hello my dears - after scanning through some of the comments tonight, i realized that the theatrics i used for "entertainment" purposes actually hurt my disabled viewers by making fun of celebrities for "being gross." i want to apologize. this was supposed to be a lighthearted video making fun of the ultra rich, but i should've considered the feelings of groups who actually can't shower multiple times a week/who do not have access to what-is-considered-by-the-majority as "good hygiene"! what i wanted to stress in the video is not that it's anyone's fault for not having the accessibility or even implying that people are worthy of less respect because of their personal hygienic practices. the point i wanted to get across is that it's so incredibly hypocritical how rich, able-bodied white people were the ones to create this hierarchy of "appropriate" hygiene used to oppress marginalized groups, only to break the "rules" themselves and expect everyone to just be okay with it. coming from an asian background, my interactions with "smelling bad/good" were rooted in my ethnic identity - with white kids hating on the smell of incense or asian foods or tiger balm. and i think many of the comments written by poc are reflective of their same annoyances with colonialism and how that's affected their own hygienic practices. it was impulsive of me to focus my narrative on this perspective when i have such a big platform that reaches so many cool people, and i should've taken more care to investigate the experiences of others. i'm so grateful that a handful of people have come forward and felt the courage to share their own experiences with this subject. i've learned a lot just from reading a few comment threads! and now, what i would really love in the future is for us all to recognize the intersectionalities and complexities of hygiene before commenting so that no marginalized people feel bad about themselves. much love, fuck jeff bezos, and have a good night 🌱

To explain what most here seem not to be realizing: Different people's skin really does vary, from those that produce a lot of oil/sweat to those that really don't. So for some it is necessary to use soap/shampoo every single day, but for others with drier, less oily skin and with sweat glands that don't produce much this can be irritating. Additionally, once you stop regularly stripping your skin of its natural oils every day with soap, your skin actually can begin to self-regulate better. Dermatologists really do recommend washing only vital areas with soap, and letting warm water take care of the rest. The beauty industry is largely to blame for the idea that we need to be stripping our body's oils with harsh chemicals every single day so as only to have to replenish them with artificial moisturizers and (carcinogenic!) artificial fragrances.

It really depends on the workout and thr matobolism, I used to train with a coworker and he has Crohn's so he basically did only strength workouts with almost no sweating, cause his need was to gain mass in order for his immunity medicine to have a better effect since it depends on his mass. And he is one of those people that have very fast metabolism, had to eat 300 calories a day just to maintain his weight. Not me tho, I need a shower after almost every workout. i’m autistic, as a child i was neglected and i was never taught to care about my personal hygiene or my appearance. when i hit puberty i’d wash my private parts and take a full shower maybe once a week. at school my classmates would talk behind my back and giggle, i thought nobody liked me bc i didn’t talk much and i was socially awkward, i had no clue that they were teasing me for being dirty. at one point even the teachers would make jokes and my classmates would laugh, that’s when i realized what was happening… so i started showering constantly, i had to wake up really early because the school was far away and in winter i’d leave my house with my hair wet just to show everyone that i was clean… i started obsessing over dirt and i developed severe germaphobia that affects me to this day. so if you meet someone like my younger self instead of making fun of them please just talk to them in private and be honest.

Absolutely agree with that! this is adult behaviour too, people feel like they shouldn't tell someone when something is up. Like if a co-worker smells, no one will tell them out of fear of being rude, or at the most they will devise a plan to give them deodorant, and hope they get the message, and dumb shit like that. Just tell the person! damn. If I ever have something going on, I really hope someone can let me at least know. I always let other people know (about whatever it is), even if it's not the most awkward-free moments (not that I ever drag it out or delve into the subject, I want it to be as casual, friendly and quick and possible without any judgement or awkwardness, and then we return to our business without making a big deal about it in the slightest), but it has to be done! surely it's worth it for them, to now know.

I'm discounting some of my friends who have mental health problems who may not be able to maintain their personal hygiene and/or struggle financially (legitimate reasons). But as for the last point, people back home almost have nothing and they still manage to shower every day using tabo (bucket) and cold water. As for me here, I shower every day still. If my entire family and known relatives and ancestors have been bathing every day why should I stop because some white rich affluent person says they don't?? My skin is perfectly fine, I just make sure to moisturise and oil up my hair because the air here is pretty dry. I use dove bar soap and shampoos free of sulphates and stuff. Exactly, and the fact that not all bad hygiene is related to smell. What if they have a cut they haven’t said about and it gets infected from the lack of washing? What if they get sick because of the germs and bacteria they’ve accumulated from not washing? Sweat creates a moist and warm environment for germs to grow in, even if it doesn’t create a smell. But also just like what is the purpose? Like what are you teaching your kids?

I think another aspect of this, particularly when it comes to bathing children, is that middle class and low-income parents risk having CPS called on them if their children are deemed “dirty”. Sending your child to school unbathed can be considered neglect, and children have been removed from their parents because of this. Flexing that your children only get a bath when they “smell” definitely reflects a level of privilege that most people do not have.

Well, I think (I'm not sure) my parents would bath me and my sisters (together when we were little kids until like 9-10years old) only once a week (maybe twice?). We are white and middle-upper class so maybe that's why we could get away with it. Although I just always thought it was because my mother came from a poor background (little money) and didn't deem it necessary (as a habit) to bath that often (using up water). My marital grandparents did the same soo. Though we were taught to wash our crucial parts (face, armpits and genital area) with a cloth and soap everynight before bed and comb our hair in the morning to look presentable. Going into puberty my sisters and me obviously started showering on our own (+ more often).

As a disabled person who can’t shower everyday due to needing assistance to bathe, it’s not the celebrities that are irking me. After all, they (or at least the two couples that started it) are right. Wash the important bits every day (I use baby wipes, and I also use a very gentle chemical exfoliant on a cotton pad for under my arms- it kills the bacteria that cause BO), but apart from that, twice a week is fine. I also do the whole clean linen thing, which is working really well for me. As you can see from my pfp, I do understand how historical dress worked, and this is one aspect that does work really well. No, what really irks me are all the people now saying “ew! If you don’t scrub every inch of your body every day, then you’re disgusting!” Wow. Thanks. Nice to know you think a lot of disabled people are disgusting. This same thing happened with the “discourse” around wyt people not scrubbing every inch of their legs every time they shower. Also, my skin is better. I used to shower at least once a day, often multiple times, in very hot showers. But then I’d also have to slather myself in moisturiser (and get someone else to help, because reaching your upper back is difficult, and that was the worst place, because I’d sit right under the beating shower, and it would be my upper back that got the brunt of it). Now my skin isn’t anywhere near as dry as it was. It was at the point that my skin would sting and be pretty painful after a shower. Derms are right when they say it’s not good for your skin. And while teens, with their greater output of hormones and oil need to shower the most, preteens don’t need to shower unless they’re dirty, and the same is even more true for babies. So while I don’t care that much about celebrities, the first two couples at least were right, according to doctors, and I don’t appreciate being called disgusting by all these people virtue signalling how clean they are. And I do remember “cleanliness is next to godliness”. And if you mention disabled people, it’s always, “oh I didn’t mean *them*”. Really? Cause there were no caveats in those comments, and it’s not like our skin works differently. If it’s disgusting not to scrub every inch every day for an abled person, it’s not any less gross for a disabled person. It’s just that they have lower expectations of disabled people. It shows their whole arse when it comes to being ableist, is what I mean. And there’s so much of it in all of the comments sections on every video or article about this topic. And that is what I don’t like. They’re wrong, medically speaking, and it’s ableist as all heck. And they’re making me stand up for celebrities.

I don't know if Robert Pattinson is the best person to demonstrate this. He's kinda known for being a bit of a weirdo in general. Also from what I remember of the Twilight era both Robert and Ms.Bella wore the same clothes to avoid paparazzi because of how much they were hounded at the time. It didn't make much sense to shower every day when you were wearing the same clothes for like a week so eventually they just stopped doing so except for like work days I think. The reason they wore the same clothes was because you can't sell different photos of the same outfit because it seems like a picture of the same day so it's not as marketable. It wasn't an intentional choice to be 'holistic' is what I mean.

Thank you for including that guy who believed that "slavic people should do dirty jobs". I'm a slavic immigrant living in a Western European country. My mother is a cleaning lady and all of her colleagues are from Eastern Europe, they even communicate in their native language at work because they all (mostly) speak the same language. Growing up, I was very insecure about that because the non-immigrant kids at school always had parents that were doctors, lawyers etc. So I tried my best to NOT be seen as uneducated and to distance myself from jobs like that or even my heritage/culture because I was afraid that people would judge or even hate me for being slavic. It's weird to hear that back then, upper class people like that guy tried to justify his ideology by saying that "slavic people are stronger". It makes sense why even nowadays, people have these weird stereotypes of slavic people in their heads. And even we ourselves sometimes perpetuate them, by thinking that we are "built different" and that we have "strong genes" because we drink alcohol all the time and do labour intese jobs. Oh, the irony.

According to him, we are the "strongest people on earth". This is what I mean. People are straight up fetishizing us... and WAR. Imagine thinking that wars make you "cool" or "strong". No, it destroyed my entire family you fcking idiot. How can someone be so ignorant about being so dmn offensive. Wtf.

I’ve realized being deemed “respectable” whilst not looking “put together” is such a privilege. If a black woman walks around with “messy” hair, people stare. If a white woman walks around with “messy” hair, she’s “natural” or even a trendsetter. People won’t assume the white woman is “dirty” but “carefree.” I notice this also applies to fatphobia. From what I’ve heard, people living with obesity feel they need to look their best or “put together” at all times so they’re not stigmatized to be lazy. If a thinner person wears sweatpants and a hoodie with no makeup people will likely have less stigmatizing connotations. Ugh.

That's interesting. I developed pretty severe eczema on both of my hands last winter because I washed them so much (because of the corona.) I tend to have dry skin anyway, and I wash my hands a lot, but I was probably washing them 2 or three times more than usual as I was so worried about contracting covid from a surface... then i had to worry about being more susceptible to germs when I went shopping because of the cracks in my skin (from the eczema.) I actually saw a poster, posted in my apartment complex' laundry room, on how to wash hands, and it said 'wash with hot or warm water and soap.' I had always thought the heat was as important as the soap- I was taught as a kid to use water as hot as possible. I had to retrain myself to use warm, not steaming, but it took a little while. I actually experienced a milder form of hand skin eczema in previous winters because of my dry skin, frequent handwashing and the cold, but nothing like the skin I had last winter.

Even though I know that isn't true, it still has a negative affect on your mind as a disabled person. As a Scandinavian (where not showering every day & only washing your hair 2 times per week is PERFECTLY NORMAL) autistic (sensory hyper-sensitivity aka shower water physically hurts, among the MANY sensory things that comes with showering) person with both mental illness & chronic fatigue disorder I don't shower every day. My curly hair don't need to be washed more than once per week & would rather be damaged if I did more. It takes more than 30 minutes to brush & wash this hair & hours to dry this Merida-hair. Ain't nobody for time for that lol. Do people even consider that it's possible to have other hygiene NEEDS, routines & habits than theirs? Doesn't feel like it! Resources. What type of lifestyle & work your do. The prejudice, "expectations" & such that comes with your ethnicity/class. The CLIMATE you live in. IF you (are able to) exercise etc. The fact that people have to DEFEND their habits/culture etc & prove their "good hygiene" as soon as they don't scrub their skin off every single day in a very specific type of way, routine... just ridiculous. You're right!! I can't believe how divisive this issue is, and some of the judgement in people's comments.... CLEARLY there are many factors, like you listed, and what is right for your body will differ based on your body, climate, lifestyle etc... But it seems to have really bugged people, a lot of these comments are heated. My hair is curly and longgg, it takes nearly an hour to wash it and brush through, then another half hour to style after washing (if I want my hair to manageable/not a massive hassle to deal with every day). I probably wash my hair once a month - refresh my curls with water when needed. And guess what, my hair is clean, and people actually always comment on how nice it looks and smells. So there!! That's right for me and my body, and maybe not for others. I would recommend not washing when your body/hair doesn't NEED washing, but I'm not gonna start telling others what to do with their body. Can't believe how judgemental some of these comments are. Here's a thought: if you can't tell I haven't washed my hair for a month, then it's clearly not as greasy and dirty and smelly as you assume it would be..... Remember we are animals, and in nature animals don't shower everyday with soap....

You're story is relatable. I'm chronically ill, autistic and I live in a moderate climate. I wash my hair twice a week, shower every other day (and wash myself with a washcloth on the alternating days) and only use soap on the bodyparts that get smelly. Recently I've read several people saying things that boil down to: "OMG, if you don't wash your legs with soap, you're disgusting!!1!" Which makes no sense whatsoever, unless you roll in the mud every day. I know that it can be different, depending on the work you do and the climate you live in, but basically every doctor and dermatologist will tell you the same thing: you don't have to shower every day, and you don't have wash your entire body with soap. Oh, and washing your hair every day is bullshit that companies came up with to sell more shampoo. So people can GTFO with their "disgusting". I'm just as clean as they are.

It removes a lot of the required oils that our skin and hair need, so we shouldn't over-shower. Also, as a person with several medical conditions, I can often find it difficult to stand for long periods in the shower etc, so it can be tough at times. However, when you read these articles about celebs who actually smell bad on set, that's a weird rich person problem. There's no excuse to smell bad on set, if you sweat or soil yourself, you need to clean yourself.

Very interesting video. I myself had that when I was a teenager someone said to me, in front of a group other teens, that I stink. I've been struggling with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), my doctor told me they couldn't help me. They told me that I don't have enough sweat glands in my body, so my body overproduces sweat in the areas where I can sweat to make up for it. Unfortunately my armpits is one of the areas where I sweat excessively. The doctor told me that if they do any of the procedures they normally do to treat hyperhidrosis, that I would likely get overheated. I've tried all kinds of deodorant, even very expensive ones that claim to help people who have hyperhidrosis. Unfortunately none of them decrease the amount of sweat, but at least now I have found one that covers the smell. Unfortunately when I was a teen I hadn't found one yet, so I did smell a bit back then.. I do still feel uncomfortable and embarrassed about my sweating. I usually have visible sweat marks under my armpits on my clothing, I often try to hide my armpits.

Only exception is if you get actual dirt and debris on you on a daily or regular basis, like through your job (e.g. carpentry) or hobby (e.g. gardening). If you’re struggling with mental illness your top priority should always be to take care of yourself. Smelling bad should not hinder you from doing so, so ignore anyone who says it should. TLDR; You taking care of yourself (in the way that benefits you personally) is much more important than people feeling inconvenienced by how you smell.

The worst part is the no soap thing is based on a half truth- harsh soaps will absolutely dry out your skin, too much anti bacterial stuff is bad, and washing your hair every day isn't a must for most people. Personally I think it does depend on your daily habits, routines and to some degree your biology. If you sweat a lot because you workout everyday or you live in a hot climate, or you just sweat a lot in general, as well having dirty jobs where you visibly get dirty...you should probably bathe everyday. If not...I dont think its that bad to not bathe every day. I still wouldnt recommended once a week or less though.

I do think we should turn on “holistic” beauty though. It has nothing holistic to it it’s just marketing and pseudoscience. Words like “organic and clean and non-toxic and natural” aren’t even regulated in the industry so they mean nothing but whatever the company that sells it to you does, often coming with a high price tag. Clean beauty only distracts efforts from actual problems like sustainable and humane production and research, forcing the hand of world markets when maybe it would be better if we focused on actual solutions to more sustainable production, shipment and packaging. Anyway, rant over haha

Exactly. I don't care if its "organic" if that tea tree essence was harvested with slave labor, and packaged in thick plastic bottles with no refill options?? And if it costs twice the price for half the truth, what's the point. Same with food, you see it a lot in "organic, cruelty free" food, when massive cruelty against *humans* have been enacted to access the food, which is overpriced at the expense of the workers who are paid pennies, if at all. Besides, a lot of "organic" lifestyle promotions was driven by a traditionalist white supremist. Thats not to say the other ways are inherently better or good, its just a stupid performance to make poor people poorer, and shame them for issues they cant control...

The only person with any expertise and medical background I saw talk about this, dermatologist Dr. Dray, pretty much agreed with them for the most part. There's a lot of assumptions about hygiene being made. The thing is everybody is different and needs a different amount of bathing to get rid of smells or protect their skin. Also, I thought they meant they SOAP their bits and just use water for other parts. I'm not convinced that their bathing habits are due to their celebrity status and are any different than regular people. I saw a meme on reddit before the podcast blew up talking about only washing the bits and a shit load of people agreed that that's what they do. A lot of people maybe bathe only three times a week or only wash their bits and no one ever knows, because not everyone smells so quickly and water is really good at cleaning. I only take a bath every day because boiling myself soothes my soul.

One thing I feel like we’re missing with Mila+Ashton, and Kristen+Dax is that they are talking about their kids. The others are talking about themselves. Small children (babies and toddlers) get dirty because they are figuring out the world around them. They touch and slobber on all the things, and play with dirt. They are very tactile and interested in texture. They don’t eat with utensils well, they don’t think about crumbs or spills. They are always some what dirty. Parents are exhausted humans especially during baby and toddler years. I interpreted both of these couples speaking from exhaustion and being realistic to the fact that kids will always find their way into mess. I also detected a lot of sarcasm coming from both couples. What’s interesting is that both of these couples claim they are very hands on when it comes to raising them. Nannies are widely available to them. If they have all this access to cleanliness, why are they making light of it? I’m not trying to defend them, but the discourse around this was really odd to me.

Fast forward to now, my skin got EVEN MORE sensitive, to the point where I can only really wash my face with a gentle cleanser in the evening. If I do it 2x a day, I break out. A point on your summary of the history of soap use: soap could be extremely caustic! Without regulations, the lye concentration in batches of soap could vary greatly, and it more than likely would burn you if you washed your skin with it. It's no wonder that people focused on washing their clothes, rather than their bodies, if they were risking burns with every bath.

  • @hotjanuary

    @hotjanuary

It had nothing to do with regulations. The old method of making lye didn’t produce repeatable concentrations, so you never knew how much lye you were using (as people made it themselves using ash and rainwater). Now we have factory made lye you can easily measure out on a scale to know exactly how much you’re adding. And if you’re some kind of historical enthusiast and want to make your own lye like in the olden times, we have electric pH meters so that you can calculate the concentration you’ve made. It’s just a case of science catching up to make production less of guesswork and more of a repeatable process.

Hygiene is a super personal and also cultural and contextual thing.... It's really something that I wish people would just be less judgmental about and understand that there isn't really a right or wrong way :/ I don't think that anyone actually likes smelling bad or feeling dirty - so if they are they probably have a good reason that you don't know!

  • @sullen-girl

i hate to say it but the science is on mila + ashton's side on this. most dermatologists advise against using soap on your whole body (unless you are visibly dirty). detergents strip your skin causing our bodies to overproduce oils + bacteria. plus, sweat is water soluble so simply getting you body wet with clean water is going to wash away residual sweat. for the most part, soap is really only necessary in the "vital regions" mila and ashton were talking about (basically anywhere on your body that has skin to skin to contact...like your butt, groin, arm pits, folds, and underneath your breasts). don't get me wrong, i'm still going to wash my whole body cause it's what i'm used to but i'm kinda tired of the internet overreacting to this story without even doing an ounce of research.

So, personal story: When I was a teenager, I struggled super hard with my smell. I couldn't smell it (still can't), but my mom (who has a quite sensible nose) would always tell me when I was smelly. So, it took me years to deal with my smell and it was even harder because sometimes it wasn't just because the day was too hot or I did some exercise, sometimes I was just smelly. After many years, I finally figure out the best deodorant to use and how to dribble thr bad smell, but it took a while. And that's why when I see people so proudly saying "I don't shower" I just give the judge eye because, well, maybe they don't stink as much as I did, but I still can't believe they are "smelling good" for not washing for days...

One of my uncles has a sister who has this problem. I've heard stories about how hard it was for her in school because she literally couldn't help it, her body just naturally creates strong odor in a way that most other people don't experience, so she got ostracized and made fun of a lot. :( I think she eventually found ways to mitigate it a little bit when she got older, but it's still an issue for her.

People have a lot more allergies these days, it’s actually well supported by science that we need some dirt to build an immune system properly as children. Also our skin has mircobiomes that get removed if you wash with soap too much. Obviously, washing frequently is pretty important, but we don’t need to over-wash and use toooo much soap (actually a thing). I totally agree with what you’re saying about the classism and systemic implications of who gets to ‘be clean.’

I was gonna say hearing the celebrity stories made me feel better about myself but most people in the comments are for some reason disgusted by the idea of not showering every single day. I've never enjoyed showering even when I was small and developing clinical depression as I grew up has really not helped with that. I've been trying to combat this by creating a playlist that makes me feel nice, cheery and pretty which makes the task of taking care of myself seem like less of a chore. It's helped but it is still difficult to find the time/energy to do it every day

I'm sorry to hear about your struggles. But you're absolutely right! I'm a little shocked by the comments, to be honest. And if it makes you feel better: It is actually not healthy to shower everyday. Your skin has an oily layer that protects you against external influences and everyday showering can lead to a more unstable immun system, because with every shower you getting rid of this protective layer on your skin. One of the reasons why more and more people are getting allergies for example and allergies are a "Western World" phenomenon.

Yes! Solidarity! I have also experienced depression to the point where I wouldn’t/couldn’t wash for weeks and brushing my teeth seemed too hard. I had a friend who also struggles with anxiety and MH stuff and she was still a little grossed out when I told her I hadn’t really brushed my teeth when I was doing the worst. It bummed me out because I thought she’d understand. I’m doing much better now (because of finally finding meds that work for me) but I still have some reluctance to shower. Something in my brain still makes it seem like it is a hassle and inconvenient (like there is never a good time). I was very glad to read about how dermatologists recommend only washing vital areas because that’s what I usually do anyways, I just felt like maybe it was wrong before.

'Hygiene' is so culturally specific. Eg when I was little my family would take a long bath once a week in the winter (v cold climate) but we would always wash particular parts of bodies every day/several times a day using a lota (bc we're Muslim). When I grew up I moved to the West and switched to having a shower every day, but I still sometimes have it in the evening rather than the morning, which some people find weird, and my partner was horrified at the concept of a lota when I first explained it haha.

When in 'There She Goes', Em tells Si to get away from her because he was stinky (I now reckon because of alcohol), it took me by surprise because somehow I had never imagined white, decently dressed people as dirty/stinky without them having stains all over them. The idea is so deeply rooted in colourism, among us brown people, of darker skinned people being unclean.
