The big 3 before Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Not sure how I missed the notion before but Socrates was the OG punk. 🤘

Intro 00:00 A Greek philosopher was condemned to death for spreading bad ideas among the youth. His death sparked a new human philosophy. 00:27 Western philosophy originated in Greece, mainly in the city of Athens. It was influenced by the different terrains, food production, cultural exchanges, and so on that gave rise to spiritualism in the East and rationalism in the West. 01:08 The first known Greek philosopher was Thalis of Militus, who used reason to predict the weather and make a lot of money and emphasized rationality to understand and manipulate nature to benefit humans. 01:49 A notable philosopher was Pythagoras, who argued that the world is run by mathematical rules. Parmenides also argued that human experience often contradicts logical thinking. Socrates 02:40 Socrates, the ancient Greek dude who lived between 469 and 399 BCE, developed a robust philosophical method to understand life's meaning and expose dogmas. His questioning or dialectical method became the basis of the modern scientific method. 03:30 Socrates questioned the purpose of life itself and said that ignorance wasn't bliss, just stupid and unworthy. This massive psychological shift changed how people saw the world and themselves. 04:43 Socrates narrowed the scope of Western philosophy into one single truth, which became the cornerstone of Western Philosophy for almost 2,500 years until the German Nich questioned it, Paving the way for postmodernism that believed in multiple truths. Plato 05:40 Plato argued that we all have a perfect idea of something, but it only exists in our minds. Our chairs are just models of an ideal chair that only exists in our minds. 06:47 Plato's philosophy is counterintuitive because it says that we have an innate knowledge of the world from birth, and we are just recalling the things already stored inside us. 07:25 Plato's idea of knowledge coming from inside us can be interpreted as the subconscious or yungan collective subconscious deeply embedded in us from our evolutionary past. 08:36 Plato had strong opinions about politics and argued that philosophers were better suited to rule society as a republic. He set up his Academy to cultivate the best minds of a generation. 09:20 Plato is called the idealist philosopher, but his student Aristotle went a different route towards practical knowledge. Aristotle provided a basis for modern Western philosophy: a progressive per perfectionist vision of Truth. Aristotle 10:21 Aristotle argued that truth is in the real world, not inside us. He went to the fields to study animals and see creatures, and questioned Plato's ideal form. 10:59 Aristotle put human senses to work and argued that observation is the best way to find the truth. He said everything can be categorized by substance, quantity, Place, time, and so forth. 11:29 This video explains how Aristotle's Tilos is a branch of philosophy called Theology that emphasizes something's utility or use before its Essence. Western cultures value solution to problems, efficiency, and pragmatism that make things better. 12:20 Aristotle's Tillo coincided with a Christian view that we are heading towards an apocalypse or Heaven, a perfectionist Utopia where you're happy and blissful, and science. 12:50 Alexander the Great took his theological teachings and set up a school called Lum where he gathered all the best minds of his generations to study. Epicurus 13:30 Epicurus understood that the fear of death is irrational because we do not know death and nobody has returned from Death to tell us what it is. Instead of worrying about death, we should make the most of this life by spreading peace and happiness among others. 14:23 Epicurus' philosophy was adapted into utilitarianism to maximize happiness for the majority of people, but Socrates questioned people on the streets of Athens to critically examine things in life, while Plato sat inside a cave not literally and asked himself about the ideal form that may have come from God or the human mind.

What a fascinating journey through the origins of Western philosophy! Your breakdown of Socrates' dialectical method, Plato's idealism, and Aristotle's empirical approach was enlightening

You need to go deep before generalising Eastern philosophy. There is a lot of material where rationalistic philosophy is given. Yes, the reason may be outdated by current standards but the foundation is there.

Well if Thales of Miletus was a businessman - as you understand- and not one of the important of Pre-Socratic philosophers, who among others said “know thyself”. And if Pythagoras was only a mathematician, again of the Pre-Socratic - philosophers. And Socrates was a Mr. or a dude…then my friend you have to start again🙏🏻 Take care and stay true!

Greeks were heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian philosophy. Rationality and logical thinking are natural for some people.
