The only issue i found with it, is they crammed so much into 5 episodes. Effects, choreography, actors and actresses, Pretty good.

You're absolutely right. The only power ups that happens vs Toguro are when he removes the spirit cuffs and after Kuwabara goes down. I don't know why Joey expected anything else here.

Yeah, Yusuke was able to transform cause he was in the close proximity of the strongest demon, which is Yusuke's great great great ancestor. Cause he took over Yusuke's body.

To me its crazy they skipped over the saint beast, and genki's tournment. Those helped to form a bond between the group. Without that I didn't feel they had a connection like the anime.

@@shinkaiatsuya950 I was expecting that they'll save the Dark Tournament when I was watching it... then the final episode hit. Guess any potential second season will be based on the Sensui Arc.

My biggest problem with the live action is that none of the "cool moments" have any emotional weight to it because they skipped all the build-up. I wasn't emotionally invested in any of the characters because they weren't adequately characterized and developed and we didn't spend enough time with them to care.

Yeah. I thought the first three episodes were amazing. But the last two eps got too much with how much they skipped. Turning the dark tournament arc into a discount shishio arc (rurouni kenshin) didn't work at all.

I feel the same with the live action one piece. Don't get me wrong, it was decent... but skipped my favorite parts like the hypnotist dude and luffy getting hypnotized multiple times.

That Orange Juice thing was a big deal for me as a kid. Showed me how his villain was still so dedicated to taking care of his body he didn't want any alcohol. Was a huge role model example that honestly, kept me away from alcoholism in my college years.

The fact that it was only 5 episodes and they wanted to cover all the way up to the Dark Tournament arc, was the biggest flaw. There were a billion arcs in between and they had to skip so much story that none of the character interactions held any weight at all in the live action. Genkai was introduced and killed (DISRESPECTFULLY OFF SCREEN) in only one episode where if you were a casual fan or a new watcher, you wouldn't give a shit about Genkai, but she had a HUGE role in Yusuke's development. The Spirit Orb was also a very important part of Yusuke's strength and it took several scenes to show you how much inheriting the orb was gonna fuck you up and how it gave Yusuke the necessary power boost to finally compete with Toguro's level, where in the Live Action it was treated like it was a handshake. I love everything else. If I had to give it a constructive critique, I wish it was set in the 90s. Everyone's hairstyle would have made a ton of sense and it would have been such a vibe. Who wouldn't want to watch a modern interpretation of 90s Japan with martial arts and yokai and delinquent pompadours flying everywhere?

Fun fact: the dubbing in Portuguese (Brazil) was amazing/ground breaking among other animes an in this Yu Yu live action we got to watch the same voice actors (except for Kuwabara´s - he passed away) so despite always watching animes and live actions in Japanese, this one I watched in Portuguese and it was f dope!amazing

Tbh, Yusuke dub's voice has changed from what i remembered, which is to be expected, i mean, it has been almost 30 years since the anime aired here in Brazil?! So I almost didn't realise it was the OG guy dubbing Yusuke again, but when I heard Botan, Keiko, Koenma and Toguro's dubs? Oh boy!!! I almost cried, so much nostalgia rushed over me, flashbacks of my childhood, their voices where (somehow) unchanged! Good times! 😁

But wait, Yusuke doesn’t have his long haired Mazoku transformation until the Chapter Black arc not the Dark Tournament arc. Don’t get me wrong, Yusuke having his breakthrough and being able to access his full power against Toguro was still epic, but it wasn’t the long haired transformation you mentioned here.

true i was just about to say the same thing he didnt get his demon mode until sensui. i think it would have been worse if they changed it and added that to the togoro fight it made more sense for him to get it while fighting sensui too bc of his outlook on the world.

The long haired Yusuke transformation was from Sensui arc but since they scrambled the story, they might as well included that.

He never had the yokai transformation until fighting sensui in makai.. Why would he transform against toguro? All that happened against toguro is some strenght that came sort of out of nowhere, although you can say it came from the energy orb that Genkai gave him..

The strength that Yusuke got when fighting against Toguro came from the pain of loss. It is basically the exact same thing that pushed Gohan to reach Super Saiyan 2 in his fight against Cell during the Cell Games in DBZ.

So I just finished watching the anime like yesterday for the first time and I’m gonna watch the live action soon. Here is a hot take. I am predicting the live action will be just as good or better than the anime. Feel free to tell me what you liked about the anime or even the manga if you think the manga was better than the anime. My one gripe with the story is that the story is just a very heavy battle manga and not much else.

You know you're a 90s kid from the Philippines if you still call them "Eugene, Alfred, Vincent, and Dennis". And you still call the series "Ghost Fighters"

After One Piece I was really excited about this considering its one of my favourite series of all time - but to see how they crammed it into 5 episodes and essentially made it a greatest hits collection i was severely disappointed - i was hoping for multiple seasons

I haven't seen the Netflix one yet but from what I remember of the anime the arcs go like this: -Yusuke river city ransom like student introduction -Yusuke dying and coming back to life -First mission as spirit detective (Introducing Hiei and Kurama) -Genkai mini tournament (First real demon fight) -Training with Genkai time skip to Yokai bugs and Saint Beasts (One of the early cool arcs) -Rescuing Yukina at the Mansion (Togoro introduction) -Another small time skip and Dark Tournament Arc -Genkai's pupil and training game arc -Rogue Spirit Detective Arc (Shinobu Sensui) -Yusuke's Demon heritage Arc -Demon Tournament Now I didn't expect all that but I knew that it was going to be a series and it was my hope that the first season would at least include, Genkai, Saint Beasts and Yukina Rescue arc at the very least. With season 2 leading into the actual Dark Tournament. It being its own entire season because its the longest arc in the series I think.

I watched the anime semi-regularly back in like, the early 2000s when it was on Cartoon Network. I never rewatched it, so I figured this would be a good refresher. And the best way I can describe the live action is that, in my own recollection of the anime, it's the Sparknotes version of the anime. All the broad strokes of character development are there, all the main story points are there. They just took a novel and cut it down to a pamphlet. That's not to say it's bad, it's just VERY condensed. If you like it, watch the anime (or read the mangas) and you'll see all the story beats actually in their full glory.

I watched it yesterday and it did came to my mind the though of "I wonder if Joey already watch it" hahaha since I know how much of a big fan you are of YuYu Hakusho, not gonna lie, I was expecting a review for the live action and since I also liked it, I'm happy you did as well! specially cus I pretty much agree with all your inputs 👏

Great show, however, some stuff are rather offputting if you've watched the original. Would not be surprised if Season 2, if it were to happen, will jump straight up to Sensui like they did with the first season.

Having 8 episodes instead of the 5 we got would have helped a bit in the pacing problem my opinion. But overall, it wasn't bad.

Never seen the anime, never heard the story. Watched the live action on New Year's Eve. I quite liked it.

Yeah, I was very confused as to what he was talking about as he doesn't do that transformation until almost the very end of the manga/show.

I get excited whenever you talk about YYH. It's my favorite!

I’ve never watched or read the manga (never even heard of it prior to the show), I just watched the show because there are quite a few actors in it I enjoyed; so it’s nice to see a review from a manga/anime fan. It’s pacing definitely feels like it’s biggest hinderance, I had a hard time keeping up with who was who - but I really enjoyed the show else wise. I consumed it all at once, which probably didn’t help with how i felt about its pacing. I’d be interested in checking out the anime or manga at some point, but I’d also like to see more of the LA. I don’t know what Elder Toguro looked like in the original, but he actually kinda terrified me in the LA 😂 a little goofy, yes, but that was taken over by how creepy I found him. I’m glad Netflix and other companies are doing better with live actions. As much as I love watching anime, seeing this stuff in live action is actually really cool. And it brings people who usually wouldn’t try this stuff to the stories.

didn't Yusuke transform vs Sensui? or is it Toguro? maybe I'm remembering it wrong. It's decent for being only 5 episodes imo.

SPOLIER ‼️ ALERT ‼️ Yusuke got a power boost during both. In the Toguro arc he was beaten down then Kuwabara was beaten and Yusuke thought Toguro killed him. So Yusuke went calm berserk and defeated Toguro. During the Sensui battle, Yusuke was killed by Sensui before the gang went to the demon world to stop Sensui from unleashing the whole of the Makai onto humanity. Yusuke then came back to life because he was a descendent of the Mazoku. He came back stronger but wasn’t utilizing his full potential. In the fight against Sensui in the demon world Yusuke was possessed by his demon ancestor to show Yusuke his full potential defeating Sensui. Obviously I’m omitting details but there ya go.

Sensui. But that was at the point where Togashi was kinda...dying, irl due to sleep deprivation as a mangaka & wasn't quite able to put his all into the series at that point.

I've watched this as well, but without reading the Manga books first (it came up as one of the top ten series that particular week and I thought "why not?") and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. And I did think that five episodes was rather short and I was hoping that there were more in coming weeks (in that I had caught up with what had been released but there was more to come). If they do produce further series I'll be there for it and I really do hope that the season one moniker really does mean that there will be more. As a side, what do you think to "Blue Eye Samurai", Joey? Apologies if you've already brought a video about it that I've missed.

another thing if you noticed in the anime they say that yuske has a limit to his spirit gun. like that really added tension in the end fights. he had a limit to how much he could do it per day. this was missed out in the live action

Yusuke’s transformation is from the Sensui fight from Chapter black. I do think they missed out on the small details that really inform the characters and the connection between characters seemed to lack because they didn’t take their time and sped run to get the Dark tournament characters.

5 episode thing was the problem here. If they had bigger budget, they could have make it way better. But the fighting scenes were good. Also, Yusuke transformation happens during Sensui fight.

I think the actors/ actresses themselves did an absolutely amazing job. My only complaint is that they changed the characters motivations for doing things and as such took away from the characters.

Honestly, the live action series had SO much potential. But, it just blasted through the entire story in 5 episodes. The acting was great. I'm perfectly okay with them cutting a lot of the ordeal stuff with the egg. But, after that it was just so fast paced.

As far as live actions go, YYH was quite good! Not really something to write home about, but I think within five episodes they were able to trim what wasn't absolutely critical, but still kept what was necessary to tell a story. Kurama's wig though, was a crime against humanity.

The real main character in YuYuHakusho is truck kun who was featured prominently on all the isekai series that came after.

Yep, pretty much had the same issues with the adaptation you mentioned. Visual effects, choreography, and cast were very good. But even just 3 more episodes would have been much better to explain more details in the last 3/5th of the episodes. 1 episode to do Genki's tournament to show our spirit detective earning his place, another episode to expand those fights on the island as well as enjoying a more meaningful first encounter with Hiei, and yet another episode to better explain the fights with the Toguro brothers fights and backgrounds. 2 more episodes could include some other supernatural events showing the need for a spirit detective and showing the spirit worlds effects on the human world.

What was your favorite live action adaptation one piece or yu yu.

Wait I remember the progression being bad driver, ghost learning, accepting the offer and coming back to life. First case the stolen items that introduce Kurama and Hiei so later join to battle the Saint beasts controlling the insects. Haven’t read the manga yet is it really that much different than the anime?

I was expecting it to be A LOT worse than what it was. It was pretty decent. I had to get used to how Kuwabara's hair looked (what is it with Japan Netflix and not doing hair right? We're looking at you Live Action FMA). I was quite curious about how they were going to fo Kurama and Hiei and they looked damn good, especially Kurama and he's my favorite character. So, over all, I would recommend it. Also, glad they just decided to have Jr. in his adult form the whole time LOL Also, Joey, Yusuke doesn't transform until the tournament in the demon realm. he transformed due to the fact of being in close proximity to his ancestor if I remember correctly. The Togoro fight happened and ended pretty much like it did in the manga/anime.

What didn't make sense for me was when Genkai told Toguro that he atoned enough. When exactly did he do that? Cause remorse is different from atonement. Atonement requires action.

Never watched yuyu hakusho Where should I start? Netflix? Manga? Anime? Is it a good idea to finish dark tournament and gtfo ? Is it worth watching or reading it all?

I just don't know why they had to cram the Dark Tournament stuff into this 1st season! Like, did they expect that this is gonna be a 1 and done season and so they wanted to do those fights? But if they do get a 2nd season, then what? They CAN NOT do Dark Torunament proper now that they killed...basically half of the characters that made that ark interesting. Or are they gonna try and do it, but with Sensui in place of Sakyo? Like he's gonna use the tourny as a way to try and reopen the gate since Sakyo failed here?

Not even the Buddha expects him to save the kid XD, you know, the one who is one of the universes and knows (not predict) past, present, and future, the one that stuck Songoku under a mountain? And one funny thing that it skipped is that the kid would have survived either way. But the long-haired one that you mention.... it happens after the tournament art, so hopping for that is weird XD (yes I beat the vs game and that point was mention again and again, since Keiko keep asking about the hair and after that, they marry :) )

I don’t have Netflix, so i am unable to watch it along with other shows and movies I wanna see. But i have seen the anime when it aired in America back in the late 90’s early 2000’s. My favorite arch would be the fight with 4 cardinal gods (I don’t remember what the arch is actually called) with Genbu, Byakku, Seiryuu, and Suzaku. I only say that, cuz before i saw Yu Yu Hakusho, I watched Fushigi Yuugi on VHS back in the late 90’s with a then close friend. So i liked that arch cuz it reminded me of Fushigi Yuugi. 🤣🤣🤣

Genkai dying off screen is one of the top 10 Anime Betrayals of all time.

That mazoku transformation doesn’t happen until the Sensui fight, MANY chapters later.

I grew up knowing the anime series as "Ghost Fighter". They also have English names while dubbed in Filipino. So it's kinda weird when the real names and original title came up for the live action one. Still, I want to watch it on Netflix and excited to see it without expectations. 😁

I thought it was a fun watch, and I really like how the cast played the main characters. I was definitely bummed that it was only five episodes (which I had no idea when I started the series). And yes, the tournament arc is so memorable and so iconic to the series, I was really excited to see it live! But I was confused that it was happening simultaneously…and it was all done so quickly??? Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I swear that Botan also had a fight during that arc? That said, I do want to see if they’ll make more seasons because I remember watching the original anime with my brothers when we were little, so I have a fond nostalgia for the series💖

spoiler-ish question: am i remembering incorrectly that Yusuke's hair grew long because his father possessed him during sensui fight? i remember the toguro fight as yusuke slowly assimilating the power genkai gave him while toguro is goin "this is just my 50% power" then "isang daang pursyento ng aking kapangyarihan!!!"

This was the first series of books I got into. Before, I hadn’t read all that much. I would love to see the franchise come to life in an adaptation.

I enjoyed your review of the live action and agree! It's not the best one out there - that's still Rurouni Kenshin for me - but it did pretty damn well with the time given and the meshing of story. I enjoyed the desperation of the fights by breaking them up like that and I enjoyed the bonding with Keiko and Yukina. Sakyo's domination as the main villain here was pretty epic - I loved seeing more of him here and his gambling den was both sick and creepy as hell! Also, Elder Toguro was brilliantly terrifying! I also was completely riveted in how they organized the preliminary fights with possessed kid and Gouki. Yes, this was different, but it was still gritty, dangerous, and made me root for my boys just as much as the anime (while wanting to get more of the villains). xD

A question I've always been kinda curious about, seeing the thumbnail - does the caption "Does it suck?" foster more engagement than the caption "Is it good?"

Botan is called a Ferry Girl in the English adaptation and Yusuke is called a Spirit Detective. I really loved Heie's Black Dragon Wave. Would love to know if we get Fox Kurama.

One thing that really stood out to me was that I felt they really captured the retro Japan vibe, kinda like how stranger things did it. I loved it, and I felt like the folks in charge really understood and respected the source material. There was a lot that I wished made it in, but I hope it does well enough to get more cause I want more. Also funny that you mentioned the Parasyte live actually cause I was looking at the YYH live action and thinking MAN I'd love it Parasyte was done by this team.

There were definitely some parts of the live action that could have been better, and Toguro really deserved more character depth. But all in all, not bad at all for a Netflix adaptation.

My guy, Yuusuke didn't transform vs Toguro. He did that vs Sensui in the next arc. Vs Toguro all he had was a (still cool) friendship power up because of Kuwabara being "killed" by Toguro.

It was better than I expected! The acting was good and choreography was cool! But the story…it felt like they put the original material into a blender, mixed it, and that’s what I drank 😂 all mixed and some of the juice still left in the blender 😂
