very helpful, thank you. FYI: In SolidWorks 2022 two options pop up after you select the chain and select section view. You can either select the standard cut version, that is automatically created just like in your video or you can directly select the modified line, which only displays the lines that are othogonal to the section view. So this new feature will save you some time as you don't have to deselect all the horizontal lines.

Very helpful. My only question is how can you adjust the depth of the section? For example, I don't want the section to go so deep into certain things that I see the whole part, just a fraction of an inch off of the section line (if this makes sense). Is there a way to do this doing this method?? I know you can with a regular section (adjusting the cutting depth) but I don't see a way to do it with this method, unfortunately

Thanks for the great question. If you want to customize the location when you create your sketch you can add dimensions using the Smart Dimension tool. If you want to edit a current Section cutting line, right-click on a Section line click edit sketch and this will let you add sketch relations and dimensions to specify an exact location.

Hi, thanks for this but I would like to ask when I would be performing custom section view in isometric view. It seems that there would be an offset on its isometric view. Any fix to this?

While in the isometric view pick a face or plane that you want the section view to start from. In the feature manager where the face populates the box below allows you to select the offset. Enter a value for the offset, green check ok. You can save this view if needed.

is it possible to add colour to a SECTION view which already has colour applied... can't see any colors on section view

1. If talking about section caps see this link: help.solidworks.com/2019/english/SolidWorks/sldworks/HIDD_DVE_DYNAMIC_SECTION.htm 2. In the assembly drag the appearance from the Appearances, Scenes and Decals to the part or subassembly and apply it. Then when you when sectioning check "Show Section Cap” and uncheck “Keep Cap Color” and “Graphics Section only”.

When I go into section view it doesn’t take me to section view assist. I am using solidworks 2021 and my professor posted a tutorial where you need section view assist, but I can not access it. The page it takes me to does not allow me to create cutting lines or anything.

If you do not see the Section Assistance make sure that it is not minimized. If so click on the dot below to expand the Sketch View Assist.

I just want to section view at a specific angle. You use to be able to edit the section view sketch, but of course SolidWorks hid or remove that feature

The easiest thing to do is draw the line you want to use for the section as a sketch on the view. Then with the line pre-selected chose the section tool and it will create a view using that line as the section line. Alternately you can select the section line of an existing view right click and choose edit cutting line then push the edit sketch button in the property manager help.solidworks.com/2024/english/Solidworks/sldworks/t_create_section_view.htm

David, as much as this video is appreciated, your use case for custom section views in this video is covered by functionality within the section view tool without the need to draw and edit sketches. I realize the intent of this demo, but for the use case here, you've demonstrated the hard way to do this without any explanation that this is the hard way and should be avoided unless you really really need to use this method.

If you pre-select your view that start the section view tool it should section your selected view.
