Amazing! I’m happy for you! FIVE years ago, my husband and I had that same dream: to buy a large piece of land and turn it into a farm. It has been FIVE years, but we cleared it, built ponds, fenced the entire property, built a house, planted pasture, built a greenhouse...we are close to being self-sufficient. It is exciting. Expensive, though. First generation farms are a huge endeavor. The first thing we learned, we needed a BIGGER tractor. Hahaha!

22:50 Al, you can stop the beavers from plugging the culvert by putting in a smaller pipe that juts out a ways into the upstream water, below the water level. The beavers will patch up all around the culvert but there will still be the pipe for water to go through. Source: An old-timey wilderness book by Bradford Angier (forget which one)

If you go with selling some of the timber off of it, get a timber agent. They will make sure those who cut the property only take the right trees, don't leave a mess, and get the most dollar for your large trees. Troy at Red Tool House farm has a video on how he did it with his 200 acres and had it pay for over half of the cost that he paid for his land. Congrats on the purchase, and carry some protection from bears and other predators in that much property.

Congratulations on getting this property! I'm seeing a trespassing nightmare though. I have 70 acres and can't keep poachers/trespassers off my property. I can only imagine the task expanded to 500 acres! Names: "Heaven's Landing", "Lumnah Acres" (why change a good thing!), "Beavers-Are-Us!😂", "Blessed Acres", "BrookLand (Brooklyn)". You've got several years worth of Christmas trees there for sure. A tip would be to build your house as close to a healthy spring as you can. My house is right next to one of our springs and friends come all the time to take some of the water. The water has been supplying a house since at least 1900 and it is pure as God made it. We get about 6 gallons a minute. On our property you can hear trucks engine breaking on the road but the house is about 1200' from the road and what you do hear all over the property is our stream. When we get heavy rain you can hear boulders crashing down it. It roars like a freight train. You might want to look into some software that can help you map out your land and plan the layout. I found this one (www.agriwebb.com/au/features/farm-mapping-software/) but there are many more. Blessings to all.

Beavers dam where they hear water, it's the sound of falls that attract them. There is a company that produces a "dampener" for culverts which reduce the sound so beavers aren't tempted to block them up. This new property will be endless years of free Christmas trees. Great news and so happy for you.

Never change your name. Lumnah Acres will always be perfect. I hope we still get to watch you in the next 10 years of projects. To watch you as a family growing and to see Miss Olivia turn into a young woman and onto her own projects. I can't even imagine finding 500 acres of pure bliss and blessings. Perhaps Jamaica Cottage shop will have to have their own line eventually of "Lumnah Builds". Oh and I would definitely love to see the new house being built, of course with Figaro's inspections and approval.

I had no idea there would be a whole new farm to watch being built! I get on here every day looking for your videos. You are such a blessing for all of us. I know you must have bear spray and protection with you as you explore your new land. You are very protective of your girls and yourself. Most animals will run from people, if given the chance. That way I could see the satellite view and where I had been and what I found in each place. I used labels like creek crossing, large oak etc. I was trying to pattern deer movement but you could use to plan the farm. Congratulations.

Congrats! Just have to share ...I've seen a documentary about beavers and how they built many many blocks on huge areas in a country (I believe it was Australia). The take away was when the country was suffering a horrific drought, this area with the beavers was the only place that had water... thanks to the beavers.

Once you get the beaver dams under control and cleaned out, your land will be even more beautiful. I loved hearing the water sounds. You could tape it to sleep by or relax. I THINK YA'LL HAVING A DRONE REALLY ADDS TO YOUR CHANNEL. I had just joined when you both planted garlic together. Enjoyed that video also. I'm going to have to find the video, but there's a short documentary on the use of brook sounds to get beavers to move to other areas. It's a cool technique, and given how beavers can help you maintain your land should they be in the right area, will be useful to you in the future.

If they keep 90% land as forest and log the old trees and plant new ones , its manageable. But the plans of pasture , cows, goats , maple sugar just Al and Gina cannot manage it as the scale of operation will be lot bigger. Its better to rent out the land or do JV deal . That way you can use it more productively and have extra hands and eyes to help you out if needed.

Wonderful. I have really been working backwards through your videos as I originally stumbled across a much later one one where you were putting up rafters for your barn. I was simply researching how to build a garden room on the back of my house (London, England) and was looking for some practical instruction! I am really grateful for the clear demonstrations of the carpentry and the wiring, and also the transformation of your container. But, beyond that, I am just bowled over with your vision! Building any one of the projects would be an achievement. Developing a farm from raw, uncultivated land is an amazing challenge. But 500 acres ! I thought I was doing well contemplating taking on a single room in a suburban back garden! Plus your enthusiasm and humility are a lesson in themselves. All the very best.
