I'm so happy I found this channel :) My Mal and I have hit a sort of plateau lately but I feel motivated again after this video. Thanks, you reassured me that my Mal is mostly just behaving like a normal Mal would 😅 This breed has a way of being SO impressive that I sometimes get perfectionistic and unrealistic with my expectations 🙄

Regarding being "more aggressive", I agree with Robert. The problem is with the handler, not the dog. I had been training an 18 month old GSD, since 12 weeks of age, for tracking, obedience and socialization. At 18 months we started protection work. The agitators absolutely could not get him to bite. We'd been going to this club for over a year and he knew all the members. After several sessions, they told me to give up on protection because I had "over socialized" him. I asked for 1 more session, but insisted they try to hit me with a stick. It never happened. My dog bit them every time with a firm mouth and we had to work long and hard on the release. He obtained a SCH I and II title within a year. All dogs bite. Aggression is the result of a poor temperament in the dog and unstable/inconsistent handler.

Exactly it's the dogs tactical intelligence, that must lead to engagement. Attack on command in moral reality is "awareness on command" the common person needs brains, not testosteranian balls.

I am a middle age man with my first dog, he is great. I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Everything I know about dogs. My dog is 5 months old and has a great temperament, he is very friendly. We have a great bond. He is fully house trained, does not chew things etc and will recall like he is on a rubber band, unless there is another dog. At 200 yards fine at 100 yards maybe he will return. Less than that he becomes totally deaf. I use a long line and he responds well, a little tug and he thinks ok and mostly will recall. I always love to see him play with other dogs, he loves it, and he is in dog heaven. I thought I was doing everything correct until a guy with a very well behaved dog said “he never let his dog play with other dogs”. At first my thought was, that sounds a bit harsh, but then I was reflecting and realise maybe I taking socialising too far. What is your view on letting dogs play with other dogs when your out?

Robert I just want to say thank you, you taught me how to teach my Whiskey, B. Malinois/Dutchy, how to fetch, sit, down, and here. He is an amazing guard dog, but is a big teddy bear to everybody that lives here. Being firm and fair has been one of the best pieces of advice for raising this breed. They do not respond well to being scolded or negative behaviors. He is the best dog I have ever had the privilege of owning, and you have helped me be a good/responsible owner to him. Some of the best advice I could give anybody that is thinking about getting a Malinois, is that if you have never owned a high energy/always ready to go dog, this breed is not for you. Get a Border Collie, they are amazing dogs, have a super high love for working, live to please, are super smart and have great energy.

One thought I have on the aggressive question, he may have a Malinois that just isn't into the biting sports as much as other Malinois or other dogs in general. If you watch schutzhund/ipo vidoes, they look PRETTY aggressive. Well, those particular aggressive looking dogs love doing it, so they are excited to get out there and they are locked in. It's also exciting to watch. Other dogs you can see have been trained VERY well, but it's just not the same effect. Just like if we have to do something we don't like but have to, we just go through the motions cause our heart isn't in it. The job is done, but not at the same level as someone who loves it. Not all beagles like to run rabbits, not all labs like to duck hunt, other dogs aren't calm enough to be therapy dogs. Just my 2 cents. Maybe heart would have been a better word than aggressive?

I have an almost 5 month old German Shorthaired Pointer and she pulls on the leash like crazy. We’ve tried using an easy walk harness and a gentle leader but she has quickly learned to pull with both. Is it too soon to start her on the prong collar? I am confident that I know how to use it correctly and we use it with our other GSP who is 2 years old and it works great with him.

it's quite simple you don't you train them individually then once you have them doing the same behavior on the same commands you attempt to have them do it together . idiot you can't focus on two things at once if you're letting one dog get away with things at a time then you're teaching both dogs to stay untrained because as soon as you stop noticing it can go back to doing whatever it wanted by the sounds of it never stop doing whatever it wanted

Hi Robert! I am a huge fan of your videos and I’ve learned so much. So thank you! I have a question. My 3 year old golden retriever was attacked by a pack of three huskies when he was about 6 months old, then again at a year old. These were the same 3 huskies at the same dog park. Then he was later attacked by an Akita. (We were minding our business playing fetch both times at a dog park, and we’ve stopped going to dog parks ever since the last time he was attacked.) We won’t ever be setting foot in a dog park again. We had no clue it was the wrong move! Anyway... Ever since the attacks, he has done great with all other breeds of dogs, however, becomes aggressive with huskies and akitas now as an adult. He was recently introduced to a very submissive 7 month old female husky, and he showed aggression again. How can we help him to break this behavior and distrust towards these breeds? Is it possible at this point? Or should we just avoid these breeds all together?

I have had a 1yo rescue Malinois/American Pitt Bull Terrier mix for about 2 months. At night before bed, we've been doing scent work around the house in order to tire her out a bit mentally. I'll put her in a sit/wait in another room while I hide the object and then tell her to "find it." We started using kibble and then when that got easy for her, I began using tea bags. She's really starting to catch on with the tea bags, so do you have any suggestions for ways to make the scent work more challenging for her?

With that final question, you say the daughter should not be playing tug with the malinois. Do you mean that she should never get to play in that type of way with the dog, or that the dog needs to be farther along in it's training before she does? I have a 14 week old Belgian Malinois/Blue Heeler mix, and I am hoping that she will be a good family dog once her training is more concrete. I am just trying to manage expectations.

I have a 6mo GSD, shes super sweet and loves all dogs and people. Her only issue is that she gets OVERLY OVERLY excited when she sees anotber dog, and than she loses her focus and tends to pull the leash. Shes well trained obedience wise, and listens anywhere else besides when another dog is close by, because she wants to play with them so badly. Any reccommendations Robert or fellow comment section peoples? Besides just her outgrowing some of the energy and reactiveness.

Hello Robert, thank you for the useful videos, have been watching them for 2 years now and really helped me along the way with my now 4 month old German Shepherd. I hope my question gets tackled in your next "ask me anything": my puppy tends to nip/lunch at my arms or hands whenever I correct her firmly. A firm correction is holding her cheek briefly and say "NO". Clearly, I only do this when she disobeys my previous and peaceful "NO". Now, I imagine her reaction is based on my firm correction, but I have caught her doing it right-away as well (when I ask her "politely"). Is this normal puppy behaviour and will she grow out of this kind of nipping? If not, how can I make her grow out of it? Thank you very much in advance.

I have a 9 month old Belgian malinios/ Springer spaniel mix and he has a really big problem with listening, as well as being destructive. I have watched quite a few of your videos and gave been searching for tips. I have taken him on walks, played with him using toys, I've rewarded him for good behaviour and have made it quite clear what is bad behavior. But the second I'm not around he tears things up even if he has toys. I've even gone the extent of taking out his bedding in his kennel because the second he gets the chance it's ripped to shreds. At this point I'm not sure what to do, I thought maybe it is his energy level but no matter what I do he always seems bored and getting into mischief.

I taught mine to carry things he has never had a lwash chewing issue but if you work with your girl on carrying a toy on walks. Instead of chewing on her leash it maybe a good bridge to at least keep her mouth and mind busy while she is young. And will also keep her from continuing the leash chewing behavior. Given time she may stop going for her leash and prefer to carry her toy.

She gave me lots of bites and scratches at first until I told her ouch each time she put her teeth on me and I hand fed her till she was 6 months old, every single meal. Her control is now excellent and she does not snap or bite, waits for her food and when she grabs my hand with her mouth, she does it gingerly to get my attention. Hand feeding also builds your bond.

There are groups that train service dogs for autistic people. Talk to them about what service dogs can do for people whose symptoms are similar to your son's and what types of dogs are best. If he doesn't need physical help, a smaller dog might be easier for him to keep with him wherever he goes.

Try maybe with a retriever (mostly golden and labs, the other ones have more drive) , which are generally great service dogs, or depending on the age of your son with even a smaller dog. Poodels are also used and come in various sizes and i also heard of papillons being used but mostly as alert and not comfort dogs. Many mutts are also great, but no matter the dog you will need help picking the right one. But as the previous person said, get in touch with different groups and trainers and do your research.

Good day. My 7 MO GSD/Rotweiler rescue has a distraction problem. I had originally asked how to fix my dogs problem. After some reflection I realized I need advice on a "me as a trainer" problem. My pup is very high energy and seems pretty intelligent. On walks she gets distracted and will ignore all my corrections/commands. I wonder if it's because I have failed to establish leadership, or if it's because my expectations of perfection from her are unreasonable at her age and she is ignoring me out of frustration with over-correction. The distraction is escalating into lunging/barking. Any input would be appreciated.

Jake Smith I have gone through this issue also. I did 3 things that have helped tremendously. First, I taught a look at me command. Stand in front of the dog with a treat in one or both hands, hands down at your sides. Wait while the dog whines and licks at your hands. Don't move our all for anything. Just wait. The instant your dog takes her eyes off your hands and looks at your face say 'ready!' and give a treat. (or look or focus or whatever you want to call this behavior) Repeat. Once she figures out the glance, hold her eyes for a bit longer before rewarding. After about a week, try saying 'Ready!' and see if she looks at you on command. Jackpot reward if she does; go back to the basic exercise if she doesn't. Once you can consistently all for her eyes, start adding duration, then distractions, then duration and distractions. This is also a great warm up at the beginning of any training session. Second exercise is the crazy walk. In a low-distraction area, hold the end of your 6-foot leash on your right hand right in front of your belt buckle. Treats in your left hand. Walk. The second the dog leaves the heel position, change direction away from the dog. Don't say anything, don't pull the dog into position, don't correct by jerking the leash, don't shorten the leash by grabbing with your left hand, just turn away and go. This exercise is best at a normal to brisk walking place. Eventually the dog will accidentally get into the heel position again. Mark with a 'Yes!' and reward immediately. Timing is critical here. You must be focused on the dog to get it right. Keep rewarding every few steps as long as the dog is in heel position. You can add some turns too. The second the dog loses position, change directions again. This exercise teaches the dog that it is her job to stay in position no matter what you do, which forces her to pay attention. Do not under any circumstances slow down and wait for the dog to catch up. If you find yourself trying to tighten up the leash, grab your belt with your right hand to stop yourself. Add distractions gradually. Decide at the beginning how precise you want her heel to be. If you want perfect position, only reward for perfect position, not for almost there. The third exercise was the hardest for my dog. Again, leash in right hand (normal heeling length), treats in left hand. While heeling, if the dog starts to pull ahead, stop and lock your right hand to your belt buckle. Don't move no matter how much the dog pulls and whines to get to the interesting smell. When the dog returns to heel, I toss out a good dog for returning. Then start walking forward again. The dog will instantly charge for the smell again. Stop and wait for the dog to fix herself. Walk on. It will probably take 5-15 minutes to get to the smell the first time. Once you arrive, release her to sniff a bit. (Free dog) She will soon learn that pulling never gets her to the smell. Only walking on a loose leash gets her there. You can train all 3 exercises together. You'll find that breakthroughs in one exercise will often lead to breakthroughs in the other exercises. Good luck.

Robert u really make me laugh Tell me.. when is it a good age to start protection sports . Will this sport knowledge be able to be channelled into.the real deal if it happened to arise.. Eg one is threatened with your life . obviously having a gun is the best way to defend yourself but all u have is your malinois- would the dog understand he still needs to go bite even if "person" in front has no bite sleeve/ bite suit on.. Sorry..if this falls under the category of stupid questions..lol.. but I'll take my chance..

Hi, I'm not Robert, but I think I can help a bit. A good age to start any sport is at about 1 year old, when the bones and joints are fully developed. I have seen that many start with preparations (obedience, bite - release (only toys!, maybe rugs, don't promote aggression, just a lil tug game)) earlier. The best thing would be if you would get in contact and ask your club/trainer at what age to start and which foundation to lay, what and how to do generally.
