So What's New by Herb Alpert (Trumpet Cover)

Музыка

So I've decided to make January 2022 a mini salute to trumpet players... one every week. Yeah, I know - a trumpet player "covering" another trumpet player - kind of an oxymoron. I'm starting with Herb Alpert, who was a huge influence on my playing as a young musician. LOVED his buttery smooth sound. I always did my best to sound like him. Here's my cover of "So What's New" as played by Herb Alpert. Thanks to Peter K J for the request.

Trivia: The composer Stig Anderson made a cover of this song that adds lyrics. This specific version is called Arvid and it has been recorded by several artists in Sweden including Siw Malmkvist, Lill Babs just to name a few.

I'm sure Herb Alpert will never see any of my videos, but I certainly enjoy playing his great tunes! He was my #1 model of what I wanted to sound like as a young trumpet player. 🎺

I absolutely do. My parents had Herb Alpert and Al Hirt albums, so I heard both and decided I liked Herb Alpert’s smooth as butter tone. I didn’t hear Harry James until my high school band director gave me a “mix tape” of all his favorite trumpeters. No doubt, trumpet players in 2024 have a lot of great models/mentors to choose from.

That was alot of fun bringing back memories from the 1960's. I played a bunch of songs from a Herb Alpert song book for a ladies' church social when I was in 7th grade. I was thrilled to receive $5.00 for my efforts which was the first time that I had ever gotten money for playing my trumpet! Thank you for this well-done arrangement!

Such a great story! My first "gig" was playing taps at a military funeral. The funeral home was across the street from the high school. My parents gave permission for me to leave school to do it. On the way home, the funeral home director handed me an envelope - which I assumed was just a thank you note. I opened it in Social Studies, to find a nice note and $20. That was 1977 or 1978. My thought then was, "wow, I can get paid for playing the trumpet". Thanks for watching, Philip! 🎺

@@MrBsCOVERS I loved your story about playing "Taps" at a military funeral. During high school my band director would many times get me out of school to do the same thing. Many times there was no money involved, but I do recall a few times where the Legion color guard would pull out their wallets and take a collection giving me a few dollars!

@@philiphoverman8458 Taps Across America is a good thing to help make people aware of he reason we celebrate Memorial Day. Jari also has a group Taps For Veterans using volunteers to play Taps at funeral services when requests come in. There is also Bugles Across America, all volunteers who play Taps at Veterans funeral/memorial services when requested. Too many times these days, officially since 1999, the Taps heard at these services is a recording, not a person actually playing with breath and feeling.
