Social Media Data: Study Hall Data Literacy #9: ASU + Crash Course

It seems like everyone uses social media all the time, but is that true? And how much data is collected when we do use social media? And is that data used in good faith? In this episode of Study Hall: Data Literacy, Jessica talks to us about how data works in Social Media.

Great video. Funny how the algorithm could be gamed once entities understood how it worked. Misinformation and conspiracy theories have a lot of engagement which has a lot of weight in their algorithm. The social implications of this all looks to be fairly toxic at the moment. Social media companies are not concerned with the betterment of society. All corporations are legally bound to make as much money as possible so people should always keep that in mind each time they install a “free” app. I am glad the algorithm took me to this video, though. Keep up the good content.

Interesting, though it would have been useful to mention jow/where to see, look for or access this data. I loathe the idea of a bubble since I joined Facebook to see and learn about places, people and viewpoints far removed from mine (some of my most interesting online discussions have been with just such people, though it's a fuzzy meandering line between that and online "caps lock" ranting and more). Looking at demographic "bubbles" could be a great way to coax those algorithms outside of the current bubbles ... I think?

I hate knowing how much these algorithms and thus corporations know about me. Wish I could erase my online existence!

You may be interested in a book called "The Power of Habit", it reveals more along such lines, leaving the reader (or listener, if sn audio book) better informed to avoid it.

Depends on whether there are noticeable themes, tendencies, commonality or links between them, I imagine. I know if someone went through my music library, though, they'd probably conclude I have multiple personalities lol
