So you want to read Kant

In this video we go over an often-asked question. You want to read Kant, but you don't know where to start. We offer a some guidelines. We don't think it's wise to jump into the Critique of Pure Reason without either a broad background in philosophy in general, and without some knowledge of Kant in particular. Which is why we recommend Kant's introductory work to his metaphysics: the Prolegomena. If you can master the Critique of Pure Reason: congratulations! Then the Critique of Practical Reason as well as the Critique of Judgment shouldn't be any problem.

For Kant's ethics, better to start with his book "Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals"

I would add reading Reinhold’s Letters on Kantian Philosophy as this was the gateway to the Critique through which most of those who were influenced by Kant first understood him. Reinhold simplified the concepts and even Kant conceded that Reinhold perfectly understood him. Probably more accessible than Prolegomena

You can also read a work of Deleuze that kinda of does the job for you. It explains the main points of Kant's thought in the limit of 100 pages. It's purely didactic, so it presents itself as a guide to Kant, not as commentary or something.

An aspect that I like to point out is the fact that it took Kant a full decade to write down the Critique of pure reason. And still he felt the need to substantialy rewrite various sections for the second edition. When you pick up a work like this, you should be aware that it will be a demanding effort - you might compare it to the amateur runner who has set the goal to run a marathon. It will require some dedication, some renouncing and the motivation to keep it up with it when you start doubting the use of what you're doing. Another advice I'd give is to pay some attention to the structure of the work, its architecture so to speak - or as the French put it: l'économie du livre. While that is probably useful for almost every work of philosophy, I think it's a especialy true for subtantial and complex works as the Critique. Understanding what elements Kant covers and how they relate to each other in his argumentation will help you keep on track during the sustained effort.
