Soft Palate and Singing - DO I LIFT THE SOFT PALATE OR NOT?

Soft Palate and Singing - DO I LIFT THE SOFT PALATE OR NOT? Can We Clear Up the Confusion? Some singers and teachers tell you to raise the soft palate for singing, while others tell you never to raise the soft palate. So what do we do? My answer, as usual: It depends upon what sound you want and on your particular voice! Learn about the function of the soft palate and the open throat in singing, and how to raise soft palate if you choose. We will also do some exercises so that you can experience the different positions of the soft palate and determine what sounds right for your singing style and unique voice. Follow Victoria's Victorious Vocal Tips - serious vocal technique made simple and fun!

Brava Victoria!! now I get it. your explanation and exercises have already made a difference. I can hear the difference among the different levels without recording myself. I can't wait to record it to really hear the difference. People talked about that yawn but have never quite communicated it in a way that I can actually practice it. Thank you.

I have very good soft pallet control and I can go really high but I am scared to even attempt it when I feel it move to that position. I believe the soft pallet also regulates air flow into certain cavities as well. I feel it right now even when I use my inner voice when I type. I can really feel my face muscles slightly move to when I do it. I believe this is why everyone says relax why you sing cause if you don't you can't get the soft pallet to coordinate correctly.

Your explanation of style differences and the different sounds desired goes a long way to clearing up confusion over the variations in singing technique teachings available. I also like your guidance in finding how much is too much in moving the soft palate - and pretty much everything else, for that matter. I find your videos very interesting and helpful. Best wishes.

Dear Victoria, I discovered your videos a few months ago and they help me a lot. Thank you for your advices and all this beautiful work! May I ask you if you have some advices or videos concerning "how to avoid singing out of tune"?. Sometimes, it seems to me that I am out of tune or losing the melody. I try to be my "own teacher" (as you said) and to invent some exercices to avoid this problem but I'd like to have your wisdom on this point. THank you again!, it is always a pleasure to watch your videos.I learn a lot thanks to you.

Am not sure if am doing the exercise correctly, but I sound nasal when opening the soft palate as in start of yawn. But at least I got aware of it now. Coz maybe, sometimes in trying not to lose my chest voice, I am unconsciuosly opening my soft palate too much and sounds like Yogi bear as you had pointed out. Thanks for this lesson.

Keep experimenting with the different levels of the soft palate. Lifting the palate reduces or eliminates nasality. Test whether you are truly nasal by pinching your nostrils in the middle of a note. Some people think they are nasal when they really are not.

Are you not confusing soft palate position and larynx position ? The yawny opera voice is mostly produced by lowering the larynx right ? The soft palate mostly has to do with how nasal the sound is because it blocks or opens the way to the nasal cavity ...
