    @@platniumdragon115 I find that having everyone remove their shoes on arrival relaxes them a bit, and encourages them to stay longer. They feel a bit more “at home” in my home. Every session is goes long, and we get more done. Of course, with such a relaxed atmosphere, occasional pranks do occur. My own pranks are often themed as warnings about things they will encounter next session, though my players haven’t figured that out yet. The D4s were related to a trap involving caltrops, a pit, and a nasty breed of fungus, in a goblin lair. That one nearly took out the Pali, who insisted on taking the front to protect from ambush. Of course, once the rogue was on front for trap detection, he led them into an ambush. 😈

  • @DaWishard

    @DaWishard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Not read your backstory. Worst things that can happen is you surprise your DM with your characters motives, have the DM decide what your character is like and they make up your story, and playing a character that isn't exactly what you wanted upon creation. But with the right mindset you could probably just roll with it and just roleplay what you got or show your characters ideals through gameplay. Have every NPC hate you basically shuts down everything all together. Backstory, your alignment, God affiliation or lack of, your ideals, your charisma and basically your characters "human" rights are stripped if EVERY single God dawned NPC hates and mistrust you. This one is far more frustrating and unavoidable to make any fun out of.

    I never care about the players backstory because I always planning on them getting killed and if they survive, bitten by a slaad or brain tadpoled. It lets the players know how much you care about their plans and aspirations while enforcing the chaotic random unfairness of life but I also believe it's perfectly okay for players playing older characters like Wizards and I always say if you're playing a wizard in one of my games he had to have gone to school for at least twenty years he's a man in his 40s 50s or 60s he has heart problems show in stressful situations like combat fleeing from danger climbing too much sun or a stressful discussion should trigger heart attack resistance rolls. Also just randomly for those seriously old mages

For realistic spread, don't just flip a coin 2: the Truly Immovable Rod. Careful which side of the planet you're on when you activate it, it locks according to universal coordinate 3: usually DM, good at it. Since you're consistently surprised that a large chunk of your audience has little to no experience with D&D I'll tell you my experience. Living in a country with a non-existant nerd culture, D&D and other TTRPGs were just things I'd hear about online, I can't tell you how envious I was. It just sounded so fun and... engaging I guess. I was most envious of the stories that came out of it. Most just don't have the opportunity to play irl and are too shy for online. Now, since then I did try online D&D a few times, as well as WFRP... But the result was the same all times. I'm a nervous wreck when it comes to roleplaying, I stutter a lot and I'm just a mess in general. On top of that I tend to get unbearable bored when I don't have anything to do (mostly happens when it's not my turn in combat) I have attention issues anyway so even though it makes me feel bad, I tend to browse reddit when I'm not doing anything. So yeah, wasn't what I was imagining every game I joined died someways in too...

    Everyone I know loves d12’s, I think it’s something about the look of them. They look nice. Good hand feel too, d4’s are kind of awkward, your not really rolling them cause they don’t really roll, it’s more of a shake-and-drop and it’s just less satisfying.

    I like to allow my players to choose either to start at level 2, or to roll (d4-1) to choose their level, for a potential of starting at levels 1, 2, or 3. As for me, the highest level character I ever had was an 17 wizard/cleric/true necromancer, back in high school. Never made it to 20.... Maybe I would have but I've been the forever DM for 16 years now. Ended up boosting my old lev 17 necromancer to 19 and using them as a villain in a campaign to kill them off ad they hadn't been touched in years. It was bittersweet but a very memorable portion of the overall campaign.

Also at the same time I will play a montage where my character spends decades grinding XP and going from lvl one to lvl 20. That was fun. I'm going to imagine more now. It always seemed dumb to me that some classes don't get their sub class until later levels. Want to be an artillerist artificer? No gun until level 3. Wizard who studied X in school? No, you learned your school of magic by killing a slime. Trained to be any of the interesting fighter subclasses? Too bad, your cavalier doesn't have a mount, your psi warrior forgot his Jedi training, your arcane archer only gets his years of training on the walk back from a cave. Many classes are written like they expect a time skip between level 2 and 3.

    1:34 Anyone else feel it that one should have gone more like: "1. Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic Good/just Good 2. Neutral Evil/Chaotic Neutral 3. Neutral Evil/Chaotic Evil, Neutral 4. same as in the poll 5. same as in the poll"? The first answer would be the most "right thing to do" out of these (in my opinion), so I fail to see how it wouldn't fit any given variety of Good, albeit with a difference in the exact reasoning as to why you would do it depending on your stance on the Lawful/Chaotic axis. The second doesn't strike me as good at all; you are bargaining with someone's life here - if your character demands compensation for saving someone, they're either an opportunist or out to spite whoever is affected: What is 'Neutral Good' about that? Lastly, I can see the point of the third answer being considered Neutral in a "not getting involved" sense, but the _"and see what happens"_ bit conjours up the image of onlookers rather filming the scene with their phones than call an ambulance, which I wouldn't really call neutral, so much as gross negligence. I know D&D's (and Pathfinder's) alignment systems are neither to be taken too rigidly, nor should they be compared to real-world morality as there is no universal definitions of good and evil in the real world and everyone's opinion on what should be considered what will be different, but within the confines of D&D, would this take make more sense? Less? I'd like to hear your thoughts on this _completely non-controversial_ topic. Edit: Formatting was all messed up.

    Personally, I like the d4 least not because it has the fewest sides, but because it doesn't actually roll, it just bounces or flops. As for leveling up, I like a hybrid XP + milestones system. That way you can get XP as normal, but when you reach a truly important milestone in the overall narrative or a specific character's storyline you give them bonus XP to help them level up faster. This also makes milestones more significant to the players, and the events associated with them more memorable.
