So You Wanna Hear This Old Hiwatt With A Few Guitars & Pedals? - That Pedal Show
It’s one of the most revered guitar amps of all time. And now we have the right cab. Or do we?
Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! In this episode Dan and I revisit our beloved Hiwatt DR103 Custom 100 guitar amplifier head from 1973, because - gasp - we managed to find the ‘Gilmour spec’ 4x12 cab to go with it! Erm, except we didn’t, which is all revealed in the video.
Anyway, we were basically looking for any excuse to fire up the old beast and hammer through it with a bunch of guitars and pedals. So that’s what we’re doing.
Please enjoy the episode!
Pedals & stuff in this episode…
Signal order for the board:
Optimus Machine, HRM, OD9, D&M Drive, split…
Harmonious Monk, then Vent, both to Hiwatt only
Delay and reverb stereo to both amps
(All the drive pedals hit both amps)
TheGigRig G3 Atom takes care of all signal routing, splits wet/dry/parallel and stereo
Optimus Machine and HRM are outside of G3, before loop 1. TS808 is loop 1, D&M Drive is loop 2, Monk in 3, Vent in 4, delay in 5, reverb in 6. Switch numbers are +1. Confusing huh?!

That Hiwatt was built by my great uncle. Lovely to hear it! I have a Harry Joyce 50 watt combo, serial number 001 that was a 16th birthday present. Still the best amp I own.

Never thought I was a fan of the Hiwatt but that sounds absolutely mega, gents! Thanks for everything you do, guys - the TPS community appreciates it!
I love when Dan finds his zen state while playing. We should all play with such emotion.
Have to say, I think both of you have progressed exponentially since lockdown started. The standard is bettering itself weekly! Cudos!👍👍
Absolutely epic tones, even with the wrong cab. The character of each guitar really seems to come through with the HiWatt. Cheers!
Dan - some of the most inspired and soulful playing I’ve heard from you. Whatever you’ve been doing, keep it up!
Love your regular informative videos, but there's nothing wrong with videos like this every once in a while, just some great tone and playing. Really enjoyed this!
Whenever you guys play a hiwatt I’m always struck that it sounds to me like sounds I’ve heard in famous albums. Maybe famous live albums too. Maybe it’s The Who, Pink Floyd, I’m not sure, but it really evokes classic rock that I’ve heard before. More than any Marshall’s or fenders and whatnot.

On the advice of a friend, my first gigging amp was a 70's Hiwatt 100 into a Marshall cab.Back then, there wasn't the info there is now , and I learned fast that it took stacking Rats and Muffs to get it to overdrive at any reasonable volume.Remains clear in my memory as so clean, and so mercilessly loud on 3, - just a good thing we practiced in abandoned warehouses. Another guitarist friend had a little Princeton , which I learned equally quickly, - was totally my bag.

What glorious sound on a Friday evening.
Absolutely brilliant. I've been in the presence of Gilmour's volume, it really is out of this world and shakes you to the core. At the same time it's so clean, not very distorted until he really wants it. I'd give anything to be there again.

VOLUME. Gain with clarity. I saw Floyd back in the late 80s. Every note DG played sang and bloomed out with, like the OP said, clarity and "clean distortion". Volume. There is no substitute. Quantitative change (increase in volume) leads to qualitative change (guitar becomes a different instrument). I think I've heard that said once or twice on this show, yeah? ;)
Great opening riffs. Looking forward to the video. Thanks 🙏
You two clearly have some real joy playing through the Hiwatt. My favorite tones I've seen on TPS and I'd imagine it's some of yours as well. Fun!

I've been making records for twenty odd years and Hiwatt days were always great guitar days in the studio. The 504s were always great, but punishing. 103s are awesome, but can't be in the same room with the matching cab. Diming the master always resulted in gorgeous tones that were face meltingly loud. Love the cleans these guys produce. Grindy stuff is unparalleled, but maybe too deafening.

Another wonderful episode. Despite the cab situation, there were still fantastic tones to be had there. It shows that quality amps, pedals, and of course players factor in so much to the overall tone. Hiwatts are underrated, especially for their clean tones, I think. And speaking of quality amps, on older designs there is the "swirl" sound that can happen. Apparently this is due mostly to bias shift. I would love for a video on that aspect of older amps, how pedals can enhance or mitigate the effect, as well as how or if it lends itself to inspiration. Thank you to everyone working at TPS for your endeavor to educate, investigate, and have fun with tones. It makes for a wonderful way to start Fridays.

No offense to anyone. I love the show and people make mistakes. That said, I am amazed how often I’m in a shop or inquiring about a cab, and the seller hasn’t opened it up to confirm what speakers are inside. It doesn’t take that long and if the cab is old, you really don’t know what you might find inside. In my experience, when I’ve asked to pop open a cab, it’s about a 50% chance that the speakers inside are not what the seller thought was in there!!!!
