Soletreo: Writing the Ladino Script with Prof. David Bunis
Learn how to write the letters of Soletreo, the Sephardic Ladino script for Hebrew, with Professor David M. Bunis of Hebrew University.

I'm really suprised how different it is from Hebrew/Yiddish cursive style. As a Pole, who learned Hebrew alphabet through Yiddish, I would have very big difficulties to transform my habits into Ladino way of writing. Thanks for this video!

The many Hebrew scripts are all wildly different from one another, some look like Arabic while others look like the Phoenician script

Παρ' ότι στη Θεσσαλονίκη όπου έχω ζήσει μιλούσαν παλιά την εβραιο-ισπανική γλώσσα, εγώ δεν την καταλαβαίνω. Την γραφή αυτή όμως, την "Σολιτρέο" που είναι τόσο ωραία και οριεντάλ, από περιέργεια την έμαθα.
more! we need more ladino education and learning resources. with all due respect to professor bunis, his whiteboard skills aren’t on a par with pixar. (nor does it match the insets.) this is a good start, but i’d like to see more professional production values invested in a valuable educational tool.

What are "SOLOTREO, MERIBAH, RAFE" ?

Soletreo is the cursive form of the written Ladino language, based on the Hebrew Alef-Bet (alphabet). Meruba is the square form of the same alphabet, and a Rafe is a diacritic, or a mark that is placed on the characters to indicate where there is a change in the sound in said character.

No es muy difícil de aprender. La mayoría de las diferencias están en el vocabulario de judío-español (también está conocida por Ladino). Para un ejemplo, "kolay" es "fácil", "elevo" es "estudiante" (estas palabras vienen de hebreo, de arameo y de los idiomas de los países en que se quedaron los judíos españoles, después de su expulsión de España en 1492). Además los sonidos del idioma están un poco diferente del castellano - la letra J está pronunciado como el S en la palabra inglés "pleasure". Usa los verbos de voseo porque no tiene ud. y uds. El español es mi cuarto idioma, espero que escribí correctamente :)

Soy Puerto Riqueno y mi abuelo. Del pueblo de Lares hablaba aveces raro. Ahora se que era en Ladino. Muchos Judios Serfadies se establecieron en Puerto Rico luego de escapar de espana durante la inquisicion.

Yo quiero aprender Ladino, yo hablo inglés, francés y español y yo soy judío. Se siente como el próximo idioma que debería aprender.
Solitreo with i. Not soletreo. Please fix it.

Soletreo es la forma correcta en español y en Ladino. Solitreo with an “i” is the spelling you’ll find in English.
