Socotra - The treasure island between Yemen and Somalia | DW Documentary

The tiny, picturesque island is not typical of the area. It is part of Yemen, but far away from the civil war.
Even many people well acquainted with the region haven’t been to Socotra. Instead, they speak with shining eyes of an island that they long to see one day. Socotra lies off the Horn of Africa. In 2008, the main island and the rest of the archipelago were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site because of its biodiversity. The hills are dotted with dragon’s blood trees, a species native only here. The place enjoys a strange sense of peace and quiet, 400 kilometers off the south coast of the Yemeni mainland. The civil war is far away and tourism is the main source of income.
Most of the travelers who come to Socotra come here from the United Arab Emirates for the water sports - and many snap up land here. They can afford to buy unlike the islanders. Locals are worried because they fear they are losing control of their home. Others are happy about the economic development that has come about thanks to investment from the Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

Əmrah Cəfərov For years since 1967 after the British left Aden, Socotra went down hill due to lack of investment from the South Yemeni government. Then, the unification of the two Yemens (North and South) came about in 1990 and unfortunately the decline of Socotra Island continued downwards. That's what happens when the people of the Island realise their own government don't seem to care, so naturally they will be inclined to support foreign countries like Saudi and UAE who come to the Island uninvited and shower the poor locals with money. Perfectly normal human response. What a crying Shame.

UAE is involved in every conflict and in every country's affairs. UAE has got so much money and small population and they don't have inter problem to focus. So what they do they spend their money and make another people's land like a playground to keep themselves busy. That is what they doing in Socotra.

Truth to be told, Socotra is not for Yemen, its kind of disputed between Somalia and Yemen and since the two countries share almost everything such as people, culture, religion, trade and so on, they decided not to kill or lose their brotherhood over it and opted to negotiate but wait for suitable time since Somalia was in conflict with Ethiopia and Kenya over boundaries and Yemen was divided and struggling to re-unit. but time never came because of the civil wars and other hardships.

I was on Socotra in 1983. At that time (from 1977 to 1987), I periodically, on visits, worked in a joint Soviet-Yemeni-Swedish company that was engaged in the extraction and export of fish products from the PDRY. So, we sent shrimp and lobster to Europe: Italy, Spain, Sweden, etc.; and cuttlefish to Singapore and Japan. Fish, as by-catch, we handed over in Aden to the domestic market. I got to Socotra as an English speaker. I had to accompany our guy to the Soviet doctor who worked on the island, who received a minor injury at work at sea.. There I remember meeting a shepherd: he was herding goats on the coast. His goats actually ate wooden planks thrown out of the ocean. And they were knee-high to me. I have never seen such small goats eating wooden boxes before. I didn't even know they existed. But I liked the Arab: he was so kind to me that he was ready to give me his only wealth, a tin can thrown ashore by the sea, from which he drank green tea. The tea was without sugar, which is not worth talking about. Did he live right on the shore in a hut made of the same planks that were thrown out of the ocean by a wave. I see that life on the island has not changed much in forty years.

This land belongs to Somalia since the People in Socotra are mostly mehri and some Somalis , the mehri wanted to join Somalia during 1977 but the government of Yemen refused it and both countries were about to go on war but Somalia had another war with Ethiopia Nd later on went into civil war , Nd that's how Yemen toke it
