I happened to grow up in a town on the East Coast which had a waiver from the state allowing people as young as 16 to certify as an EMT and work on the ambulance (but no driver could be under 18). And that's the path that I ended up taking. In retrospect, it was not a healthy decision, haha.

They are a BLS-only ambulance service, that is supported by both Fire and (what use to be Rural Metro), I believe it’s now AMR. Basically they act as first responders, and once the actual ambulance with ALS ability arrives, that unit, be it Fire or Rural/Metro, AMR, etc take over care and transportation. Unless it’s an actual BLS call, then it will be turned over to the Uni.

You can become an ECA (Emergency Care Assistant) or ECSW (Emergency Care Support Worker) through applying to a local ambulance trust. Becoming an EMT or Associate Practitioner requires you to complete quite a few courses as you can give drugs and conduct more skills. If you want to become an EMT best thing to do is work your way up from an ECA through the trust you work for, or if you have precious healthcare experience apply for an EMT role straight out. Also the Paramedic role is only achieved through University now, so 3 years full time and you’ll get the BSc Hons in that :).

I'm a NYS EMT living on Long Island in Suffolk County and this is very much of "you wanna be an EMT" because it's not like you see on TV. A lot of the time is spent sitting around waiting for a call. What Ryan is doing is he's showing that if you wanna be an EMT this is what it's like a lot of the time. I know that during the overnight shift call volume isn't as high as it is during the day. I volunteered and worked over night's for 26 years and there would be maybe 2 calls usually between 2am - 3am, but I was always able to get sleep until about 5a or 5:30a. Ryan has also worked hard for his promotion and instead of criticizing his work You should strap up and become an EMT.
