The three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. Particles in the particle model are represented by small circles. Particles can be used to describe atoms, ions or molecules depending on the substance being described. The particles in solids are regularly arranged and close together. The particles vibrate in a fixed position because they are held together by strong forces. Solids have the lowest energy. The particles in liquids are randomly arranged and close together. The particles move around each other as the forces are weak enough to allow them to move. The particles in gases are randomly arranged and far apart. The particles flow very quickly and randomly in all directions as there are negligible forces between the particles.
