    I'm glad I found this comment lol A couple of years ago, I was visiting Chicago and was taking an Uber to Navy Pier. We passed by the stadium and the driver said, "there it is. That odd looking space ship of a stadium." And to this day, that's all I think it is. A UFO 😂

    But at least it's notable, which is more than can be said for a great many modern stadiums that could easily be mistaken for convention centres from the outside.

    Yeah it doesn’t make sense to me why they went with such a heavy contrast away from the outside of the old stadium that they preserved. They could have rolled with the Roman theme and made the entire thing look pretty cool, but someone screwed up hard.

    I've been to most NFL stadiums and I got to say Soldier Field is one of my favorites, its definitely not cookie cutter like many of the other stadiums. It looks seriously bad ass in person IMO, and it fits the unique old/modern skyline of Chicago quite well. And unlike many big stadiums which are either built in ghettos for cheap land, or right in the middle of downtown, Soldier Field is in the cities museum district surrounded by other unique structures and Lake Shore Drive is really nice.

    Yeah it’s because they didn’t demolish the original dome or stands and dit demolish any part of the field. They just added onto it and kind of blended everything together to keep the classic look. Thankfully the stadium has no owner and the only way Green Bay would allow the franchise to change the stadium was only if the original stadium was untouched.

    I didn't like the renovation at first, but it's really grown on me over the years. It's far more interesting than the basic bowls of most football stadiums.

    I’m so sick of it being called “Historic Soldier Field” and “the oldest venue in the National Football League”, all that was lost in the renovation and even if it hadn’t been the Bears didn’t play there till 1971. Lambeau is the oldest and most historic venue, that shouldn’t be up for debate

  • @philipps9154

    For me it makes sense to preserve the historical structure of a venue. After all, it is what makes it feel special. Living and breathable history. I get that renovations are needed to meet demands, but you have to preserve character. If you don't you might as well play all your games on the road. Being European I might be biased, but I dislike the look of almost all modern stadiums. Look at Tottenham Stadium and compare it to White Heat Lane for example. That place completely lost its character and appeal. Same with Soldier Field. They have preserved the facade, but the actual stadium looks like all other modern NFL stadiums. Bland and generic without any character.

  • @CarlosEmilioEsq
    @CarlosEmilioEsq3 жыл бұрын

    Chicago is a city with a great architectural history. Soldier Field also had a great history, which pre-dated (and had nothing to do with)the Bears. Ultimately, I think this renovation was a fail because it didn't really solve a lot of the practical problems and issues that were facing the structure and fans you used it, like parking and seating capacity. When you're done with a project but you didn't make it more practical or convenient to use than the thing you replaced, you can't really say your renovation was a success.

  • @CarlosEmilioEsq

    @CarlosEmilioEsq

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@nightspade5 It's a bit of a hike from the train, parking is insanely expensive (and not super convenient, either). And the capacity is 61, 500. The rebuild made it the smallest capacity stadium in the NFL. Not good when your primary tenant is an NFL team. Even though the Bears suck they could easily sell out a much bigger stadium. They've been looking to move almost since the day the renovations were completed (joking) so, again, the project was a failure in that the primary tenant has been scouting for a new spot ever since. And, what do you know, they just bought the old racetrack and moving out of Soldier Field is almost guaranteed now.

Yes cost would be astronomical & add years to construction but it would have been the Fenway/ Wrigley of the NFL

    As an Architectural professional and a Marine I love this renovation. The historically significant structures that are dedicated to vets were retained and preserved. Architecturally speaking it is more respectful to an older structure to stay away from faux-historic design and instead build a modern yet complimentary structure adjacent, or in this case within. As one example, the blue/grey/green glass of the luxury tower is meant to pickup in the tones of the sky and serve as background while allowing the stone colonnade to stand out in the foreground. This type of architecture is common in Europe where they would laugh at us for calling a 100 year old structure “historic”.

    Old Soldier Field was terrible as the sight lines were not good especially if you were not sitting inside the 40 yard lines. The new stadium is an eyesore from the outside but inside it is very nice and you can see the whole field from any vantage point.

    If the west grandstands looked more like the east it would be so, so much nicer! However, if both sides had a look that blended in a little better with the original structure it could be one of the best looking stadiums in the NFL.

    This was the same type of plan they were supposed to do with the old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. Basically build an entirely new stadium inside the old 1930’s facade. It never happened once Art Modell decided to move the team.

    I feel like that could have worked a little more. Soldier Field’s rebuild should have done a better job at incorporating a retro modern style for the new building that complimented the outer facade. Something different, but with a similar concept could have been Ohio Stadium. When they expanded the upper deck, it requires building a new facade that they built outside the perimeter of the original stadium, but you don’t really notice until you walk into the gates and see the older exterior within the outer shell.

    I'm not a seasonn ticket holder. I've only been down to Chicago for a couple of games. I personally really like the stadium I'm not a huge fan of the exterior but you're right on top of the game. They should have put a semi retractable glass roof give the fans a break once in awhile in the winter.

    As someone who lives in Chicago and has been to many events at Soldier Field. I can tell that design of the stadium is the most stupid design I can think of. When Solder Field was going through a reinvention, many had hoped Ted Phillips( President of the Chicago Bears) would make it an indoor stadium. Sucks that he didn't because Soldier Field could've use year-round revenue. Also, as I've alluded to earlier I'm not a fan of the design.

    Honestly they should've just kept the old stadium. Differences I would do would be to increase the depth. The field would be further down, this opens up space for more rows of seats. Add more buildings that are similar to the stone buildings with modern amendities for luxury suites.

    our stadium rich stadium home of the Buffalo Bills was built in 1973 we keep it modern and up-to-date. all these new stadiums that are less then 20 years old being demolished is absurd!!. that money the team and cities waste could go to so many more important things.

    I was once in the previous incarnation's locker room; it was WAY too small for an NFL team. Thus, the reboot was necessary. That being said, it would be better if the Bears follow through on their new purchase option for Arlington Park Racecourse and build their own facility there. Then, the new Soldier Field could be torn down with a much smaller facility erected in its place (a la San Francisco's Kezar Stadium) for the public to use.

    If you can pull off the hybrid model, you get some great stadiums. Adelaide Oval is a good example of the hybrid model, integrating the old scoreboard and hill with modern stands (the western stands even successfully retained back of the original western stands). Soldier Field missed the mark as they pretty much just shoehorned a new stadium within the footprint of an old stadium and haven’t integrated the old and new parts.

    They did something similar to my beloved Yankee Stadium in New York in the early 70s basically a was a new stadium they kept the outer walls and the superstructure... It had a generic look through it although some people loved it... People complain when they tore down Yankees Stadium but once they had the original renovation in the early 70s it wasn't the same stadium anyway just like Soldier Field it lost most of its character

    Baseball parks the character matters more because you can make the walls at different depths, have strange overhangs, etc. Football is just a rectangular field. Not much character once you're at your seat.

    I live near Chicago and everyone around here seems to like the fact that the stadium is unique. I personally like that if you go into downtown it is one of the first things you see, where all the other Chicago sports teams are tucked in the city a little bit more. It's also weird because Wrigley Field is still more iconic, so it's not like its even the most famous stadium in the city.

    This stadium reboot was horrible. They could have built a great new stadium in a few other city locations, including where near where the White Sox now play. The Bears also lost any chance at stadium naming rights revenue by staying on the site of Soldier Field. It looks like a giant toilet bowl, not a spaceship on the bones of the old stadium. Frankly, when the Bears played at Wrigley Field the atmosphere and sight lines were great. Maybe someday the Bears will get a better place to play.
