Solenoid engine V8

Ғылым және технология

This is my version of miniature solenoid V8. I like to think it's "the Worlds smallest" working and detailed scale model.
(let me know if I'm wrong). Anyway... I hope this can be inspiring for many other model builders.

    Sure it's an inspiring project you did. Deep respect sir ! It's your fault i have in mind to make mine, now. Some questions you would answer if you don't mind : -Diameter of coil copper wire ? -Number of turns in each coil ? -Simple iron or magnet pistons ? -How many Amp in each coil at full throttle ? -Direct switching or transistor assisted ? For other devices composing the whole engine, i'm trying to design them myself. Thanks for your help.

  • @markkukoskela9064

    @markkukoskela9064

    8 жыл бұрын

    Hi... and thanks. I'm glad you cant resist of building one. The coil wire is thinnest that I could find... it was from somekind of old transformer. Number of turns is not so important. There was no room for more windings than 2 mm on both sides of the cylinder. Pistons are iron... not magnets. No transistors. I used mechanical "circuit brakers" and one capacitor to prevent sparking. Amps... that I dont know. It works fine with 9-12 Volts. If more... heat can be problem. I wish you all the best luck and I know you can make it even better.

  • @WalterCoulede

    @WalterCoulede

    7 жыл бұрын

    Another question, please : Tests show an iron piston reaches the middle of the coil instead of being pushed out. No matter where is plus and minus on the coil. A magnetic piston is ejected out of the coil, but four parallel placed magnets (V8 in-line benches) would be locked in their coils under magnetic forces. How did you do ???

  • @markkukoskela3492

    @markkukoskela3492

    7 жыл бұрын

    That's correct. I used iron pistons and the power stroke is going up in the cylinder and it stops in the middle of the coil. Using magnets in this kind of miniature engine is challenging. They can react with each other because magnetic fields are so close.

  • @WalterCoulede

    @WalterCoulede

    7 жыл бұрын

    OK, Thank you. A pity magnets can't be used in in line pattern : i measured a force 7 times higher with a neodymium piston. I 'd be nice we could meet together on a forum. You can see the V8 engine i started assembly here : www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,6384.0.html If you have comment or advice, please do...

    WalterCoulede Hello! Yes... that is interesting forum there and your project looks very good. The build quality is impressive with precise machined parts. I would have wanted to use self made bolts etc. in my engine, but didn't have any chance to make them in that scale. My first experimental engine was two cylinder model with magnet pistons. It worked well but produced a lot of heat too. It was a bit bigger, but I could not find magnets smal enought for the V8, so I used iron pistons. I think it would be possible to magnetize them after and have a power stroke up and down... and too much heat. My crankshaft design is from Ford 460 V8 and it was difficult get balanced. I'm sure you can make awesome motor if you keep building it with that quality.

  • @markkukoskela9064

    GhostXoP Only one stroke, pull. Otherwise it would create too much heat and my pistons are not magnetized. Current... that I dont know. Sorry.

    That's nice to hear and let us see your motor soon. For slot car use I have couple of challenges to deal with: -starter motor. I have a small RC helicopter motor for that and it's just in perfect scale -heat problem. For this I could use same type of small motor as a extra fan to cool the solenoid engine -centrifugal clutch would help car to make faster takeoffs But... these all can be done.

    Think of it like there was two four cylinder engines. Two cylinders "firing" at the same time, so you need only four connecting points per one crankshaft turn. In one point: power goes to two coils (parallel) and then cam on the crank lets power go to ground.
