Social justice -- is it still relevant in the 21st century? | Charles L. Robbins | TEDxSBU

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Pervasive injustice has society at a turning point. Every individual has a choice to make - you can either stand with me and fight for social justice, or you can stay on the sidelines silently supporting the systems that perpetuate the inequality, violence, and poverty that plague our world. This talk highlights some of the most critical social justice issues of our time and calls on everyone to stand up and play a part in changing the world.
Charles L. Robbins is the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the Undergraduate Colleges at Stony Brook University. His faculty appointment is in the School of Social Welfare where he was most recently Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. He is an affiliated faculty member in the Program in Public Health. Dr. Robbins is the co-founder and co-director of the Stony Brook University Freedom School, operated in conjunction with The Children’s Defense Fund. He is on the Board of Directors of MCW, Global where he is responsible for global youth development and represents MCW as a NGO Delegate to the United Nations. Dr. Robbins supports the work of the Long Island GLBT Services Network, Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, The Children’s Defense Fund and Young Men 4 Gender Equality. Dr. Robbins is passionate about his research and work that focuses on issues of social justice, higher education and student success, gender equality, men and masculinity and violence as a public health issue. Dr. Robbins understands the importance of being a mentor to students and colleagues. He has been married for forty years and is a proud father and grandfather. Dr. Robbins is thrilled to be a part of TEDxSBU.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

People need to start properly learning and getting informed about these various issues if there is going to be change. People can't discuss and debate topics they have no understanding or knowledge of. The bigger problem is that this country has a way of making its people feel like they know more than they actually do. When it comes to discussions between people, a majority either use or fall prey to the many kinds of persuasive fallacies like flawed arguments, flawed design of argument, or flawed evidence in arguments.

Wow, this video is 8 years old and yet nothing has changed. In fact I feel like modern feminism got worse somehow. A lot of children are still dying to gun violence, and a lot of men and women are stuck in abusive relationship. What hurts the most is that nothing mentioned in this video has changed for the better, everyone just moves on once something big happens. I'm a student needing to look for a video to write a reflection and when I listened to this I just feel sadder. Man Humanity is just so screwed right now.

Edit: Before people try to point out the statistics are probably not accurate, that isn't what I should or anyone should focus on, it's the fact that they are still happening, it's the screwed-up truth that we all just seem to accept it at a day to day basis, or what about the fact that there are problems in modern times that can't seem to have a middle ground and the fact that people in power and society haven't done anything is what matters. Why do numbers matter when there are so many people dying, we already have COVID as a worldly problem for gosh damn sake.

  • @pricture

_"Cosmic justice is not simply a higher degree of traditional justice, it is a fundamentally different concept. Traditionally, justice or injustice is characteristic of a _*_process._*_ A defendant in a criminal case would be said to have received justice if the trial were conducted as it should be, under fair rules and with the judge and jury being impartial. After such a trial, it could be said that "justice was done"-regardless of whether the outcome was an acquittal or an execution. Conversely, if the trial were conducted in violation of the rules and with a judge or jury showing prejudice against the defendant, this would be considered an unfair or unjust trial-even if the prosecutor failed in the end to get enough jurors to vote to convict an innocent person. In short, traditional justice is about impartial processes rather than either results or prospects._ _Similar conceptions of justice or fairness extend beyond the legal system. A "fair fight" is one in which both combatants observe the rules, regardless of whether that leads to a draw or to a one-sided beating. Applying the same rules of baseball to all meant that Mark McGwire hit seventy home runs while some other players hit less than ten. The "career open to talents" or "a level playing field" usually means that everyone plays by the same rules and is judged by the same standards. Again, if the process itself meets that standard, then no matter what the outcome, "you had your chance." But this is not what is meant by those people who speak of "social justice." In fact, rules and standards equally applicable to all are often deliberately set aside in pursuit of "social justice." Nor are such exceptions aberrations. The two concepts are mutually incompatible._ _What "social justice" seeks to do is to eliminate undeserved disadvantages for selected groups. ... This is often done in disregard of the costs of this to other individuals or groups-or even to the requirements of society as a whole. When one considers a society such as Sri Lanka, where group preferences initiated in the 1950s led to decades of internal strife, escalating into bitter civil war with many atrocities, it is not purely fanciful to consider that other societies may become more polarized and contentious-to everyone’s ultimate detriment-by similar schemes of preferential treatment for one segment of society."_ - The Quest For Cosmic Justice by Thomas Sowell

***** Hey I don't support violence or poverty. But Inequality in inevitable, and the only way to prevent it is if we humans were all the same. Because You is not I and therefor not equal inequality is a truth that must be realized. In order to get around this, one is to say "Hey, I don't care who you are." There for one must treat the guy the same as the next guy or else one does care who the guy is. If you fight against inequality you should advocate Idon'tcarism, not the unequal treatment of unequal people to achieve "equality". I don't support violence because hey, who doesn't like foreign girls (or boys if your into that). Poverty is a horrible state to be in. We should do as much as we can to help them, but we shouldn't force people to help them. You should work at the soup kitchen once in a while, buy them a sandwich, teach them vocational skills, you know charity work that you left-wingers are so passionate about and so glad that the right-wingers do most of it. And about the part were he talks about the box of masculinity: If I want to stay in my box of masculinity please let me. If you want to leave to box sure i don't care, but don't take me with you.

actually the Equal Pay Act of 1963 GUARANTEES there's no wage gap. there is an EARNINGS gap but it's not the same thing. The wage gap insists that women get paid less for the same work. the earnings gap clarifies that women (on average) make different life choices than men do. Men tend to put much more effort into their careers, work more dangerous jobs, take more risks with their jobs and are more likely to ask for raises and promotions. The data that the wage gap myth shows is very misleading and unfortunately a lot of people tend to misinterpret it

Yeah, accidental killing is called accidental killing or involuntary manslaughter. Murder by definition means the killing is pre-planed and carried out.

There is something very wrong here. You can propose a lot of definitions of social justice, but so much of them are very bad. The man here give a good example of a bad definition, I think that is his problem. With a good definition you can do a lot of things in this field: please follow authors like Rawls, Dworkin, Agnes Heller, Bruce Ackerman and Brian Barry.

Social Justice will never exist because we have more people working against it then for it. Hatred is the main reason why life for all will not be equal. We rather keep each other down than help one another.

You're damn right I work against it. There is absolutely nothing "just" about social justice, but it doesn't shock me in the slightest that you're supportive of it: you'll stand to gain from it at the expense of people who did absolutely nothing to you, so why wouldn't you? I believe that deep down you know it's wrong and dehumanizing to the very people it claims to be "helping", but you will actually face the most severe consequences for speaking out against it, so you don't and again that doesn't shock me. If anything, that realisation alone makes me all the more resolved to give everything I have in the fight against social justice. I say this with complete honesty, too.
