    I am gigging with it for years now. Using it with the HX FX with the 4 cable method and the Bluguitar MIDI adapter. I am controlling the amp completely with MIDI, even gain levels within the presets. Works absolutely reliable and sounds fantastic....I am using the clean and the classic channel most of the time. The HX FX and the Amp1 have a perfect form factor to sit on one pedal board. Bluguitar offers two small magnets for fixing the Amp1 on a pedal board. Which is very practical if you want to use it without the HX FX from time to time.....When I travel with the amp, I can store it easily in any hotel safe.....

    I’m doing essentially the same thing with Helix LT in 4 cable method with Amp 1 Iridium and controlling the Amp1 through midi using the Midi 1 adapter. Using Two Notes CAB M+ from Record out to the board ( disabling the on board cab sim). Love the sound from the Amp 1. Best sound I’ve ever had, bought it used for 800 CAD.

    In stead of using the recording out to FOH you can consider using the BluGuitar BluBox: it's got IR's of many vintage Cabs with a balanced xlr out for FOH and a 'through' jack for connecting a real cab (if you want) for your stage sound. A very versatile piece of gear!

    I love my Iridium, no one control needed for me. Classic channel, all set to 5-ish, sounds like a great Jcm 800. I have a small board with mini tuner, SD1 and a mini wah. I run a long cable to Amp1 that sits on top of 4x12. I do have a Blu box as well that sounds great, but the out to FOH is good enough for the drunk people at my shows. I love the simplicity and ease of tones and setup. I constantly get asked what amp I’m using.

    If you get the MIDI1 adapter from Bluguitar, then you can control the Amp1 via MIDI from the HXFX and you don't need the Remote 1. Also, if you really have just the 3 main amp options that you described you can program the Amp1 directly in preset mode (see the manual) again without need for the Remote 1 or MIDI. (I have nothing against the Remote 1, just pointing out that you can gig with just the HXFX and the Amp1). The later Iridium Amp1 (voiced for heavier more metal tones) has an option to disengage the cab sim on the Rec Out so you can apply your own. It doesn't provide an option to load in your own IRs. The only issue I've encountered is a player fault where I held my foot on the boost button for too long in a gig. This put the Amp1 into 'listen mode' for programming via MIDI. So when I selected my next preset on my MS3 controller I didn't get the sound I expected. Something you do once only....

    While I have gone silent stage with a Fractal, the Amp1 was what I used for a few year. I had an HX Effects, Amp1, and Thomas's BluBox on a pedaltrain board. It was a very powerful setup. The BluBox completely opens up the possibilities of the Amp1. The built in cabinet of the Amp1 is an IR based on Thomas's Marshall 4x12. That's fine if you like that specific cabinet. I much preferred the Fender-ish 2x12 setting on the BluBox with the Amp1...and I could tweak the virtual mic position on the BluBox to adjust the EQ as needed.

    I sent the Amp 1 back 1st time I tried it using the record out - the one you sent to front of house. I tried again with Thomas's BluBox speaker sim and to my ears (50 years plus a pro!) it just brought it to life. I use it through QSC's and blueBox is great. Through a guitar speaker not so important I guess. Had communication with Thomas, who wasn't trying to sell me one, just helping me to get an IR box I already had to work. It didn't so I got the BlueBox and it did it for me. I would just like a bit more control over the boost volume btw. Whaddya gonna do. I use Nobells and a Bluesdriver and works for me as a pedal platform. Good bit of gear, like everything you have to work with it, even if it is simple.

    I don’t gig at all, but I used my Iridium with my Hx Stomp going 4CM, programmed my presets with the MIDI adapter, and monitored it with my 1x12 cab, used the BluBox to go FOH. I really loved the tones I got… it’s very easy to program with the MIDI learning feature. The BluBox is also a breeze to use, very simple and the giant tone knob (mic placement) makes it so versatile and simple to adjust on the fly. As a Metal guy I mostly use the Mesa V30 and the Marshall G12H75

    1. I would have liked to be able to switch the cab simulation on and off via MIDI so I could use the HX IRs without conflict. 2. The Eq is really for the room. I set mine at 555 and then change it to taste on-site. Other eq I do from the HXFX. 3. As @spharr says above, the Remote is redundant if you use midi from the HXFX. Any preset or snapshot can completely change the Amp1’s channel, volume, gain, boost and reverb. That’s loads of flexilibility.

    I gig it often since the 1st version. Now I use the Mercury edition in Low Gain mode (as I would never use the bright cap in an old Fender amp) and it's even better for my needs. In the Mercury edition the shared EQ is no longer a problem for me. In the Silver edition it was always a bit of a compromise. When drive channels set to my liking the Clean was too bright so I had to lower the Treble and Mids controls. No need for that in the Mercury. The Vintage and Classic Channels beat plenty of all tube amps. Amp 1 is one of the smartest pieces of gear I've used. Thanks for Your videos!

    Enjoyed your gig playing here. Do more of that on your channel :). Now what I suggest you do is to use your TONEX to build tone models you want and then run it into the FX Return of the Amp1 and use it as a power amp live. You'll want another 10 band or parametric EQ pedal between to help adjust to rooms because you won't be able to use the onboard Amp1 EQ since you are bypassing it.

  • @Guitarman007
    @Guitarman007Ай бұрын

    What would I change? Several things. I think the EQ should have be saved/modifiable per channel as presets. I think the tiny crappy pots on the side should have been mini pots on the front. I think there should have been option to chose to run the EQ pre/post preamp vs FX loop, and the MIDI should have been a separate standard midi input either 5 pin or mini, but otherwise yes a phenomenal invention otherwise.

  • @BluGuitar

    @BluGuitar

    Ай бұрын

    I hear you! You get poweramp reaction with AMP1 on the recording out as the recording out gets it’s signal from the speaker out. Mind that AMP1 can create even poweramp saturation without a speaker connected. To get the real deal speaker feel experience: a speaker should be used at tge same time, then the speaker impedance curve reacts with the “current feedback design” of AMP1’s poweramp stage. Just like a traditional tubeamp….

    @@vmx23 Nah, studio work is different. People generally want a guitar player to come and write parts under direction. Reading will most likely be chord charts if it’s involved at all. Not many people making records know how to write music, so the odds of you being presented with a score on a session are pretty low. Film scores are probably the most likely. Generally it’s about having a big enough bag of tricks to be able to pull suitable parts from and play with feel.

    Ай бұрын

    It can do with the remote 1, or the new small one control thing. Instead of the second master volume you can use the power soak button and dial down the wattage. To be honest though, unless you want a sound that is softer and mushier like your power section is clipping then it's best just to turn the amp down but run it at its normal 100 watt. It's not like having a full tube amp that doesn't like running low, it's more like just turning the sound down on your stereo. I run it at the full 100 watts through a cab at home and can easily run it at taking volume

  • @BluGuitar

    @BluGuitar

    Ай бұрын

    Powerscaling is possible*, but not needed. The vintage channel eg uses power sagging like a cranked tube amp. *there’s the internal half power mode. With external controller like Remote 1, 1Control or via Midi the power is scalable from 100 watts continuously to 7 watts without any sacrifice in tone. And from 2watts down to 0,150watts for home/bedroom (with a little dampening similar to a powersoak with an ok reactive load). Greetings, Thomas Blug

  • @icarusi

    Needs more tonal control of the upper mids, without affecting the top end. That goes for most recent amps. As they've been generally voiced brighter, if you try and tone down the top end, you get a muddy sound, as the top end tone controls wipe out the upper mids too. Alternatively have a mids voicing switch, so you can adjust where the mid control operates. I use a Hartke HD75 for extended range guitars. It has a 3 band eq and 6 band graphic. The 3 bands are under and over the graphic, with one between the 6 bands. It was the first amp I found which produced the full tonal range of an 8 string without bi-amping.

    Unless I missed it, I'm surprised you haven't had a go with the Marshall Origin 50? Blug was after a Marshall tone IIRC; and went further with the Mercury and Iridium, I stopped waiting for the Amp X, but if you want portable Marshall tones on a budget, the Origin is worth a look IMO. I have both the Origin 50 combo and head, and for the money I'm extremely impressed; guessing they're even cheaper in the UK; the range of tones, the power scaling, responsive to player nuances, and cleans up with guitar volume, etc. all work great. The only thing I don't use is the amp boost as it loses definition in the high end (i.e., adds muddiness) IMO. I've owned many Marshalls over the years, and still have a 1959HW and JVM410H (haters gonna hate, these open up if you get the master at 2 o'clock or higher) and the Origin isn't far out of the league especially considering the price.

    Totalt agree, lots of hate for the origin, but it does the job perfectly! It is not a high gain amp and the boost is a bit useless, and it has no reverb but stick a p90 guitar in it and u instantly get the sound! Wish they Will make a 50w 2X12 combo or a 100w head, with reverb and Di that is either really good or just a line out so u can add ir’s! Fender bassbreakers are a good allternative also in that anything else then a Blues Deville market! :)

I might use it in the loop of my EHX Superego, you gotta transform those "frozen sounds"... So I also have a chorus and the Whammy DTS in this loop. So when I freeze a chord, I can change it through 2 Whammy... And keep playing over it. Those are my thoughts right now.

    I have a question for everyone here that uses one of these with the line 6 HX effects, or stomp, etc.… I tried an HX effects with mine, but there was a strange digital feedback/interference with it. It was constant quiet and in the background, but constant. I wasn’t able to use it. Anyone have this experience or suggestions on what it may be and how to fix it?

    there´s an issue with hx effects from a certain year of manufacture. I had that problem with one that i bought used. That problem got fixed by line6 in a later release. I then bought a new hx fx and no noise whatsoever. It´s a hardware problem, not software.

    I must have got a dud! The amp has let me down twice at important gigs by shutting down - went to adjust master volume, suddenly no sound - ouch! Took it back to where I bought it from but out of warranty by then so they couldn't help. Believe it's a heat issue ( thermal shutdown?) as it worked fine when I got it home... unlikely to use at gigs again as twice bitten...Pity cause it sounds great when it works.

    I had 2 of them die on me. Both would shut down randomly then both eventually went up in a puff of smoke. Several others had the same issue with them shutting off on The Gear Page. There must have been a bad batch produced.

    Not a comment, so much as a question, which is I wonder how this might compare with the Friedman IR-X used as a tube preamp, with a good Class D amp as the power amp? Just asking since you have good experience with the Friedman IR-X, which I thought sounded really special. And a class D amp with that combine with the Friedman to put the pair in a similar price ballpark (Seymour Duncan Power Stage, Palmer Macht etc...). Albeit with the faff-factor of two boxes. Though the Friedman could fit on big enough pedal board, as could the SD Power Stage.

    @@tonystartup3817 Good idea. I mean, no doubt there's different qualities of implementation of Class D power amps too. And no doubt Amp1 is a very well designed. But, for Power Amp only, there are some other good options (even Bass amps, which have had great super high power Class D Power Amps for a long time, Thunderfunk, Aguilar, and the recent Ampegs - like the Venture series all sound great. Sometimes going massively overpower is a great way of getting super clean power amp. Tube Power Amp modelling, with sag etc, is an area pedal / amp designers need to explore next.

    I'll confess I don't really understand these devices. Is it similar to the Laney Lionheart and Ironheart units? For a live gig, if it goes to the desk only, and then you hear the sound through your monitor, I assume that'll save on carrying gear (an idea I like). But could that be done with a Tech 21 Fly Rig, just the same? If you do have to take a speaker cab, then why not just take a combo to the gig. Like I say, I don't really understand them.

  • @BluGuitar

    The idea is: think of it as a full multichannel head in a stomp format. EG replaced many Marshall JVM410… As a pedal it is easy to put on a pedalboard too. All cabling get easier and shorter. You can drive a cab and go direct at the same time-or just use 1 out-whatever you need. Having full 100 watts power and sounding exactly the same on any power outlet on this planet it became the choice for many touring professional players… But hey, if you like your good old combo: that’s also great!

    I think it was actually in the first edition of the Amp1, NOT the Iridium and Mercury versions, where the manual said not to use the recording out and powered out at the same time, as I can’t find a reference to it in the current manual. However, I did see that at least one other person commented on one of Thomas’ original videos asking for clarification, as he himself was using both outputs in that demo vid. Sorry for any confusion! Sounded great at your gig. Cheers

    I have a question… I saw the schematics and I think that the reverb is before the fx loop… which means than if you put a delay in the loop, you will delay the reverb.. isn’t it a non sense for you?

  • @tonystartup3817

    @tonystartup3817

    Hmm, not sure. Certainly reverb doesn't seem to apply when coming back in to the FX return - when using the amp 1 as a power section for a preamp pedal so I guess the reverb has already been added at this stage. I've never had a problem with running a delay in the FX loop though, sounds good to me, and Thomas uses a delay in the loop a lot too. How does it work with a normal amp that has reverb? Isn't it exactly the same? Pretty sure my combo amps that have reverb on board have it in the preamp section

    I think it sounds very unnatural for what it proclaims to be. The Friedman IRX and IRD are far better options, that sound like tubes should, even though it’s “unpowered”. Nothing a Seymour Duncan Powerstage can’t rectify.

    I've used John's IRX into the return of the amp 1 so I can use it's power stage to power a cab. It was cool, it worked well, but I didn't think any of the sounds that you could get were really much different than you could get just using the amp 1 by itself. Maybe I should suggest John giving it a go whilst he has both of them himself

    I’ve had the Amp1 for a bit. Even purchased it twice but I kept selling it. For a few reasons. 1. Although it sounds awesome, I don’t think it’s well suited for today’s modern player. No single DI output or ability to load cab sims. 2. The design layout is a little weird. Those little switches on the side are a pain to deal with. Rather have a master presence 3. Although it can be controlled far beyond whats offered as a stand alone, I’m turned off by having to buy all these exclusive items to make it work. Proprietary midi cable? Magnetic locks? A huge controller? A DI/Cab Sim box? Most of those things are built and designed into most products today, felt like I’m already paying over $800 for an unfinished product if that makes sense. 4. Then of course there’s no availability of those add ins in the US For these reasons, I think this product hasn’t taken off. It’s just not as practical. I know Blackstar also make an Amp1 clone and it generally does the same thing but a bit better designed in my opinion.
