The Soham mantra, which resonates “I am he/that”, indicates an association with that divine intelligence, the oneness of all. The intelligence that is the guiding force for the universe, the one that is the most powerful and ancient is the universal force and I Am That, Sohum.
Sohum comprises of two words of sanskrit language, Sah + Aham = Soham.
Sah is 'HE' in Sanskrit and Aham means 'I'. 'I am He' is soham. But who is he? Who is that? He is the brahman - the universal soul according to vedas. He is the paramatma, ishwar, Shiva, Vishnu for idol worshipers, higher cosmic intelligence for scientists, guru for disciples, jesus for christians, buddha for buddhists. He has many names in different cults and traditions.
It is the mantra to remind and experience that we all are connected and run by the same intelligence. In fact we ourselves are "that intelligence". The mantra of expansion is Soham.

PRACTISE : SOHAM MEDITATION / SOHUM CHANTING
Sit in comfortable pose with spine upright. Best to be in padmasana (lotus pose).
Match the mantra with breathing. Align the inhalation with ‘So’ and exhalation with ‘Ham’. Once you do this you will get to know automatically that mantra goes with the breathing naturally.
One can chant the mantra vocally though or can do it silently with breathing as 'ajapa japa'. Ajapa japa is the chanting inside the mind where words are not spoken. Even the tongue is stationary. But there is no rule, it's all up to the practitioner.
Meditation on soham or chanting soham mantra is the connection to the source. Seeing the each being as I, is crossing the boundaries of 'vyashti' (individuality) and going to 'samashti' (all collective) is soham. It is the journey from jeeva (individual self) to paramatman (universal self). Raising consciousness from individual to the supreme higher consciousness is what soham is.

Soham Chanting is really superb. but background music distracting and dominating nice chanting. think over it. either you avoid or reduce the volume of music. it would be really meditative for everyone. I am telling this as a constant spiritualist and meditator.

Namaste The upanishads which are a part of Vedas declare that there is only One and to realize this Oneness of all life is the ultimate purpose of life. Every moment we breath, nature reminds us of this truth as each incoming breath resonates to Sah referring to He and outgoing breath to Ham referring to I (The Sanskrit words are split as Sah and Aham and its conjuction is Soham) Every time we breath , we can tune ourselves to this ultimate reality of Oneness by remembering Soham. This is called Ajapa Gayatri and is on an average chanted 21600 times in a day Sah represents Parvati as it is the incoming , introverted energy and Ham represents Shankara , the outgoing , masculine energy. Thus the masculine and feminine , Shiva and Parvati , together denote completion of life. The Yoga Chudamani Upanishad mentions that this eternal chant is itself capable of giving salvation upon constant attention and reflection. Thanks.

@@machachaacha Both the ways are correct. The way you have mentioned goes better with Ham Sa mantra. But if your master has guided you or you yourself feels like doing so. There is no rule. We have mentioned which is more traditional. But as its journey of each and every individual, lets your inner conscience guide you. Thanks
