Okay but I had to say this. When we see Nico in the first book for the trials of Apollo Nico is fifteen. I am his age. You look at what he has been thru. He lost his mom at ten. He's pit into a hotel that slows down time only to be pulled out of it seventy years later and put into a different time zone. He loses his his sister at ten. Then he's seen trying to bring her back. He has has gone thru tartarus by himself he was captured by monsters and held in a jar. He was forced by cupid to admit that he is gay. He was the outcast at camp half blood for a long time. Oh and that one goddess that told him he was perfect because she couldn't make him any sadder. At that point Nico is in the depths of despair. That's not even half of what he has gone thru. Nico wasn't happy again until he started dating Will. Nico has been thru so much. And in only the span of five years. FIVE. This didn't even sink in until a couple of nights ago. He is fifteen. I am fifteen. I can empathize with Nico. But there are things I will never be able to comprehend about his past. This is why Nico is my favorite character. Because he is strong. Because he faced his inner demons alone and defeated many of them. He became happy again. He found Love. Again. And all of this he went thru in five years.

Emma Jones I completely get what you are saying. Sometimes, as in almost all the time, I wish I had gotten into this series when I was in middle school and it was first coming out. But, I was busy reading other things. Nico is a wonderful character, he is such a wonderful mix of emotions, anxiety, rage, and that desperate awkward kid who is loyal AF to his friends. I love him, and I appreciate how him being gay doesn’t come up in the first series, and we see his coming out through Jason‘s perspective of someone who decides to put aside his reservations about Nico and offers to be his friend, even with the angst, and in the trials of Apollo we just got to see Nico being happy and bickering and adorable. He deserves all of the happiness, and I’m glad that we as readers get to grow with him

Nico's Birthday is on January 28th. His birthday has not yet passed during the Titan's curse, because they mention either Christmas or December as a current event. So, The Titan's Curse: age 10 + half a year The Battle of the Labyrinth: age 11 +one year The Last Olympian: age 12 +6 months (before Christmas again) The Lost Hero: age 12 +6 months The Son of Neptune: age 13 + ~1 month or less The Mark of Athena: age 13 + ~a couple of days/ weeks The House of Hades: age 13 + ~a couple of days/ weeks (still summer) The Blood of Olympus: age 13 + ~6 months (I believe in January) The Hidden Oracle: age 13 or 14 (The rest of the Trials of Apollo books take place fairly quickly after each other) I know Rick Riordan said that Nico was 14 in the Blood of Olympus, which should make him 15 during Trials of Apollo. I'm literally so confused, does anyone know if I messed up on the timings?

solace means a few different things depending on the language! it can (roughly) mean sun, sunlight, warmth, and comfort. will was exactly what nico needed in many ways. someone who’s firm but gentle and who cares for and helps him no matter what. nico has a lot of amazing qualities but he can also forget to consider himself and be incredibly self destructive. will balances him out with his healing, light, and overall chill. they’re almost perfect parallels and that’s why they work

Nico didn't have to check on Hazel to realize she was still awake with the sea being as rough as this. Sure, the Argo II was a pretty stable ship, but Hazel got seasick from much less than this. And his ability to sense auras also helped. Even though it was the dead of night, Nico could tell Hazel was wide awake. He climbed down from the crow's nest, which had become almost like a second home to him, as much as he allowed himself to have one, and went under the deck and to Hazels bunk. "You okay in there sis?" he asked through the closed door. When Hazel opened the door, he could tell that the question was redundant. He sat down on her bed with her. "Gods, i hate the sea." she said, looking like a bathroom might be the better place for her right now. "Have you ever been up on the crow's nest?" he asked. "I get seasick enough down here." she pointed out, "So no." "They say seasickness is less severe when you're on the deck." he told her, "Because then you can focus on the horizon." After a bit of hesitation, she replied "I mean, it can't possibly get worse than it already is, can it?" Much to her surprise, Nico had actually been right about the horizon part. Sure, it wasn't easy to see under these conditions, but she somehow felt less seasick. Or maybe the view just kept her focussed on not throwing up. "Oh," he said, "There's this song Bianca used to sing for me back at Westover Hall when i had a hard time sleeping." "Would you mind..." Hazel said, "Doing the same for me?"

Nico is my favorite because of his story. He's just the most beautiful character I've ever read or seen, because he's unique. In him there are all the things that even today, in 2020, are not understood by everyone. He faced the 1940s, the dark years of World War II, where those like him, gays, were taken to concentration camps. Then he fell in love with a boy, as if life sent him continuous signals that he must suffer, that by the way he is straight, and totally in love with a girl, he always chooses her over everyone. He's the son of Hades, the god of the Underworld, and that certainly doesn't make things better. Hades didn't know how to behave, he wanted so much to be recognized as a hero that he was blinded by this desire and continued to make his son suffer even more. Of course, he then learned to be a father and he first accepted Nico. Then Nico falls into the Tartar. There was no one with him. No one he loved. No one cared about him. No one who would help him bear the Tartar. Nobody. And of course when Percy and Annabeth survive the abyss in the Underworld, they will be recognized for their merits and all will welcome them as heroes. As if Nico was worth less, when he fell into that abyss. Then he meets Cupid. That bastard, proof that love can be cruel. He is forced to confess his feelings, as if coming out is such a simple thing. But at least, thanks to that experience, Nico had a real friend, Jason Then after declaring to Percy, he realizes that he has fallen in love with Will Solace. A boy son of Apollo. Beautiful also in appearance. A hero simply because of his being a doctor, and consequently saving lives. Of course Nico thinks Will would refuse him. That someone like Apollo's son would never be with someone like him. And instead, Will will become his boyfriend. The first step to happiness. The only person who can really make him smile. When everything seemed to go wonderfully, Jason dies. The first person after Bianca that Nico trusted. The first person who had gone beyond appearances and had managed to cross the barriers that Nico had created to protect himself from pain. Of course, Nico's life wasn't easy. Certainly, for many he is not the best demigod and certainly not as powerful as Percy and for others he will never be a hero as much as the son of Poseidon. But you know what? For me Nico has already surpassed Percy Jackson only because of what he has been through and also because of much more.

Bianca, it's impossible that Nico ever forgets you.

God though! I mean, Nico grew up in a time where he was completely unaccepted by everyone but his family. His mother and sister were killed when he was still a child. He was taken from one time period to another, and he survived two wars at the age of 14! Like, lit-rally, he deserves a song more than almost anyone else in both series.

People stopped reading just because he's gay? I love the fact that he had some major character development after so much loss and pain throughout the series. If anything him revealing his sexual orientation wanted me to read more, just so I could find out what happens and how everyone else would react. Needless to say I love his final chapter in BoO with Will and Annabeth. A nice ending for my favourite character.

I don't understand how people could find that strange enough to stop reading. The Mortal Instruments had multiple homosexual characters and it is still a great series. The same can be said for the Percy Jackson series and the Heroes of Olympus series, all the characters are memorable and special, including Nico, and Rick writes them so well that having one character not turn out the way you want him to seems like a selfish and half-hearted reason to stop reading. I love Nico as a character and love how Rick touched on some very deep themes with his character, if Rick's Norse Mythology series has characters like his other series then I can't wait. P.s sorry if this was a bit long but I felt like I needed to make my thoughts known. ^_^

Not exactly about me, but a lot of fangirls who have a character-crush on NICO would be so happy of what you said is true. But sinse I'm now used to knowing that Nico was gay, I was hoping in the blood of Olympus, Nico would get a boyfriend.

I sing this to my brother....he passed away 5 years ago and I would do anything to bring him back but I can't I started getting sadder and sadder and I almost gave in but I started reading and I felt like Nico understood me . I am also a closeted bisexual so him being gay really made me happy and I know its stupid but a fictional character,a fictional stpry ,and a heart filled writer saved my life hopefully this will find someone who is struggling and help them out so if your thinking sad thought remember I love you so much and you are perfect and loved ❤

Good luck. I am sure that your brother would only your hapiness if he was here. (I don't know if this sentence means something) A fictionnal charakter can help someone who lived /is living something which looks like the story of the character. I am also bisexual, therefore, when Nico loves Percy and can't tell that to him because he is afraid, It looks like something I live. Finally, Nico finds someone who can love him. He finds Will. So it gives me hope. Therefore I completely understand that fictionnel characters can change someone. I hope that I am correctly writing in english, because I am French. (And I don't eat frogs lol)

now that we're officially getting a TV show (*still screaming*) , this masterpiece should honestly be in it, deserves to... it'd be epic (and heartbreaking) ~

This really made me cry. I had to stop and go back when it said "you were my little soldier. Now a dark prince. But even for you there is a light that leads you to another life." That is what got me the most. It showed Nico turning into a darker person, not the happy little boy who was obsessed with Mythomagic. It broke my heart as he descended into darkness. I will never be able to get over it.

Oh my gosh I just thought of this Nico REALLY liked Bianca, right? Not the typical I-tell-myself-I-love-you-but-I-kind-of-hate-you thing that a lot of siblings have, but a real attachment. Military schools and other boarding schools usually have gender-segregated dormitories, so what if Nico liked to sneak into the girls' dorm area, find his sister, and spend time with her? And all the other girls in the dorm semi-adopt him so now Nico has a half-dozen surrogate sisters who all dote on him? And they secretly love listening to Bianca singing Nico this lullaby whenever he has a nightmare?

Omegods yes!!! And then Reyna meets them, and teaches 'em all to be fighters and stuff and they form a protect Nico club and you just do not mess with Nico otherwise you god a group as big as Artemis' and a dozen times more dangerous.

I just imagine Nico sitting in a corner, humming this song and hugging the Hades' figurine. Oh, what I done to my heart right now?!

Nico's mother singing this to him as a child. Bianca singing this to him when they're alone, and only have each other. Nico singing this to himself after she's gone, as he cries himself to sleep every night. Will overhearing, and singing it to him once they're together, stumbling over the parts in Italian, which makes Nico giggle, but he eventually gets it down. My baby boy is finally happy.

I used to listen to this song on loop during my PJO phase because it soothed me especially during restless nights. Now I'm back and while I don't need it anymore, I still appreciate it for what it did when I was a kid. Thanks a lot
