So I tried playing FALLOUT 4 In 2023...

With Starfield being less than two months away, I'd like to begin my excursion back to some of the older Bethesda Game Studios titles. The goal is to reflect on the rights and wrongs of their games as we discuss what would be nice to see Starfield bring over or even evolve. From Creation Club and console mods all the way to craft and base building, let's go through Fallout 4 once more and see what it's all about.

Yikes. Awful story, 1 skeleton with a note = environmental storytelling. No choices. Awful radiant quests. Miserable factions and their depiction / impact on the world... the only good thing about fo4 was roaming the open world killing stuff and picking up trash, at least it had that I guess. I'm praying Emil had very little to do with actual writing on starfield, and that the factions feel cool again

I really resonate with your point that modder's don't necessarily "save" BGS games. I had a great time with vanilla Oblivion, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 all on console. You know I also actually agree that modders make the games better but they don't "save" them. I have platinumed (or gotten every achievement, 100% completed, w/e) Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, NV, and FO4 each, which means I had to complete them all without mods at least once and they were perfectly playable and enjoyable games even with nothing but the official content. People like mods because they can change things they don't like or just add more stuff that's catered specifically to their preferences, so naturally they gravitate towards that, and that's fine, but the idea that the games are just unplayable trash without mods is disingenuous.

"Modders improve BGS games, not 'save' them." I agree entirely - I played Oblivion at launch on Xbox 360 and PC, Fallout 3 on PC, Skyrim on PC at launch and PS3 GOTY, Fallout 4 on PC at launch and then PS4, and now I'm going to play Starfield on PC. My first play through on PC for all of the above was vanilla (with all DLC available where applicable, otherwise bought later), and then again at least once modded to some degree (Oblivion and Skyrim many times and massiveoy modded eventually). All were great launch experiences - some of my favourites. Yes, the unofficial patches add a bunch of fixes, and new content fleshes them out significantly. But the base vanilla game of all of these games are still great.

I really, really like Fallout 4. I appreciate BGS for trying new things rather than making the same game like Fallout 3 (which I think is the best Fallout easily). Of course, things like the dialogue system and the voiced protag didn't work. But the settlement system really did. It was the perfect role-playing mechanic to introduce to the world of Fallout, harkening back to the themes of exploration and rebuilding in Fallout 1. It also gave clutter items more value than just X Caps. I do think Fallout 4 is VERY important to Starfield. Starfield directly addressed FO4's major problems with its silent protag, deeper dialogue and persuasion system, return of classes in the form of backgrounds (thankfully not as strict as classes), traits from Daggerfall and Interplay Fallout, etc. A lot of people use 76 to look at Starfield, which imo is extremely ignorant and doesn't make sense. Fallout 4 is the best comparison because it was the last single-player BGS RPG. And its a really good one despite it flaws. But those flaws will help make Starfield a better game. Great video as always Matty!

Jon of MATN uses the. level up system all the time to make specific character builds but he's playing to an audience using a theme and rule sets he creates and he sticks to them religiously. Like, nothing is forcing you to take perks outside a particular build. I get what you're saying but if you're disciplined enough you can build a really special character. I kind of like being an all-arounder but Jon did get me trying out stealth sniper builds and that made my game a lot more challenging.

Playing through it myself with a whole bunch of mods and in survival mode right now, doing a full sarcasm/evil character that looks like Walter White and it's actually quite fun because I never played that kind of character before. But after this playthrough that means there's no other "fresh" ways for me to replay the game, since there are only two options in this game: friendly/yes, or sarcastic/no.

I wouldn't say modders have saved Bethesda games either, but they are required to keep the communities alive. On their own, vanilla Skyrim and Fallout 4 would never approach the longevity they've realized with mods. That boundless creativity should be nurtured in Starfield; it's my hope that they make it more accessible rather than trying to put the clamps on things.

Yeah I kind of hope Starfield is a game that can stand on its own without needing a deep modding scene. That would be a real leap forward for Bethesda games. I'm not holding my breath though, after the creation club. It's like they have this mentality of "lets make a canvas and charge people to buy works of art painted on it." I hope that isn't the case for this game but I have my fears, not gonna lie.

Starfield has borrowed so much from Fallout 76 already that it's probably better to say that Starfield is like single player Fallout 76 in space more than Fallout 4 in space. Outposts are camps. Boost packs are basically the secret service jetpack. And if you use it on a low gravity planet then its like the secret service jetpack with the marsupial mutation. Wanted is a bloodied build. And Starfield's bloodied builds will be like Fallout 76 ones because there are three-star legendary items. So you'll probably be able to be a tanky bloodied build just like in 76. Shoot a bunch of anglers in 76, you get a bunch of adhesive. There's a creature like that in Starfield. Even some of Fallout 76's mutations have been repurposed, like Empath. There's a lot of 76 in Starfield, but Bethesda probably won't draw attention to that.

I definitely agree with you on how modders didn’t have to save the games, but they definitely can improve the quality however you see fit. I spent hundreds of hours playing each of the games vanilla until I really felt the need to start modding them into new experiences.

I never had a problem with my character in Fallout 4 having their own voice, in my case playing a female sole survivor she was voiced by Mass Effect's voice actress for Jack, I thought that was cool as shit. As long as I could, more or less, do the things I wanted to do I wasn't affronted by my character having a voice.

I think there will be a layered armor system BUT it will be a setting that basically you toggle. You will only see your space suits when explorong, but you'll aoutomatically switch you your "civies" when in major settlements. At least thats one thing i heard somewhere

So it essentially flips the concept. In some games (cyberpunk) you use armor for the stats but you can style your character with anything.

I love Fallout 4! Starfield got me into Fallout 4. And Fallout 4 is getting me excited about Starfield. I actually hadnt got into skyrim or fallout. I played Starfield - and I LOVE STARFIELD. But I kinda did everything, and now, with 200 hours since I last went through the unity, my game is getting a bit clunky. Anyway, Starfield made me curious to try Fallout 4. I did. And I am astounded. The game is quite moving. And frightening. The characters and stories are fascinating. And I really love every moment of it so far. I understand the fallout/starfield comparissons now. Fallout is much more polished (years after released, no idea how it launched). I know Starfield will get there with expansions and DLC and mods. Fallout 4 is getting me really excited about the future of Starfield. I love both of these games.

I still play F4! It’s my second favorite in the franchise(F3 is my favorite). I still love to check out my work on my Minutemen settlements. My favorites are Sanctuary, the Castle, & Vault 88. Also I’m not crazy about mods. Honestly I never use them. I like the original experience for each Fallout game. I’m really excited for the Space base & Space ship building for Star-field!!

I still play it on both Xbox Series X and Ps4. Honestly, if you saw the sheer amount of building mods on Xbox and PC you'd get more into modding. Place Anywhere, Do It Yourshelf, and OCDecorator change your Fallout life. Not to mention older mods like Better Stores, which adds in other ways for settlers to get food. I thought my Marina was good on PS4, but the other day I literally made one where settlers are raising Mirelurks and have a working boat for fishing (which I decorated). Not a single Carrot or Mutfruit in sight needed for anyone.

I really don't get the hate some people feel towards Fallout 4, I just recently finally played it and I loved everything about it (except the crashes). Even the levelling system, which you didn't like, was something I really enjoyed and I actually liked that you don't have to specialize in a certain path. And so far I'm not concerned about any part of Starfield, everything looks exactly like I'd wish, I don't even really mind the 30fps on console as long as it's stable

Platinumed every other Bethesda game, so feels wrong I don’t have this one. I also just miss them and this is the last game they’ll release on the platform 😂
