I'm 18 and spent my 2 free college years learning Accounting level 2 and 3 and passed. But now I don't fancy it but at least it wasn't wasted as i'd love to run my own business and plumbing looks great for me as the pay sounds good and I could run a plumbing business. I am not looking to be like most plumbers i hear where they screw about and don't care about the clients. I like the way you work where if you do something you do it right and not half do it for a sink to break in month. My mate is on his 3rd year as an apprentice and he has great morals like you and his boss keeps upping his pay as he's a great lad. I am soo keen to learn new stuff and I really think I could go far with plumbing. I just want to say thanks for all the great videos and it may be life changing for me :)

Real life honest experience! Totally appreciate pb! Where your coming from has been drilled into me when I begin my apprenticeship I always treat all my jobs like the way I would want done in my house. I'm going out on my own 3 weeks and I'm nervous and there's never a right time to start out. I've got a banner of a ford transit for free to start out. I've got my gas ticket and oftec ticket and svq3 just qualified but I am a 34 year old. I'm only on just above the minimum wage for the company I'm working for ATM. As long as I make more than what I'm on. I've got similar tools as you and I've got another mates who are experienced plumbers who will give me a hand if I struggle. I did most of my time with a 1 man band similar to yourself. So I learned a lot.

I'm 26, been a fully qualified plumber since aged 20, started my apprenticeship aged 16, and only recently in past year I've been dissatisfied with the company I'm working for, my hours are 8-4 but I'm getting bombarded with jobs outside my working hours like fitting close couple suites, showers, baths, etc late on in the day at like 3.30pm and I'm not getting paid any overtime for getting home at 6-7pm!!! The thought of being ur own boss and working for urself is so tempting, one day I would like to make the leap. It's just the thought of going on your own and 4 month later it goes tits up, your behind on ur mortgage payments, etc

The more Training courses the better , and listen to what and how other engineers say and tricks to get round problems . Have been in this industry for most off my life , selling plumbing and heating products for different merchants , Then went self employed 18 years ago . Loving ever minute of it . So all the people just joining this industry , yes its hard but fulfilling . THIS IS A GREAT INDUSTRY .

(Worth more to him)I avoid heating as my boss for 10 years stopped doing gas as had so much work just jobbing. I’m now fitting bathrooms with zero qualifications but so much on the job knowledge so nothing I can’t come across I haven’t seen. Great video mate. Know your worth and people out there who are stuck in a rut while going collage just stick with it and with experience the confidence will come and the Money will be there at the end

Brilliant video PB. I came Into the industry from a non traditional angle at 40. I've always been practically minded and had always wanted to be a plumber. So from a boring office job and set out on my own. I love being a plumber it's the best job I've ever had. I don't think self employment is for everyone. I think you need to be motivated and well organised. It can be a well rewarding industry and there are parts of it that piss you off, namely customers that won't pay! But as you say they are rare and most customers appreciate you. I do worry for the next generation of plumbers and how they can get a start. I've looked into this and think the government need to do a lot more with regard to apprenticeships. Keep up the good work 👍

I would love to get out of the office job (electrical engineer). Been thinking about taking the plunge. Update on this if anyone cares. I've taken a few more steps, nothing has changed with regards to getting into a job site with anyone as no one wants a now 36 yo as an apprentice. I've enrolled on a plumbing and renewable energy course. I have read up on these "colleges" and I know they have a bad rap. Watch this space, we will see how it goes. The plans is, qualified wet plumber in around a year, part p electric in another year then gas after that. The course offers on site training for the nvqs. Hope this goes well and opens a new career path, office work is getting BORING!

You're lucky to come from a family of plumbers, all that knowledge. I done my apprenticeship through a housing association 12 years ago, it's a good job and I do enjoy it but I feel I'm missing out on a lot of experience as all our housing stock has the same gear in it and the job isn't that varied. I could go self employed to work on different systems and appliances but it's a comfortable job, regular wage, holiday and sick pay, half decent pension, bit of a catch 22.

Top video with a broad range of views. Some of the people commenting seem to be stating a lack of apprenticeships. For under 18s its paid for by the government and training providers where I live cant get enough through the door quick enough to get the payments! The sticking point I think is the workplace trainers to take youngsters on. One of the guys interviewed made a good point with regards to contacting merchants. That's the link that needs to be made- training centres/colleges with merchants who supply all the trades. I'm in the process of leaving the military and am changing career into this trade. Company incorporated, coming to the end of C&G/NVQ L2 year1, Water Regs done, Unvented next month and getting some site time a few days a month with a guy I used to serve with who's been out on his own for 4 years and doing great. Getting the workplace assessor was the hardest bit for me. Spent a f***ing fortune on tools so I'd say for those who are younger and going into this- start building your tool inventory slowly. Instead of 10 pints on Saturday night, have 5 and get a new pipe slice!

I’ve only had one customer now not pay for a bathroom refit and had to go courts it’s a real bummer when you’ve worked so hard and end up losing out big time, but they are things to be safe after that experience I always do a contact if the jobs go over let’s say 250 just to be safe, yours and the customers sign it helps ten fold if ever goes to court that and get the customer to pay for materials for example of its over 150 that’s what I do can do a deposit on labour to of you think it’s required. I’m also very lucky! To have been my dads apprentice so was always pushed to get involved instead of watching but was also very strict! So no mistakes! That and always stick to your pricing it’s rare that a job is straight forward and most end up needing more parts or your time than originally priced for so stick to your prices or can end up losing money that’s my advice :)

ive just ventured into the renewables industry, installing ASHP systems, biomass etc. left being self employed and subcontracting. nervous as its completely different to the systems im used to working on. im not affraid to say im nervous and that i have a lot of learning for that side of plumbing and ive been in the industry 9 years, i think to many apprentices are expected to know more than what they have actually learnt, which then makes the apprentice feel disheartened and feel a bit shit about his/her self. unfortunately some companies who take on apprentices do pile them of on their full timers and then end up just being a labourer for the day and dont learn anything.

I’ve just started my plumbing job 8 years after going to college to say it’s difficult to get a plumbing job is a understatement. Unless your family it’s almost impossible. I need to do my nvq to progress onto any further courses so that’s my next thing I need to do. But only a month in I need more experience to do the nvq. I’d like to eventually have my gas safe or oil tickets. So long way to go yet. I’m 30 so time isn’t something I’ve got loads of. Easily another 2-3 years of courses to do with a family aswell isn’t easy but hopefully be worth it

I've just started my plumbing course with new trades college. I'm a chef by trade, have been for about 14 years but with how the hospitality industry is I'm looking to start something new. If there's any plumbers around Buckingham/Milton Keynes that would be able to give me some experience 1 or 2 days a week..I'm happy to not even be paid just to get experience that would be amazing!

I put a quote in once for a full bathroom suit the client said she needed to get more quotes, anyway, a few weeks passed the same person was on the phone to me, can I come and repair a leak on her bath, that a friend of a friend had done for well under half my quote. As you say always try to learn I'm a plumber of 42 years and still learning

It is such a shame that the world nowadays has changed towards a gig mentality i.e. apprenticeships with big employers are so hard to find cos its mostly small sole trading firms that invariably have family or friends that get the leg up. Ho Hum, when I dropped out of academia (didn't go to uni) I was seen as a manual worker and peeps looked down their nose at apprenticeships. Apprenticeships, when the country was more industrialised, were ten a penny; its almost reversed e.g. a Tradesman of any ilk is possibly a better career move than university degree which are not linked to any particular skill. The plumbing trade itself has to stop the public tail wagging the dog and racing to the bottom by uniting as a single body to try and implement some of the great stuff you talk about PB....

Where I live in the home counties (Buckinghamshire), plumbers earning over £100,000 is common place however property prices down here are extortionate and £100,000 doesnt give you many options for a decent house if you live by your self. You need a partner/spouse earning that much aswell to buy a decent house here

David Smith if you can’t get a job with a firm to do your gas training then these courses can be your only option In my experience you will gain the qualification but not the experience or confidence to safely work on gas straight away, it will be a learning curve just take your time and be careful, and if you don’t know, ask, there’s no shame in admitting you don’t know something None of us know it all ✌🏽

David Smith Yes you can sit Water Regs and Unvented seperately but to be a qualified 'Plumber' there's no getting around needing an NVQ Level 2. Just to make it more diificult, L2 is going and combining with L3 so that will be the industry's minimum standard.

I got an apprentiship in plumbing 30+ years ago my dream job with my Girfriends dad. That was until I discovered she was playing around behind my back and we split before I started the apprentiship and I didnt get to start it. My nephew is a plumber and to be honest i'm a little jelous of him the old thing of that should have been me now I have to call him to do jobs. for instance got a boiler change needed but it also requires new rads and pipe upgrade and it already up to around £3600 Oh well.

Just to throw in my two penneth.as we say down south, The biggest prob I have come across, as a retired 70-year-old plumber, is trying to find young lads who will firstly put that bloody iPhone in a box and leaving it at home, Secondly turn up on time with some enthusiasm for actual work,Finding lads who actually want to work ,it just so difficult,in my opinion,The other thing for me that time not keen about the trade today is all this plastic push fit, hot and cold water pipework, but that's simply because of my age and the era i started in , IE wiping joints, and filling soil stack collars with yarn and hot lead, then caulking it up to seal.apart from that the more technical side of plumbing, and heating that you show in your video,s is brilliant ,and any lad working alongside you should be chuffed to bits ,thanks again,

How do you work the cost out for a job ? do you charge to go out to a job ? and do you go out to a job and give a quote? & leave the quote or written estimate with the client ? as sometimes it can be used to get a cheaper price from the next plumber that comes along? Also. What is the best structure for charging and pricing ect ,? ie time it takes to do a job or one off price ? Do you charge for emergency from when you leave your home until the jobs completed ? Or. just give a price when you get there? And what happens if you cannot get that emergency fixed within that hour? Do you charge for that hour then come back to fix the job at a later date ? Thanks for Your advice and good luck☘️

Anthony scott loads of questions there Anthony I’ll try and answer a few If I go to quote for a job, it’s free If I get called to a fault, diagnose the fault and quote for the repair I charge for time spent diagnosing the fault (usually 1 hour) First hour includes travel to the property I always try and keep my customer up to date with any time scales or additional charges so it’s agreed before I carry out any work Hope that helps

P B Plumber Thanks very much for taking the time to get in touch that's fantastic. it's great to know , The main reason is if you cannot fix a problem within a hour Say for example it's water getting down the side of the bath due to a bad seal and you find damp plaster and tile's ect are starting to lift, Obviously you would have to arrange to come back to do that job which could take a few hours or a full day , and providing they are happy with the price to do the job in the first place ,. So you charge for the time spent diagnosing the problem say one hour, even though you didn't fix the problem what ever it is a boiler or or a leak ect , Great stuff Thanks for a great channel you Have inspired me so much after a accident and trying to getting back to 100% Really appreciate it 👍

Hi pb thank for your informative vids. What is your opinion / experience of a very quick plumbing course from organisations such as "able skills" which aim to get you to level 2 in about 10 weeks intensive training. Think the cost is about £3K

  • @PBPlumber

Steven Moody hi Steven, if you can get an apprenticeship that is the best route. If you really can’t then these courses won’t give you the experience you need so you’ll have to gain experience as you work, just be patient because it’s a steep learning curve, I’ve been plumbing for 18 years and still don’t know it all so 10 weeks is not nearly enough IMO

How did you get on with your dad when working for him and how did it transition to be your company. Difficult situation I'm in, I've a lot more to offer (8years exp, apprentice trained, Gas qualified etc) and can bring in my own work but im still just a employee and kind of sitting on my hands. Keep thinking to set up on my own but seems a shame to throw away chance of being 5th generation plumber.
