Fun Fact: When recording Smells Like Teen Spirit in the studio, Butch Vig began pacing around the room, blown away by what he was listening to. He was so busy taking in the song that he didn't write down any notes. When finishing up the song, Kurt asked Butch what he thought. Butch's one piece of advice? "Play it again."

Kurt played all the rhythm and lead guitar parts, in the studio. The lead guitar is double-tracked, with both tracks bussed to an aux channel with a flanger insert on the aux bus. The rhythm guitars are also multi-tracked, at LEAST twice. I can’t recall what it was anymore, but they used an interesting blend of amplifiers on the guitars to give them that saturation. Later on, on tour, they recruited guitarist Pat Smear from the Germs to play rhythm guitar whilst Kurt would solo..or make other, less musical, sounds with his guitar.

Butch Vig who produced the album preferred the songs to sound "larger than life" as in more massive with double tracked vocals and more guitar tracks than would be possible for the trio to perform live. Kurt liked his studio recordings to mirror what they sound like live, so very bare bones production. First Kurt didn't want to double track vocals and record so many guitar tracks but Butch either persuaded him by saying John Lennon (One of Kurt's idols) did it as well, or straight up lied and said he forgot to record so Kurt had to play it again. Kurt usually dismissed any questions about the lyrics and never spoke truthfully about the meanings, but his notebooks are full of poems and stories that he took parts from and put them into the song, so there was some kind of meaning put behind them. Butch definitely made the record sound next level, he produced some very iconic 90s albums. If you are going to listen to more Nirvana, In Utero is a more raw album produced by Steve Albini and Bleach is also a more raw album that costed the band only 600 dollars to record. DEFINITELY watch some live performances.

*Nice reaction - you're hilarious! A few things-* 1) FYI - You couldn't skip to endless nameless because it was on the same track as Something in the Way but with 10 minutes of silence between the songs. 2) You should check out some other Grunge bands - most of them were from Seattle but they all sounded a little different. For starters I'd recommend Pearl Jam - "Ten", Soundgarden - "Superunknown", and Alice in Chains - "Dirt". 3) Also, Nirvana has several other great releases you should listen to (in the following order) - "In Utero" (polarizing but revered 3rd Studio Album), "Unplugged" (widely considered one of the best live albums of all time), "Bleach" (Their debut album made for $600 but which still rocks,) "Live at Reading" (A transcendent live performance from when Nirvana was the center of the world), "Incesticide" (A quirky but very cool collection of unreleased material), and "Live and Loud in Seattle" (another live album from their final tour a few months before Kurt died. They added a second guitarist and sounded absolutely fierce here). 4) The Smells Like Teen Spirit video was a cultural milestone that changed pop culture overnight. You gotta watch the video to understand the impact this song had: kzread.info/dash/bejne/moiLrcSfn8zRlco.html 5) While Kurt could be dark and moody, he and the other guys in the band also had an amazing sense of humor and messed around a lot. Kurt had so much charisma and gravitas. Check out this video of different clips of them being ridiculous: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dWSo2dGQqtifnpM.html

Nirvana was the start of grunge as a mass movement, and was carrying on a lot of what had been building in the U.S. punk and underground scenes over the 80’s; while a lot of the other grunge bands leaned heavier on metal or even classic rock sounds.
@riphopfer5816Ай бұрын
Nirvana is technically post-grunge Seattle alternative rock. ‘Grunge’ is not a genre. It’s the name of a scene, same as, like, ‘Madchester’, and it’s a scene to which AIC was adjacent, but was not originally a part. ‘Grunge’ was the Seattle music scene that was most influenced by hardcore punk, early ‘70s garage rock, early-mid 80s underground melodic post-punk (e.g., the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, the Pixies, Sonic Youth, etc.) Bands of the ‘Grunge’ scene were constantly trading members-much like the London psychedelic blues scene, during the late 60s. ‘Grunge scene’ bands were, for instance, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden, Green River, the Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, and bands that formed by former members of M.L.B. and Screaming Trees: I.e., Pearl Jam. Lastly, there were a few younger bands with similar influences-like Nirvana. But the bands that hit it big in the 90s weren’t grunge bands-they went to loads of shows by grunge bands, were influenced by them, but then added more influences of their own to the mix. AIC’s musical lineage was VERY different. Before Jerry and Layne met, Layne already sang for-of all things-a glam metal band (like, ‘big hair’ metal band, much like Poison or Ratt or Warrant) called Sleze. So Layne’s obvious influences were primarily metal, and Jerry’s favourite guitarist is Eddie Van Halen, an heavy metal guitarist. However, Jerry grew up in Texas, and he was also deeply influenced by the blues and (to a lesser extent, Country & Western). It’s clear they also had progressive rock and psychedelic rock influences, but because the idiots in music magazines (like Guitar World, to which I admit having a subscription in the 90s), only wanted to talk with AIC about fucking heroin, I have no idea the full diversity of Layne and Jerry’s record collections back then. I’m sure Jerry’s like me-he’s an old guitarist now, and he probably listens to a little bit of everything these days. But I’d love to know who were all of his formative influences, apart from Van Halen. I don’t know whether I’ll ever know all of Layne’s favourite singers. Bloody shame it is. Back to the point, though: AIC obviously had friends in the ‘grunge scene’, but musically, they had an entirely different lineage. They weren’t punk/post-punk rockers; they were a ‘stoner metal’ band. That’s the genre I’d put them in. I’d call Nirvana ‘melodic post-punk/noise-rock’. I’d call Pearl Jam blues-based hard rock, and I’d call Soundgarden progressive/psychedelic/stoner rock with roots in punk and 70s metal. ‘Grunge’ isn’t a genre because Pearl Jam has more in common with Led Zeppelin than they do Nirvana. Nirvana has more in common with the Replacements than they have with Alice In Chains. I’m an old man in my 40s, and I was there. For me, this music is woven into the tapestry of my life. But the point is,nas fans, you deserve to know how it really is, because everyone has forgotten. In fact, because most humans are dumb sheep, I’d guess that a majority of people thought ‘Grunge’ was a genre by 1992: a year after Nirvana released *Nevermind*. I remember a little more clearly-probably because I’m a guitarist myself, and I was VERY interested in what was happening in Seattle in the late 80s/early 90s…but less amongst bands from the ‘grunge’ scene, and far more by:First, Alice In Chains. I was a metal guitarist, and *Facelift*was one of the darkest, heaviest records i’’d ever heard…because it was about the existential angst inherent in REALLIFE, by ORDINARY PEOPLE, rather than stupid rubbish like devils, or historical battles to which they had no personal connection (like Iron Maiden is so fond of doing). I will also admit I already had a favourable view of the Seattle music scene because I liked songs by Queensrÿche from the 80s, like ‘I Don’t Believe In Love’, ‘Jet City Woman’, and ‘Another Rainy Night (Without You)’. Alice In Chains was the first ‘new’ style of music I’d heard in a while, and though I was young, I’d hit my adolescence at age 9 (young for a lad), and by the time I was 11 I looked 14 or so, and had all the angst that came with it, so I eventually DID embrace Nirvana as well, but as the years passed, my favourite Seattle music remained outside of the grunge scene, as did my favourite ’alternative rock’ (also not a genre! Originally just a more ‘friendly’ way to describe indie rock or ‘underground’ music….though-yet again-morons in the music press tried to make a genre out of it.) bands. By 1995, my favourite ‘current’ bands (that means we’re discounting favourite older bands like Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, and-especially-Blue Öyster Cult) were, in no particular order, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Līve, Stone Temple Pilots, Tool, Megadeth, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Anyroad, the point is, actual genres are made up of structurally similar music. It has nothing to do with where they come from. And as hard as they try, genres are not determined by music magazines, unless the article in which a new genre is invented is written by an educated composer and music critic with the ability to intelligently understand music based upon its structure-its arrangement, lyrical themes, and studio mix.

Jealous that you have so many great rock bands to experience for the first time. Nirvana is iconic for sure, and around that same time we had both the birth of grunge with incredible bands like Soundgarden (you should listen to "Superunknown" which was their first mainstream success, earlier stuff is a different sound and rough) and Pearl Jam (debut album "Ten" is iconic and incredible) coming up. But at the same time, incredible innovation in other sounds was happening like Rage Against the Machine (a true experience like none other, caution: you may overthrow your government and/or capitalism while listening. start at their self-titled debut!) and Incubus (reeeeally experimental sounds with some of the best lyricism in all of music, check out S.C.I.E.N.C.E. for your first experience with them, preferably right after smoking a little weed) which is really crazy. It was a musical renaissance that defined an entire generation and it's awesome that you get to go through it with fresh ears and experience it. Keep up the fun content!

You gotta watch the video to understand the impact this song had: kzread.info/dash/bejne/moiLrcSfn8zRlco.html 5) While Kurt could be dark and moody, he and the other guys in the band also had an amazing sense of humor and messed around a lot. kurt was a melodic genius, he said he could just hear the chords naturally, look up rick beato what makes this song great smells like teen spirit, he breaks the whole song down and shows you the insane internal melodies he heard. he was a composer, but this band had a insane bassist chris novacelic, and dave grohl as the drummer. he is the lead singer of foo fighters, he said kurt singing style was called spitting nails. this band changed rock and roll forever. at the time this was absolutely revolutionary. and spawned other great bands. also check rage against the machine.
Nevermind was released 3 months after i graduated from high school. The first time I heard Teen Spirit I couldn’t understand what I was hearing. It was a completely new sound that absolutely leapt out of my car speakers. What a phenomenal time. What ensued was Rocks last gasp before American idol killed it…

I’d also recommend checking out “Core” by Stone Tenple Pilots. Stone Temple isn’t from Seattle which is where the big four are from, but they can be pretty grungy. Nirvana was the start of grunge as a mass movement, and was carrying on a lot of what had been building in the U.S. punk and underground scenes over the 80’s; while a lot of the other grunge bands leaned heavier on metal or even classic rock sounds.
And as hard as they try, genres are not determined by music magazines, unless the article in which a new genre is invented is written by an educated composer and music critic with the ability to intelligently understand music based upon its structure-its arrangement, lyrical themes, and studio mix.

don't believe you never heard this
“Love myself better than you”, Not really “narcissistic” more like, he gives himself the care and attention that his supposed lover does, and he knows he’s deserving of love so it feels wrong.
If you are this blown away about how intense nevermind is you would be shitting yourself with in utero lol
Glad you love the album man!! Nevermind is their most popular album and a great one, but you should check out Bleach and In Utero. Big evolution in their sound. Bleach was released before Nevermind and In Utero after. Live performances you should check out: “Live at the Paramount” (best version of Breed) “Live and Loud” “MTV Unplugged in New York”
You should definitely do a live at the reading or live at the paramount reaction
Keep up the fun content!
don’t know grunge . man oh man , listen to Dirt by Alice in Chains . will blow you away , i wish i could go back and listen to that track for the first time again. all time classic easily jerry cantrell is a Musical genius
They were great live.
great personality
love the video. in utero next? :]
Kurt was the absolute king of trolling!!!!! Check out Nirvana’s smells like teen spirit top of the pops video. They had to have back tracks playing during a live performance but only have a live mic. See how he responded to that it’s an all time classic!!!

It does make a little sense given that the Beatles would create entire songs based on some poster or painting they’ve seen. Kurt wanting to live under a bridge as someone with aids is just a modern version of that
I wonder if music will ever be as important to one's identity as it was in the early 90's.
lmao i love your humor!!!!! please react to more!!!!

Actually pretty much what I've been going for :) although I have a little more theoretical knowledge that I'm not able to express since I don't know the English terms for most of them 😅 But I also believe music should be experienced and explaining the feeling a certain chord change gives me is as good as looking behind the facade and analyzing the structure and sentiment each chord is assigned to.
Description is crazy 😭
OMG HE DID BLEACH IM GONNA WATCG IT AFTER THIS
You need to do Pearl Jam's 10. Pearl jam was one of the other starting bands of the 90's grunge
