So Many Pieces! Farmall MD Carb & Manifold Rebuild

Today I'm working on the Farmall MD carb and intake manifold rebuild. Since the MD starts on gas and runs on diesel, the carburetor and intake manifold are very unusual, with so many pieces! I disassemble both, talking about how each part works along the way. Then it's time for a thorough cleaning and assessment of what new parts are needed.

I told my buddys about it before i bought it..they said,... hell yeah!!... they'll help me with it... until they found out it starts on gas and switches to diesel? Then you find out who your friends really are!! Ha ha! Had to learn it all on my own! Keep up the good work sir! I'll be watching! And Thank you.

    It's neat the way they incorporated the pony motor into the diesel engine as one complete unit. Probably costs less than adding a separate starting motor to the engine. Start the engine on gas and let it warm the diesel motor then switch over to diesel to do the work. Interesting technology for sure. What's amazing is your finding parts for that old girl.

    If I recall, that secondary tube you weren't sure the purpose of, is to equalize the pressure in the fuel bowl to prevent it from flooding the carb by drawing too much fuel through the main orfice.

    You needed a small left handed drill for that broken screw. Use the dremel to make a dimple right in the center and then drill through. My experiences have usually shown the screws will back out at some point in the drilling, and it could be possible to salvage the original threads. Might have been too hard to get to it though.

    One vote being cast for keeping with the magneto. They start a little better at low speed in the cold. My H with a distributor did not start very well in the winter vs my H with the mag on it. Both are kept in tune & I run 10W30 in them. Can usually source NOS coils for the mags with no problems. Always keep a few on hand. Also haven't had much of a problem with the mag coils going out. It's the coils for the distributor system that give me grief. Regards!

    Shimming up the "plate" helps to improve the fuel and air mixture. You might NOT want to return it to "spec" with today's modern fuels. I can tell you from experience with my dad's TD6 dozer that we had better results with the shimmed carb than without them. (the dozer is another gas over diesel engine...pretty similar to what you have on that M) Any way ya go tho, it's neat to watch!

    The fuel inlet tube you pointed out appears to be ported to the side of the choke plate. When choked, the extra vacuum would siphon fuel there, enriching the mixture. It's probably needed with the odd fuel well + mixing chamber design of the main jet, which I would guess lacks enough flow when choked to provide more fuel.

  • @JustaFewAcresFarm

    @JustaFewAcresFarm

    3 жыл бұрын

    See my other reply below...I assume it has something to do with the choke, but it seems to be it's located on the wrong side of the choke.

  • @rhekman

    @rhekman

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JustaFewAcresFarm I can understand where you're coming from thinking it's on the wrong side not being downstream of the choke where the vacuum is. I'm certainly no carburetor expert, but the key to fuel mixture in a carb is not just the presence of vacuum, but also flow. By placing a port just upstream of the choke, air velocity increases past the blades as it is closed. The greater the velocity, the greater the pressure drop, increasing fuel. In effect, a rudimentary venturi. When the choke is off (open), the fuel inlet sees near atmospheric pressure and reduced air velocity, reducing or eliminating the "extra" fuel. I've seen similar designs with fuel ports in lawnmower engines. I guess there's some truth to the old saying about carburetors just being "calibrated fuel leaks" ;-)

    When you're pulling these intricate little pieces apart, I'm surprised you don't keep better track of where they came from, and their orientation. For example, I'd guess those two butterfly valves would work best installed in their original sides of the manifold, same edges out as they were originally assembled. Did you keep better track of that than it appears in the video, or you just assume they're identical, and it doesn't matter.. ?

  • @JustaFewAcresFarm

    The parts book's exploded diagrams, along with a photo record give me the information I need. In the case of the butterfly valves, I can tell which belongs in which port by the marks I made removing them, and which side faces out can be seen by the wear marks left on their faces. That may or may not be important, and I'll find out when I test fit them in each port before final assembly.
