By definition, mimetic desire means that we're adopting another person's desire as our own, usually without even realizing that we're doing it. Social media has given us millions of mimetic models that we now have to contend with. Some people have gone from having 10 mimetic models to now having thousands, and we haven't quite come to grips as a culture with what that means for our mental and emotional health.
All desire comes from us feeling like we lack something, which can bring us into a dangerous, vicious habit because there will always be another model to find. We have to choose our models wisely whether they are famous influencers across the globe or our closest friends. We also have to know when the model is inflaming us with the desire for something that's going to bring real fulfillment or whether it's going to bring a dopamine hit or allow us to fantasize about a life that we'll probably never have.
All desires are modeled for us 24 hours a day, billions of them, and we need to understand the mimetic landscape of social media, or else we'll become completely controlled by it.

I agree with the comments below that quitting social media is one of the best decisions you could make but you should really get mature and conscious enough to realize what harm it does to you (destroyed self-esteem, high dopamine threshold, wasted time etc.) People are dependent on external validation and rely their whole worth on the opinion of other people. Hence we ended up in a society where the number of likes, followers and positive comments defines your position in the social pyramid. It's a broken bottom. If you consider quitting social media but are afraid of the feeling of abandonment, this is something that most probably will never happen. Instead, you will have time to focus on your self-improvement, increase your attention span, be able to delay gratification, reveal some hidden potential etc. For example, sometime after quitting social media, I noticed, that reading a long book is not a problem to me anymore, I found writing extremely absorbing (and have a motivation to improve that skill!) and started to play chess, which I also find fascinating. My life has changed tremendously and I wish you the same, guys.

The reading thing has got to do with attention spans. Watching short videos, gifs etc(which is basically all social media) reduces your attention span. You lose concentration or the ability to focus for long periods. Thus most people avoid reading nowadays bcoz they can't (they will get bored easily)

I got rid of social media because I was constantly comparing myself to others… and it was making me miserable. During therapy, I realized that there were and are many barriers in my life that prevented me from doing a certain this or that. I’m so glad that random people I knew 20 years ago know nothing of my life, who my husband is, what I do for work. KZread is the only thing I have, I watch educational things, like this, how to communicate with people, study tips, etc but I’m anonymous here.

This makes me think about Plato's allegory of the cave; the shadows on the wall to the prisoners is what social media is to our perception in the 21st century. Shadow illusions of connectedness, success, friendship, adventure, etc which are actually curated, polished aspects of individuals addicted to seeking validation, attention. Reality means to dislodge ourselves from the cave. It's quite scary and extraordinary to see how social media became a source of escapism/entertainment to an actual extension of one's existence. Two years ago I quit reddit, ig, fb, and got into reading and journaling, I love having in person conversations, taking walks in nature, overall feeling alive, both intellectually and emotionally. Social media has made me egotistical, vain, and stupid, and I'm thankful to be moving forward with my life without the absurd desire to broadcast each step I take to a world of strangers.

I have not had social media since I was 19. I just knew it was damaging my mental health - but I will say, no one checks on me or cares about what I'm doing because I'm not on it. In fact, everyone thinks the reason I'm not on it is because I have nothing to share. Really it just hurts my soul. Even without social media though, I can't go anywhere without my phone. I constantly feel pulled to it. I am praying to meet someone where we can be more present together and get back to the essence of life. If I don't meet anyone who shares my mindset I will continue on the path. i deleted instagram and its amazing how you get withdrawals from the app. that tangible social validation that comes through a curated list of the best photos of my life and comments and likes is gone. and when im feeling insecure it makes me feel like i have fomo or that im a nobody. its so odd. i was born in 2000 so i grew up with all this crap. its really an addiction and i hope a revolutionary logging off happens.

Gen Z people just don’t care. I have gen z friends who follow 4-7k people from our town/country who they don’t know personally, who are fake influencers, aggressive youtubers, they enjoy rants, fights, OF models, gaming pages and gamers, weird memes etc. Sometimes when you talk to them - they seem mature. But they crash so frequently and have psychological and somatic problems so often, engage in problematic behaviors constantly and also spend A LOT. And guess what is their medicine, their favorite shop and their favorite therapist?

I totally agree about the models thing. I deleted my fb, ig and the like about 6 months ago bc I was becoming addicted to use them, I was really into see others' lifes, skills and appearance as well as I was doing things just to say so I decided to get out of that world and rn I think, it was the best decision I could ever made bc now I'm focused on my self-improvement and I'm working to get what I want the most. But don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean that I'm not curious or interested about other people's life anymore or that I don't want to show my succes-sometimes-, although I don't like to admit it I still care about all of that, so what I'm going through it's like a fight between my toxic desires and my rational mind.

Eventually, you will realize that the world without social media is like the one before the internet boom; More like an organic world, the process may seem frustrating but better that way than living a complete lie because of social media where most of your emotions if not all are greatly influenced by algorithms.

I noticed my depression and anxiety have improved DRAMATICALLY while being off of it too. I can think clearer, I have more time to do things, and I'm not constantly comparing myself to others. No more facebook depression either. Now all I have is KZread on my laptop computer, which I understand is also social media, but it's not like the other apps. I go on it once in a while but I am not consumed by it anymore like I was when I had all those apps on my smartphone. Best decision I ever made

I wonder what social media platforms will be like in 20-30 years and whether people in the future will think that social media of our time caused colossal damage to the human psyche. Personally I deleted mostly all social media, I only use Voicely and a couple of music streaming apps. It's so refreshing compared to scrolling endlessly on Tiktok and Instagram

I have been wondering about the nature of free will and if it truly exists and it got me thinking "why do we desire the things that we desire?" or "why do we hate the things that we hate?" This video helped me understand better how social media influences our desires and I wholeheartedly agree with you. A perfect example of this is before a particular singer became trending, most of my friends didn't listen to her songs and they didn't pay attention to her that much. That is until liking that particular singer became a 'trend' and now every single one of my friends 'love' her and they criticize me for not being a fan of her. Social media is truly toxic and you can get bullied for not liking what everybody else likes or for not hating what everybody else hates. We have to start interrogating ourselves more often to prevent the tremendous influence of social media.

The thing with these models is that we tend to use it as one to one references, it aspires us to want do the same, be the same, or want to compete with it. (And in the opposite situation we tend to cancel it). We became copiers, replicators with our models of desire. But what we should try to do is use social media more as just a source of reference to Inspire us, be more conscious about what it is that inspirers us instead of just wanting to replicate it.

Big think is also a model. Trying/Wanting to be a part of this group of "thinkers" is also a model. Wanting to be able think like these "thinkers" or "understand" and agree with what they're saying or thinking that we're different/that we question/that we aren't like a part of the "crowd" or that we aren't "sheep" ..all of this is the same. Whether you are following trends or consciously not following trends because you're "different"...even there we all are, seeking a tag/an identity .. true individuality comes from escaping group think, but at the same time, allowing yourself to like something/want something, even if "the crowd" wants it - not because they have it or are seeking it...but because you still genuinely want that for yourself.

Social media is a virtual world that lets you connect with other people easily. If you are too immersed in it, you will lose your real world, because all your attention and focus will be in the virtual world. We should know which is the most important so we can use social media responsibly. I know my family and my friends are more important than social media. Rather than clicking "Like" for them, you should just contact them.

Although the volume of content is exponentially larger than it was before smart phones, didn't TV have this same effect on us? For instance, I remember feeling extremely poor because even the "poor" people on TV were considerably better off financially than I was. When I asked my parents how poor we actually were, they were baffled by my question. The loudly insisted that we aren't "poor," we're middle class. Turns out, my parents actually made pretty good incomes. They were just horrible with money. Also, drugs, alcohol, shopping addictions, and impulsive behaviors caused them to live as if we were poor. Not that I understood any of that as a kid. All I knew is that I needed a job starting at age 11 if I wanted clothes that fit and school supplies. No wonder why I feel ready for retirement, I've been working for 40 years already and I'm only in my early 50's!

Music is just a hobby and success comes naturally. If you force it you ruin the fun. Kind of like competitive gaming. Since everyone's sharing their experience of quitting social media, & a cent from me could add up to someones inspiration, here goes my experience. My social anxiety is so low. It's crazy. I sleep better. My attention span is building up (not declining). I feel genuinely happy sonetimes. I'm aware of my surroundings. Procrastination who!? It's been a month only. Hoping for better ahead. I even want to go on a full social media detox one day a week, no phone involved in the day. At first, when you quit social media, you feel the high. Then you go greyscale. It's hard. But, that's where you can't give up. If you're in a negative environment, you'll start to feel that negativity clench onto you so strongly, which you distracted yourself from before. But, don't be afraid! That's the universe talking to you. It's cuing you to get out of there. You pick up so much after that one life changing decision. It's better than being stuck. Feel everything & just accept it. Let it come & go. These are just feeling of being just, human. Much love, stay strong

Also, a tip for a US someone: marry a "model" who is actually healthy, a US citizen, a prophetess, a scientist, who at least went to college and has a Bachelor's Degree or even a Master's Degree because beauty and brains is a great combination and you will never regret that decision.

It’s not social media’s fault that people’s lives are screwed up nowadays! Just like with alcoholic beverages, we have to be responsible for the amount of time we spend with technology (probably mainly time online)! If you’re addicted to technology as opposed to fiddling with it in moderation, you have a brain health problem. For now, I suggest a membership with HAPPYneuron or Lumosity. If I can think of more ideas, I will share them here and wherever else applicable!

Social media placates our need for social contact. Before it existed, people became so board and lonely 5hat they went to the park, shopping centre or library just to be near other people. Incrementally we started conversations and made real friends.

I don't use social media since half a decade, still I am miserable, it's all about who you are, your circumstances and your way of doing things. For some people social media is just a normal things, for others who think a lot about what others things are the sufferers not just coz of social media but in real life too, it just aggravates what was already wrong with them.

You shouldn't be envious of others. No matter who they are. It's the story of Cain and Abel. Oldest story in the book. As J. Peterson says: Make yourself better then you were yesterday. Period. Don't compare yourself to others.

Exactly! People don’t like to take responsibility for their own issues and rather play the blaming game.
