The whole Lotus album is a masterpiece!
Oh, Soen! The band deserves more attention! They started sounding similar to Tool, but then found their own style, often more aggressive.

Oh yeah. They had a sort of "Tool with opeth chord progression" thing going on at first, but they really came into their own and by their 3rd album, Soen really found their own sound and style and have just kept getting better since.

Always enjoy some SOEN. Their style really uplifts my spirits when I'm down. Edited: Joel's (not Martin's) voice is very magnetic.

I had actually never heard this band before but, now I'm intrigued.
This album is complete fire. I highly suggest "God's Acre" by Soen.

God's Acre is the best Soen song IMHO.
Martin Lopez is my drumming Mecca. His work in Opeth had me learning rudiments on desktops with pencils for 10 years before I could finally have a drum set in my life.
Soen - Savia Song that has hit me in multiple different parts of my life, the whole Cognitive album is great, and the cover art of the album is a cherry on top of the cake.
One of my fave bands. Absolute barnstormer of a song. This record is a 10/10. More of these please. Love ya Pappa G 🤘💙🎶
Soen are amazing. Lykaia and Martyrs are absolute classic albums.

Aah Soen. one of my favourites.
oh hell yes! what an underrated and under appreciated band.
Some of their songs are a bit hit or miss but this album (Lotus - 2019) is simply fantastic. They hit a perfect balance of interesting complex prog and smooth simple melodic lines. It doesn't get boring, it doesn't get over indulgent, it doesn't get too emotional - just great fun all around.
Soen! Martyrs! Been waiting for this one since the channel started. That chorus! That bridge! Looking forward to more from the Lotus record. The title track, River and Lunacy are also highlights from this masterpiece - perhaps my favorite album of the last decade.
Hi! For the bass sound you mention: I go for the lowest action possible, fresh stainless steel strings, and agressive finger plucking. A Darkglass B7K is also a great way to achieve that sound.
Finally Soen
They were frickin' awesome when I saw them live. Really impressed by the vocalist, he sounded just as good live as on the albums
Thank you Geebz
Soen is awesome. Definitely highly underrated. They have a few gems that are a must to listen to. Worth noting that they have an online live concert happening next weekend, Feb 18 I think.
Soen! Yeah, bro! GREAT band! "Sectarian", "Orison", "Lunacy", "Savia"--egad there is so much. This track just kicks so much ass. Thank you for doing this.
Ooh getting to the good stuff huh ^^
My first time hearing these guys and must say that was a cracking tune!!! For that bass sound it could be any of the technique's you mentioned but usually heavy finger plucking with a boost on presence and hi-mids 🤘
Covenant is another great one! Soen are an underappreciated gem like Haken and a good chunk of Caligula's Horse's output.
Mid section is so beautiful. Soen have some of the best quieter moments ever.
Geebz, thank you for FINALLY reacting to Soen!!!!!! I have many times suggested you check them out. I have listened to Soen every day for the last year and a half!! Every song they have written is amazing! Some of the guitar solos to me have a David Gilmore flavour which is what drew me in. Please do yourself a favour and check out some of these songs: Rival Antagonist Dissident Illusion Covenant EMDR Sectarian Jinn It's impossible to name just one. The entire discography is incredible!!! Such an under rated band. Good on ya Geebz

Seconding Covenant, Sectarian, Rival and Jinn! All their songs are great, but I think he'd enjoy and have the most to talk about with those 4 from your list. Sectarian was actually the first song I heard by them and is still top 3 for me. And I agree on the Gilmour comparison. Their newer guitarist especially really gets that "less is more" approach to soloing that Gilmour pioneered.

@@semaj_5022 First 3 albums are KILLER and way better produced than the 4th and 5th albums. I was quite disappointed with their fourth album, felt rushed to me and too political with the lyrics, it's still good don't get me wrong...
@semaj_5022

@@user-kb1pj7iu6j Really? Huh. I felt like Lotus(4th album) was where they fully officially came into their own and finally sort of achieved the unique "SOEN" sound they'd been building to through their first 3 albums. But that just goes to show how subjective music can be. Though I will admit that Cognitive did seem to have a bit higher production quality than Lotus.

Yessss, Geebz!!! Been asking for them for awhile. Have to do Opal form them next!
I'm still here. Of *course* I'm still here. These guys have a rather deep decade of work from which to choose. Delenda off their debut is what drew me in. Tabula Rasa from 2014's Tellurian is another one that opens like a house afire. If you do anything off Lykaia, please use the "Revisited" version. They reworked those tracks after a substandard production effort on the original release. I look forward to seeing you smile at another Soen track. It's great stuff...

After I saw The Words linked in an Ultimate Guitar comments section, Lykaia was my first proper intro to the band. I wasn't aware of what exactly "revisited" entailed...what was wrong with that production? I remember they were proud of having recorded the whole thing on analog, but does that make it bad? The original version sounds pretty good to me.
Most underrated band currently recording & touring.
I just heard this Band accidentally and holy F#ck! Do I love them!!!🤘🏻🔥
Absolutely incredible vocalist! This band is amazing, every track.
You have to check out the opening track of this album ; Opponent
First stumbled onto Soen in 2019 when this album was released. I absolutely love the way their music makes me feel.
Savia The words/Tabala Rasu Lucidity/Opal Lotus/River/Lascivious Antagonist That’ll do for starters… 😜
Thanks for doing this one Geebz. It's been a long time since you listened to a track I enjoy, and it's always interesting to watch your take.
I highly recommend checking out Lascivious or Lunacy by them . Amazing songs. And I'm still here !

YAAAAAAY!!! YOU FOUND SOEN!!! Such a great supergroup!
Great reaction and love this song😄🤘
What a great choice!
I was expecting you to jump at start! You did!!! :D Soen is an awesome band!
Yessss, Soen. One of my new favorite bands.
Please review Slithering by Soen. I absolutely love that song, some really interesting music.
The chorus is hymnal-like.
Soen are a brilliant band!
You should check out Lotus by SOEN. I think you will enjoy it very much.
Fraccions is the track that got me into Soen in the first place!
Great pick!
Love the whole Lotus album, the title song in particular is great.
I can't believe the coincidence, literally just was listening to this, this morning and noticed that you had made a reaction to it while I was asleep! Awesome reaction as always and I love the breakdowns you do, please keep doing what you are doing. Love Soen. This whole album is amazing.
I'm really glad you got to do some SOEN! I am surprised at the track choice; I would have chosen something like Slithering, Pluton, or Jinn for you. The whole album Lykaia is an engineering feat; it was recorded entirely with analog equipment. As others have said, this band deserves more attention! You know I'm still here! Thanks for all you do!
So much respect for this band. Love the two most recent albums, "Lotus" and "Imperial".
Check out VOLA- These Black Claws! Similar genre.

Greta band... Missed the first one you did! I'll go watch it... But I LOVE this track. Hope you do some more. God's Acre my all time favourite
I cant believe you finally did this song. Plz also check out Vola - inmazes or starburn
More Soen.
Last 2 albums of Soen are just awesome and underrated!
If you are interested in a request, I would love to hear you break down some Dave matthews band. All their stuff is fabulous in my opinion, but I am always particularly entranced by The Last Stop and Don’t Drink the Water. There are so many instruments and it is so complex. These are songs that I absolutely must close my eyes to listen to. I am really enjoying your channel!
Yes......
Try with "DEATH". Bite The Pain, Trapped In A Corner or Suicide Machine ! you will love Chuck's music
Ooh I missed this video when it came out. Love Soen! Such a great band and I wish they got more attention, but they know how much their fans love them. Lascivious would be another good song by them to check out, or Lucidity for a more chill, almost Floyd-esque feel from them(though with a different guitarist than is currently with them).
I'm still here!
Whole album is fire
Perhaps check out Machi Bhasad by Bloodywood. Incredible Indian metal band with a lot of traditional instruments throughout
I play mainly fingerstyle on bass. But more often than not, a pick, and likely a bit of overdrive will be the source of that "clang" tone you're talking about. But you're definitely also right about hitting harder or in certain spots with fingers as well. I personally just give a bit faster, but slightly harder dig to my plucking, and play closer to the neck. That will do the bounce off the frets clang tone, classic Geezer Butler type stuff, but modified. There's a lot of ways to get that tone honestly, and you're very much on the right track. I really feel like you'd enjoy getting a bass, you always love it in the reactions, and I can tell it holds a special place in your heart, for some reason, otherwise you wouldn't be actively listening for the bass nearly as much. At least I feel that way, even with you being a composer and finding the details so easily, usually. I just think you'd have a great time with it, figuring out many things as well, and you got that seven string specifically because of listeming to so much of it in a fresh way because of this channel, so why not get a five string bass and have even more fun with something you clearly love? And of course, take a deep dive into the world of bass
@geebz is the Words reaction patreon only? Can’t find it on you tube
Aw man! You finally do Soen and it's not Antagonist!! I'm dying here. Ok, maybe next time. :)

Great song, would love to get your thoughts on some from the album Lykaia especially Sister, Orison or Jinn
Also to answer the bass question. This song is played with fingers. Sounds badass
I love this song from SOEN! Would you breakdown Lullaby by Against The Current? Love your content!
I'm still here dude
Went to see the Dream Theater Distance Over Time show. Me and my bro went outside to enjoy an intermission bowl. Some random dude followed his nose and we hit it up for a few moments. We both recommended some music to each other. We told him to check out SOEN and I.E.M. (Incredible Expanding Mindfuck). He gave us a cone paper rolled joint for the share. Good shit man. The react and the cone 😎
Aloha! Please do Gorod- Transcendence! Incredible composition. Amazing bass. Pretty please?
Love your decomposing - please check out Borknagar - Thunderous!
Soen - Lotus Soen - Lucidity
There are a lot of ways to get sort of more attack or string/fret noise on bass. Generally some type of gain helps, but it can also be any number of things like how hard you're playing, the height of your action, the string gauge and tuning. TBH even as a bassist I'm not sure how like the guy from Korn gets his obnoxiously clunky sound, I've always wondered haha
Geebz, still (here) waiting on "Strut" or "Mukduk" by Arch Echo. 😞
