What was Sobek the god of? Why was he so important to Ancient Egyptians?
All of your questions about the God of The Nile will be answered.
We start with Sobek's back story by traveling to The ancient city of Crocodilopolis in the Faiyum. In order to understand Sobek, Krokodilópolis reveals the true reason why Egyptians worshipped crocodiles.
You'll meet Crocodilopolis' giant holy crocodile - The Son of Soukhos (aka Petsoukhos/Suchus/Soûkhos/Petsuchos) and see how he became the most important animal in the city.
Krokodilópolis was renowned for its gigantic crocodile themed monuments. The people of Shedet frequently brought offerings and regularly worshipped at Sobek's temples.
After a guided tour of the crocodile city, you'll watch an animated story from the Coffin texts featuring Ra, Horus, Isis, and Sobek. This is a real story from the ancient texts and it shows the journey of Sobek overcoming Chaos.
Finally, you'll see why crocodiles in Ancient Egypt caused a lot of controversies.
Sobek may not be one of the most well known Ancient Egyptian Gods, but he's definitely one of the most interesting.
In summary, this Documentary about is about Sobek, showing you his fascinating connection with the Ancient Egyptian people.

All jokes aside though, it’s really interesting how much fertility is a strong recurring theme in ancient Egyptian mythology. Probably had to do with Egypt itself being an incredibly fertile land. A literal oasis in the middle of a scorching hot desert.

Sobek is one of my favorite legends, because he's literally like Godzilla triumphant, confident, strong and his own diety who bows to no man. But hes also very much a lover and protects all those he loves or See's a comrade in and is well respected, what I love the most about Egyptian mythology is that they tell the stories of their dieties in detail, showing us more than one side of them, like isis, being the mother to all and Egypt's goddess of motherhood, but isis was a woman of great strength and wrath as well.

His cult center was at Shedet. After the demise of the Old Kingdom, Sobek appeared as a prominent local god at Sumenu, a locality in the Theban province. His cult there was present since the Heracleopolitan period when dynasties nine and 10 ruled Egypt from the Delta. This period came to an end when the Theban kings of dynasty 11 took control of Upper and Lower Egypt, beginning what is known as the Middle Kingdom. The cult of Sobek at Sumenu became the second most important after that of Shedet, especially during the reign of Amenemhat II.

No, the worship of the crocodile God Sobek is not a cult. It's not a demon worship.
They did genetics on some of the mummified remains of the crocodiles from Crocodopolis & found that those kept in the temples were a different species from the Nile Crocodile. They were smaller & less aggressive. The species still survived but in a completely different region of Africa. The theory was that once the areas were connected by tributaries & waterways, long dried up & gone. That species was chosen because it was generally easier to keep & raise. There were crocodile farms that were solely for breeding/raising animals to use as votive offerings ( probably to Sobek) Similar cat farms have been excavated. It seems to me that most of the Egyptian deities were represented by dangerous animals or apex predators. The cobra, the lion, the jackal, the vulture, the falcon, the hippo, the crocodile, etc. Sun gods/sky gods were pretty common among ancient people as were animal gods/spirits. I'd never heard this myth before, it was quite enlightening( I knew Sorbek had given the invention of fishing nets but didn't know the story) Really enjoying your channel💜

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you so much for creating a video on Sobek!!! He is one of my passionate favorites. I truly adore and love him so much my heart over fills. In fact I had a very close encounter with a crocodile when I was a small child of 6. I was in a canoe braced ontop of equipment and a crocodile dragged off the bank and slowly swam right under me. I was so at peace when it happened. I felt nothing but unconditional love and fascination. My parents were solid in fear and surprised the crocodile didn’t bump the canoe and knock me over board. To this day I have this passionate and profound love of crocodiles. Sobek has so little information and hardly any mythology. Thank you for sharing one of his stories !!!

Oh wow! Now I have clarity! In the family game of Wizard101 there is an entire world devoted to the crocodile city, which looks similar to yours shown in the video, and there are various Sobeks to fight; The human body/croc head look adorn with gold but different versions and sizes of Sobeks which might be the ones mentioned as, the "Happy Sobek" and "Beauty of Sobek"
While I enjoyed your humorous opening, I inclined to accept that Sobek(sbk) probably comes from 'to unite' rather than 'to impregnate'. and it makes actually sense since he helped Horus and Isis to recollect pieces of Osiris and hands of Horus.
