Man, that stereotype of Americans being ignorant when it comes to geography is for real. To your point about the 1993 version including mostly young white Americans playing South Americans. Well, Uruguay is almost 90% white people. In fact, it's probably more white than the US, Canada, or England.

The survivors have always said they dislike 'Alive' because it's a fictionalised version of their story that changed many facts and made up others that never happened in real life. They say it's a very shallow portrayal of what they really went through, a film that failed to capture the essence of their experience, their feelings and the importance each one of them had in their struggle for survival. The survivors have spoken about 'Society of the Snow' with great enthusiasm for the last couple of years, they and the families of the deceased were involved as advisors from the beginning of the project to tell the true story, focusing on its human side, the friendship, solidarity and generosity, and to pay tribute to the whole group, especially to those who did not survive.

hi, a young uruguayan here. i can say this history has impacted us all (at least at some extent) in our country. ever since i was little i remember my family talking about it. i grew up and watched ‘alive’ with my mom. can’t say it was a bad movie, but after years of reading and watching about the event i think the 1993 version was too glamorized or way too focused on the tragedy. today ‘society of snow’ came out on netflix so me and my aunts got together to watch it. this movie brought to the three of us an immense feeling and emotion that i personally hadn’t felt in a long time after watching a film. it might be because of the familiarity with the story since i’m little, but it felt like it was the first time knowing about it. this movie was way more involved with all of the victims, both with the survivors and the ones that didn’t make it including their loved ones. it showed their perspectives, their personal experiences and how they felt through every second of it. every single one of the survivor’s stories are heart wrenching, but every time i hear them talk about it they tell it with such a profound emotion and sentiment for the lost ones on the mountain that it makes you value their strength and desire for life. canessa in one interview said ‘what got us out of there was the will to live’. the actors in the movie portrayed the story with a huge respect towards the event itself and the ones involved in it. very proud to know that one of the main actors in this film, the narrator, who portrayed numa turcatti, is uruguayan. we don’t often see uruguayan actors make it into big films or big projects overall. a story that will forever make my heart feel all of the emotions all over again like it’s the first time. bayona did such a good job. definitely one of my fav movies from this year already.

🏔 ALIVE (1993) was based on the book "Milagro en los Andes" from the perspectives of Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa, who are more famous and credited for getting them all rescued after 3 attempts. Ethan Hawke was great as as Nando and so were the few female characters. SOCIETY OF THE SNOW (2023) is based on another book of same name and took into account of the rest of the group who contributed greatly to their survival too including melting snow for water, making protective sunglasses, the Strauch cousins cutting up of the bodies, Carlito Paez sewing the sleeping bag... Both movies are worthwhile to see!

I agree that it’s probably best not to know what happened before watching. I didn’t know anything about this story beforehand so I was hoping Numa would survive. I thought it was a good choice to use him as a narrator to misguide us and also to highlight his “sacrifice” by giving permission to others to eat him in order to survive. The most shocking moment for me was that second avalanche… I had to pause and finish it the next day. Very well done! You almost feel bad for enjoying the artistry because it’s an awful story. It was worth it in the end because it helps us understand the situation and have empathy for others.

The Alive crash scene, along with the woman who was crushed in between the seats, pop into my head every time I fly. Also, I recently found out this particular plane model, Fairchild Hiller FH-227 and its similiar companion, Fairchild Hiller F-27, were faulty. Thus resulting in about 530 deaths of crew and passengers. 78 of the FH-227s were built, and 23 crashed.

i think the slowness is indicative of how it probably felt like just waiting for something to happen, also it is very accourate to the actual events so i think that plays apart, maybe if it was made to be more idk cinematic or appealing it wouldnt be like that but they really get the facts right and i think thats what makes it more valuable to the survivors and the families, alive didnt really do that and a lot of them always felt like people just didnt get the story right but i think this movie does that and the survivors are really proud of it so im glad it is the way it is.

We tried to get him cremated at the Pet Crematorium like pet dogs and cats but were told that he'd be more in line with the human body, which is high in fat content, and needed lots of energy to burn and reduce to ashes. We ended up burying him in a friend's property instead.

I loved both movies to be honest they both had amazing moments between them. The avalanche scenes are always utterly terrifying. On top of everything else it would have felt like the mountain was actively trying to kill them. No mercy at all....but they made it out against unbelievable odds stacked against them. Its beyond a miracle and will let you know just how much the body wants to survive.

Alive was so bad. Literally taking away Latin-American, let alone Uruguayan small opportunities for representation in media. It was so shallow and ignorant to the real people, humanity, tragedy and survivalism of this devastation. Society of the snow is definitely one of my new favorite movies, and I’m not ashamed or anything of that, because it is not to be so. It was a great portrayal of humans survival will. Finally a movie with real dialogue and dialectic Spanish, and real looking characters. Real people and real stories told phenomenally on screen. - a Uruguayan

Eh but half the cast in Alive was played by Latin people. At the time Alive was made they wanted it to have a wide audience so put a big star as the lead and made it in English, but that's not a reason to hate it. Before the Internet was widely used people often didn't watch foreign language anything, it's just a sad fact and often it was seen as pretentious if you did watch foreign language films. So the producers made a pragmatic choice for the time so the story would reach a larger Audience. Unfortunately some Americans wouldn't watch something without an American either, so this was how it was done at the time. Both of these movies are really good in their own ways. They both made an impact on me in different ways.

@@Thecuriousincident1 No they’re not great in their own ways. Alive is a bad, shallow movie with one dimensional characters and a Hollywood script. Not one of the main actors are Latin American, there is one Puerto Rican and Italian guy lol, and there is not one line of Spanish in the movie. It’s simply untrue and unrealistic to the story. Society of the snow on the other hand is Spanish speaking, played by all Uruguayan and Argentinians. It is the first true picture to come out about the tragedy. It has great CGI and effects. The families of the deceased and the victims, let alone the victims themselves has said that this is the best and most realistic and respectful version. The people aren’t made simply made characters and not people in it either, and the gruesomeness they had to endure are not dramatized or not factual as they were in Alive. Society of the snow showed deep, meaningful, powerful and real representation and retelling. Alive didn’t. That’s just what it is.

@@urangmyphone265 You obviously didn't watch Alive, or you'd know half the cast was actually Latin American. Especially the guy who played Carlitos must be of Latin heritage, although born in Canada who was a very big main character. Society was not even the first true film to come out from South America in Spanish about this story. I think it's perfectly fine to like both. Both made an impact on me. Alive ended with giving you an inspiring feeling of hope while society made me cry real emotional tears. Also, by watching both, which I did and you did not, you see how both the same things happened actually Alive gave more time to Liliana which I really liked but Society showed more of the rescue and afterwards which was great to see portrayed. They were both factually represented and had the same beats. With all the things you've gotten wrong about this, you are just being stupid offended just because and stubborn.

@@whoknowswho7494 Exactly. Keep in mind that in Uruguay there is no snow, nor much cold. They were twenty-somethings who wore clothes at most to go out for a drink in Santiago, not for snow. Beyond that, I think that of all the variables (desolation, hunger, uncertainty, thinking that they were in one place when it was another, etc.) the shelter issue was something that they resolved well, without problems, isolating the fuselage, etc. But after they found the tail of the plane with many jackets, they made the sleeping bag with the stuffing of the seats, insulated shoes with nylon bags, etc. and that allowed him to walk the 64 km in 10 days crossing the mountain range through the snow to reach civilization. It's really amazing. Best regards

It's not a remake, it's based on the book 'Society of the Snow' written 36 years after the event, by Pablo Vierci, who also lost close friends and acquaintances in the tragedy. Besides, the film 'Alive' is not true to the book of the same name at all. And the only thing the survivors like about the 1993 movie is the special/visual effects, such as the plane crash. They've always said 'Alive', the film, is not the real story.
