area many times in the past, not for a while now though. This brought back a lot of memories, thanks lad. Blue is the most superb dog and a credit to your input into his life. He would not rather be anywhere than with you.

Such a beautiful video, Al, in many different ways. The only thing that would make it better is if a couple of million people got to see it (So funny to hear you say that you missed leg day at the gym, because every time you strap on a pack and climb a mountain, you are doing a "leg day" that would completely break a lot of people who actually do go to a gym.)

Another wonderful video and my weekend is complete.
Top bloke, top video.
Lovely video Al! Great place to camp. The bit about the family scattering their dads/husbands ashes bought a lump to my throat, probably because we've just lost my cousin. I've given my kids orders to scatter my ashes at the top of every Clough on kinder scout and a couple of my favourite camp spots.... they make out like they hate the idea....but I know they'll enjoy the hike lol. Blue is such a well behaved dog, he's a real credit to you and all your training and hard work shows. Best wishes, Wolfie 👍🏻

I had a tent similar to that about thirty years ago. Used it when I was winter cycling around Europe and it's the best tent I EVER had. I think it weighed around 2kg, so still light enough, especially on the bike. It stood up well to a ten day thunderstorm on the Iberian peninsula and didn't move an inch in 70mph winds in the Austrian mountains. I only wish I could remember the manufacturer's name. I know they made stuff for Arctic expeditions but that's all I can remember. Anyway, thanks for the upload, or whatever they are called, and I look forward to watching a few more.

Superb video. Very informative, stunning scenery and great banter👍 Really special and moving moment to help that family Get there dad to his final resting place.
Good to see blue just what I needed I’m off next week now.
Absolutely love your videos (even though the majority of the time you scare the living sh*t out of me!!) and this one in particular is very touching. It's life at its best and how wonderful that that family, with your help, were able to fulfil their father/husbands last wish. Blue is the best boy in the world and isn't he a delicate eater! There's no diving in and hoovering it up. I live vicariously through you as I'm now 71 and arthritis is almost everywhere so I could never get up those mountains to experience the incredible views. It's difficult because I was always so active but at least you and Blue bring the beauty to me although some of those with the wind, rain and snow makes me very nervous! I've no idea how my heart survived watching you both navigate Sharp Edge. That was terrifying! Anyway, thank you for all you do.

I really enjoyed this adventure as it had a bit of everything but mainly meeting lovely people. I trained Blue to eat gently as I have kids so made sure he is at the bottom of the pack and won’t snap at food. He’d never take food unless told to😬

Amazing pitch there Al, nice to see the star of the show back out as well 😂😉 I love Langdale and it is also my wish to be scattered off the top (but hopefully not for a while yet!) I'm with you on boots - after 20 odd years of playing rugby (badly) and then being run over (a tale for the pub.....trust me) I went fully into max support for my ankle (knackered) and knees (semi knackered) but found my issues were not getting better, and probably getting worse I did a lot of reading and watching vid's on the barefoot idea and have been wearing them in my every day life for 6 months now. They are my go to shoes for every day and light/medium hikes and I can honestly say the difference in my ankle and knee strength and posture is just amazing. I no longer go over on my ankle when walking and my foot/lower limb strength is really good now, they have been a bit of a life changer. When I wear my old stiff/supportive boots I get more foot pain than when I wear a zero drop trail shoe (which I do now) but I am looking for something for Autumn and might have a try of those mid height's. I will still wear a proper boot in winter for warmth and the ability to kick steps in snow but I am searching for a decent Autumn pair - are those a zero drop or not? I really want to keep with that as once you are used to it walking is just weird in any other shoes!!
Well Al, I've been to the Langdales for many years and never knew about the axe cave. You live and learn 👍. Great vid
