@@GalinaEv The whole idea of 'the city services acting like trying to put together accommodations for the fire people to be able to live safely is a burden they'd rather not have to deal with' COULD have worked. In real life there are laws that (On paper) are meant to make cities more accessible for disabled people so they can get around better and live their lives more easily, but building accommodations and designing cities that way costs more money and so many cities will try their best to get away with skimping out on them as much as possible. (For example, there should be more public benches and places to sit for people who can't walk far but most cities would rather not invest in that kind of stuff.) If the movie had leaned more into that idea of calling out public services for not doing more to make cities more accessible to those who need special accommodations, I could see that working much better. But the idea that city services are not doing their jobs properly and that Elemental city is not built with consideration for fire people doesn't go anywhere. If anything it's almost framed as "cute" the lengths that the fire people have to go all on their own in order to traverse across town safely. They have to bring umbrellas everywhere because the city planners don't care that water is always getting splashed everywhere. City services should be the villains of this story.

I do agree that the narration in the flashback scenes does lessen their impact, and that the relationship between Wade and Ember's father is underdeveloped, as is the final resolution where the latter approves of the relationship. I will disagree that Wade is uninteresting. His regrets pertaining to the death of his father as well as his drive and empathy make him a very likable person in my opinion.

  • @sketchycat6223

Wish we’d seen more of his dads death impact on him though. He says ember brightened his life but he seems equally chipper throughout the movie even before meeting her? Maybe they should’ve shown him being a little more dreary or depressed before meeting ember. Or even hints from his family or friends that she helped him heal and grieve more

  • @andrewwang8021

    @andrewwang8021

    8 ай бұрын

@@sketchycat6223 I definitely agree that the impact of his father's death should have been given a flashback scene or something that conveyed its effects without being told about them directly (though I do like how Wade uses a Fire cultural expression to further elaborate on his feelings about his dad). I feel that the more definitive change Ember brings about in Wade is his level of agency. He initially seems content enforcing the law despite Ember's pleas, and is only compelled to act when Ember moves him with her explanation about her father's efforts to keep their business afloat. Throughout Ember and Wade's efforts to fix the flooding problem, the latter is mostly brought along for the ride by Ember, such as when she directly confronts Wade's boss while he offers her his support, and he often lets her take the initiative with the repair job. However, as their relationship further develops, Wade not only begins to actively pursue Ember, he also pushes her to explore her glassworking talent and personal desires. To me at least, Wade's personal development has less to do with the grief of his father's passing, since a strength of his character is shown to be his ability to empathize and express himself emotionally. I think the intended character arc is instead about him learning to become a more proactive person, someone who will actively shape his own future and go against the flow to do so, instead of a passive individual who is afraid to stand up to forces greater than him. Figuratively, I find it rather fitting for a person made out of water.

I think it's more that they could have conveyed the importance of it with less narration, like instead of explaining "I turned to bow and he didn't bow back," they could say something like "when we left, I said goodbye but..." and trail off and have the mom or ember finish it off with "but they didn't bow back?" Or something on his face that conveys that things didn't work out the way they were supposed to. It seems like this movie just has an issue with telling instead of showing with expressions or setting. I feel like there are too many adults expecting complicated and/or dark stories. At the end of the day it IS a complicated movie, not just for adults but also children. There may be children and adults that these messages aren't 'common sense', this film can appeal to both. Adults are used to true heartbreak from media, kids simply can't handle it. They don't distinguish fiction from reality like adults. I think like a lot of the critisim on new Pixar films are from kids who have grown up and thus expect more.

@@M_k-zi3tn It also depends on the experience you have before going into the movie, like how I've heard Elemental resonates with a lot of people from immigrant families. When I was younger, and to this day as an adult, Up bored the absolute hell out of me. The story was good but in my eyes it was just an old man and some kid walking around, with some good tension and action sprinkled in at times. Otherwise kid me would have rather watched Incredibles or smn like Kung Fu Panda. I feel like Elemental is on that same wavelength, only I personally found the experience more enjoyable.. but even then it's like comparing apples to oranges just because they're both fruits. Even the love story subverts expectations by making Wade an openly emotional, expressive, and reliable male lead. It's refreshing asf to see the roles flip in that sense, whilst also depicting a healthy dynamic and caring love story. Some people like that, some people don't, but it's all up to presence.

I'm not an immigrant, but I live in a country in which you're always told to leave if you want a better chance at life, and as someone that wants to pursue art, I fear that I may have to end up doing so like Ember. I deeply connected with her bc of her personality, similar struggles relating to my parents and such. Most of these reviews complain about it "spelling things out" while they seem to need to get the inner struggles of the characters spelled out to them. I don't want to imply that people must always directly relate to the protagonists to enjoy the media they're in, but the messages and representation found in the movie really seem to go over the head of people that just can't relate, and it's a bit hurtful to have the entirety of such an accurate portrayal of these situations dismissed by these people because of it. A guy who tries to do good by others and just wants to understand, not a toxic drop in his bucket, I really don't understand why that translates to "boring" for some people. I think the immigrant aspect of the story falls flat due to the implications of this specific universe. In real life, hate towards people of different race largely comes from stereotypes, ignorance and lack of knowledge. In here however, fearing other elements and not wanting to be around them feels kind of warranted? I mean, fire REALLY DOES evaporate water. It REALLY DOES burn things. And the other way around aswell - water DOES put out fire. It's not a misconception, even this specific movie showcases it. It's not really unfair for the earth elementals to fear fire when the movie clearly shows us that fire people can burn them down. I feel like the story would work much better if the narrative presented that, for example, fire people are treated unfairly and actually pose no danger to others. But the movie doesn't do that at all, instead showing many examples of fire people actually being dangerous to others (like Ember's mother setting the doorbell on fire, Ember blowing up and burning Fern Grouchwood etc). The racial implications of this are just really tone deaf.

In real life, racism is based on stereotypes that are true in few cases. People take the bad instances and apply them to everyone of that race. In Elemental, this is what happens but intensified. Every racist thinks their hate is warranted because someone of another race hurt them or someone of their race at some point. It's not true that everyone is harmless because people can harm each other. With racism, racists just attribute harm to others only. We can also help each other and learn and build a better world together. Same as the elements in the movie.

@@thirdeye9698 True, there are, in my opinion, issues with consistency here. They can touch each other, but fire still burns things. Like the Fern Grouchwood scene I mentioned. Water is one thing, but buildings and the nature/tree folk is a whole other can of worms. Also in that scene where Clod gives Ember a flower, she burns it, so not sure what you mean by that.

@marchosiasu9700 the Earth people are earth, not plants. Based on Clod and Fern, it looks like their "hair" grows back pretty quickly since Clod grew flowers on demand basocally and Fern had all of his hair and mustache back by the end of the movie. In the real world forests can grow back better after a fire. There are wildflowers and trees whose seeds are only able to sprout after a fire. Wildfires are part of a natural cycle. We humans just messed it up with our meddling. There are also rocks and minerals that form with heat. It would have been cool if the earth guy on the train had been seen later with bigger, better plants growing than just the grass that got burned. Misconceptions and fear keep people apart. Reaching out and learning about each other can lead to new discoveries.

There were many objects the fire people held, that didn’t burnt off because they were in control of their fire. Also earth people aren’t really affect by fire. Because the rock and earth itself is them, the plants that come out of them are just hair. That’s why the fern grouchwood guy wasn’t screaming his mind off from just being burnt. To them, fire is nothing more than an inconvenience.

I lit talked to a Disney executive the other day in a bar. He was crowing that Disney screwed over the writers/actors by claiming that they got rid of "AI", but in reality they just call it "machine learning" now. He said that "machine learning" will now produce scripts by recycling the story beats of old Disney IP. I mean, that's pretty telling. But audiences are getting sick of the redundancy. Elemental is more proof of this. While there are some cliches, I'm glad that an original story is doing well at the box office.

I really respect your opinion ,and I like how you expressed yourself in general (I do agree on some of your points). However, as a genuine fan of the film ,and without trying to sound rude, I think you need to give this movie another chance and watch it with a different perspective. The movie shows constantly how they’re falling in love and how their relationship works, in both direct and subtle ways. To put it in a romantic way, he falls in love with her light and she falls in love how she shines through him. They do show signs of attraction before and during the hot air balloon scene ,and they don't fall in love in that moment. The movie, like you said, shows more the tension they have. The “tester” scene isn’t the only moment they show they’re a couple. He says in other moments how she is special and inspiring to him and how he wants to be with her. She sees herself reflected on him (literally) a couple of times, as an allegory of a mirror, because that’s his main role in their relationship for her to appreciate herself more and know herself better. The moment at the beach where they’re watching the sunset and the sun touches the sea (fire touches water) is an allegory of their relationship. The movie shows a couple of moments where water people mistreat the father and his wife just because of their element. That's why he hates water. You’re right, we never see how the dad stops hating on Wade ,but in reality it’s because he never hated him, he just hate the version he thought of how Wade was. After seeing how he sacrificed himself for his daughter and the blue flame and how her daughter expressed about him, he understood everything. I understand you wanted a different approach to solve this issue ,but I see it as how sometimes that’s how it happens in real life. You show the people that don’t like you, yet they don’t really know you how you are through your actions. To me, they didn’t “skip” anything. There just wasn't the need of a talk. I even think Clod is necessary because it helps us to see that side of Ember (looking for a partner side and her relationship with other elements and the rest of the city in general) before the conflict starts, even if it is with the comic relief character. As for the plot point of Ember discovering her real dream, to me it works because the focus isn’t in what the real dream is, the focus is Ember realizing her dream isn’t her family's store and the guilt she has for that. Who knows if she's going to end up doing glass work. What matters is that she discovers she wants to try that and be out there ,but how she fears how those things will disappoint her dad. And how she didn’t know that before? She never doubted her supposed dream, until Wade comes to her life and changes her perspective. I know I probably won't change your opinion on this movie (heck, I don't know if you’re going to read this 😅). I just wanted to share my thoughts here, because like you, I care about this film and about Pixar (and because I have nothing better to do 😃). I know I am in the minority but I consider this film to be one of the best from the studio. I hope with time more people watch it and appreciate it ❤

Wonderfully written! After I myself watched it, I was surprised by how decent it was, despite what was said about it. And when the video was talking about how Ember got stressed out by "small" things: bruh, I worked with customers and I got worked up alongside Ember at her customers xD. I was very pleasantly surprised by how Ember's and Wade's relationship developed. It didn't feel forced, and you can see many moments when they admired each other and heard each other. Yes, it was wrong of Wade to still deliver the audit of her dad's shop, but he was very sympathetic towards her and tried his best to help her keep the business open. And when the video was saying how the scene of Ember's parents leaving their hometown is not 'making a connection with audience' and 'is lame' -> DUDE. I come from a family that also had to leave everything behind them, and also without 100% approval from their own parents. Lo and behold, I as part of an audience made a conncetion! Arrrrrgh, semi frustrated at many videos like these.

This is a thoughtful breakdown that enhances my appreciation for Elemental all the more. And my comment is even longer than yours, so don't worry. I'm obsessed too. If you read this, OMG ಥ_ಥ I'm with you on everything you said. Elemental DOES have good themes and "show don't tell" moments, but TELLING is the point! "Say how you feel" is the whole lesson, so idek how Nick has a problem with the exposition the characters give. If not for Wade explaining why he tried to shut down her shop, and Ember explaining why she tried to stop him, they wouldn't even have decided to help each other, much less hang out. When Cinder explains why they left their homeland, when Bernie explains how important being accepted is to him thanks to his shitty father? This is HUGE info for Ember and it makes her feel that much guiltier for even thinking about disregarding all her father's hard work when she should have been ready to take over years ago, just to chase a dream making glass in a faraway city, with a rich kid water guy. It's why she blows up so hard after they touch. Even the love test scene is meaningful; in fact, this scene is there to SHOW not TELL something. And it's not whether or not they're in love, which can be GATHERED. When he lifts up his shirt and stands in front of her, he's reflecting her light onto the incense. "Wade reflects Ember's light" is the recurring motif between them that completely sums up their dynamic, on full display for Ember's mom to see. Wade is a catalyst through which Ember's inner fire, the light inside her that he loves, can shine. It happens the first time on the train in the dark. The back of his watery head mirrors her own fiery face back at her when she catches up to him. This is unusual to her. At City Hall when he sends the tickets to processing, as she pleads in earnest, her light shines through him into the room, and in awe he turns around. And on the beach as she admits her turmoil and starts withering away, she's still brightly reflecting off of him. What to Ember is a weak moment, is to Wade a display of true emotion that he finds beautiful. The glass she makes that night also reflects her light back at herself, as her art pieces are representations of her inner self. And it happens when they play the crying game and Wade pretty much tells her he wants to be with her. And again when he's freaking dying, and she says that she loves him... Also am I wrong, does the water leaking and the broken doors represent their emotions? Wade cries a flood at the drop of a hat, he just leaks into people's lives, pours his heart out, and connects with them by being emotionally honest. Ember is unable to do this, sealing everything behind neglected doors and denying how she feels, with herself, with Wade, with her dad. So she finds it hard to connect. But the way they FIX the doors TOGETHER is symbolic of their relationship. She used to explode in anger under pressure, while her true emotions-- resentment over her burden, guilt over her parents' hard work going to waste, worry over losing their approval-- were unknown even to her. But the sandbags she put up in her mind were swept away by a wave of Wade's unconditional love and support, and he kept trying to break down her doors to show her what was inside herself. The glowing glass door she makes to fix the second leak shines in the sun as the water rushes behind it. It is indicative of the renewed expressiveness she's felt since being with Wade, how all he needs to do is be there with her, and love her, and her beautiful inner self comes out. But even tempered glass can't withstand the strain she's under. Wade knows this and shows up at her ceremony to stop her from having to reluctantly live a life she doesn't want. He kinda destroys everything Ember was trying to hold in place by just saying out loud how they both feel about each other. And the dam breaks again and a flood rushes in. And Wade is more than happy to sacrifice himself for her in that room, just like how her own parents sacrificed everything for the chance to give her, before she had even been BORN, a better life; just like how she was sacrificing her own happiness for them. I think the flood was not a "setpiece", it was warranted, not only within the context of a water-centric city that is unaccommodating to fire, but thematically. It circles back to the last disaster Ember's parents experienced, when they lost all but a sliver of the Blue Flame the first time; the elements ( ಠ‿

Once they know their backstory they realize the couple is actually Clod’s parents and they are trying to find Clod, who was taken far away as a baby by a relative or someone in order to escape the abusive relationship. Realizing this, Wade and Ember decided to make sure they never met Clod again.

Maybe it had a lot to do with me watching this with my wife- but that opening scene where they imply they had to deliver Ember by themselves- in a new world where they would not have been able to find help- Made me get v emotional. 6:30 Also- I really didn't mind clod. He was fun to watch, and tbh reminded me a bit of myself. He really didn't have a lot of screen time, but It was cute seeing his innocent crush on Ember, and him seemingly not caring/noticing that they are different Elements. The end where he ends up rushing over the fire girl his age made me chuckle- little guy has a type it seems lol. I know there's probably people who took offense to that- I say it's a very easy way to get across that the new gen of elements in this city are more and more open-minded. Wade being the crybaby felt like a personal attack. I was bawling in that theatre every 10 minutes lmao-- It's certainly not the BEST Pixar movie. Far from top 5. But it's nowhere near the studio's worst, so I really hope people give it the chance. I kinda liked seeing Pixar do a romance centered film. The story definitely will resonate more with some than others. I'll admit that If you're either single or not an immigrant/ married to one, this movie might not hit as close to home. But if the very least you like looking at good animation, this is a okay movie to check out

Just because a lot of people don’t like the movie doesn’t mean it’s only because it’s under the Disney brand. People are just more picky about the stuff they want to watch, especially with movie prices rising. So when a person goes to a movie, pays $40 on tickets and food, just to find the movie wasn’t worth it to them, leads to mass disappointment. It’s okay if you liked the movie, but you can’t expect everyone else to have the same opinion. Even if a lot of people don’t like the movie, it’s not because it’s overhated, it’s because the majority simply hold the opinion that the movie wasn’t good. I, myself, was originally not interested in the movie because of the animation style. With all the other animated movies having a more interesting art style, like Mutant Mayhem and ATSV, I was more inclined to watch their movies because it didn’t seem generic. Both Elemental and Teenage Kraken were movies I had no desire to see simply because of how it was presented, leading me to retract to the previous point about people being more picky where they spend their time. I feel like if Disney took more risks and diversified their animation a little bit more, they’d gain some of their popularity back or at least bring a larger initial audience. But we’re in a new age and with people seeing that Elemental cost more than ATSV and Mutant Mayhem combined, while still maintaining graphics that we’ve basically seen from previous years and doing nothing interesting, they’re not gonna bother seeing it. And if they do, you can’t stop them from being upset their expectants weren’t met. Good animation and good story matter. This is why we’re having strike in the industry as we speak.

I feel like a lot of people just misunderstand the movie, and your point about not even realizing that they liked each other and that it came out of nowhere is surprising to me. When my friends and I watched the movie ( we are all in our late twenties, almost 30 ) it was so apparent to us that there's interest. Wade is a very caring and emotional guy and he was touched by Ember's story and how much she cared about the shop and her family, and her relationship with her father resonated with him and we learn that later on in the movie. Their chemistry and romance was done so authentically and organically, which I don't see all that often and it's interesting to me how some people can find it so profound and emotional while others find it bland, boring and out of nowhere. Ember, unlike her dad, seemed to have no prejudice about other elements and we first see her gaining interest in Wade during the airball game, when she sees how easily he gets to connect with other people as he motivates everyone to cheer on for Lutz, we can see Ember being drawn to him in that moment. And it all leads up to the balloon scene, and when she's creating the balloon, and Wade gets to see her creative side, he's so mesmerized with her and he's not afraid to show it, he's very open with his emotions. Now I don't know how after all that, you could still find their chemistry or interest in each other "out of nowhere". PS: We found Clod to be absolutely stupidly hilarious as a character, the kind of young kiddo who you'd roll your eyes with empathy for trying so hard to get a girlfriend / boyfriend because that's what kids think they need to do / get. When it comes to Ember and us not being able to tell that she actually doesn't want to run the shop, that's perfectly fine, why do we have to know that when Ember herself wasn't aware of it until later on. She could never understand her temper until later on and it makes sense, so many of us truly find ourselves or understand something deeper within us way later in life. And lastly Wade isn't uninteresting at all, he's such an endearing character and it was so refreshing to see a male lead be so open with his emotions and feelings.

Agree with most of the negative points you pointed out, but I do think there is subtlety shown regarding Wade and Ember's feelings for each other. Multiple scenes show how they were in awe of what the other was capable of despite their differences. I feel like their love story is quite well-fleshed out and the pacing of the romance worked for me.

The crazy thing is I kind of want Elemental to get a sequel or more content because there are a lot of potential and interesting ideas for the story to continue forward. Which does give me hope for the future of Pixar. I even had an idea for the sequel where both Ember and Wade decide to go back to visit their parents in Element City, but time has changed, and they haven't seen them for so long that they feel a bit disconnected from them and the similar situation can be said for their parent, while they would be a lot more friendly and maybe even visit each other they also a bit distance as well especially with the times changing and society giving them new influences. I even had this idea for the villains of the story first starting off as a typical one-off random couple but as the story goes on Ember and Wade realize how toxic they are to themselves, their own relatives, and others. Once they know their backstory they realize the couple is actually Clod’s parents and they are trying to find Clod, who was taken far away as a baby by a relative or someone in order to escape the abusive relationship. Realizing this, Wade and Ember decided to make sure they never met Clod again.

I actually went to the theater to see it with my boyfriend as a 2nd date,, we only watched it cause we didnt want to Ruby Gillman and nothing was showing for 2 more hours. There were 32 seats in the theater and only 4 other people watching with us. I was sceptical - he didnt care too much but we both ended up liking it. Probably won't pay to watch it again but it was a nice a movie imo. Though i LOVED the part where Wade's mom brings up the glass job thing after seeing her remake the vase(?). She doesnt care about the element difference, or background, she just saw talent and went "you could do something really cool with it if you wanted, lmk". Its so sweet

This was a great movie. For me, it’s a 9/10. 🔥❤️💧 When you mentioned about Wade and Bernie not having a conversation. It’s not about them (they did had there time in the movie). It’s about Amber. When you mentioned that Amber does not have a goal or what she want’s todo. In the movie it’s in development, she’s finding what she enjoys. This movie is great, cute, and clever like any other Pixar film. This is not as great as Wall-E, but I think it’s a little tiny better than Inside Out

I think that the whole purpose of ember not realising she wants to run the shop is supposed to be like how when you grow up or when you go to college, you’re sure that you want to do one thing, but as you study into it more you may find interest in another thing. It comes with growing up. And as she grows she feels like her dad only wanted her to run the shop and wouldn’t support her if she wanted to do something else. Also I think the explaining stuff is quite accurate to immigrant parents. My boyfriend’s dad will often tell him about his past just randomly or in almost any conversation. Not that that’s a bad thing of course.

I liked the love story, very classic rom-com with a twist of being literal elemental beings who happen to be polar opposites of each other. “We come from 2 different worlds,” that sorta thing. I also really loved the obvious cultural appreciation. But honestly what really got me was the soundtrack, it just did such a good job of making you feel like you were in a different world, but one that’s still close to home, very feel-good. I can meditate to this shit. And it went very well with the visuals, the movie is just so colorful and very aesthetically pleasing. The movie is not without its flaws, but I will definitely watch again many more times without getting tired of it.🥰

I think that having no example of Ember not wanting to run the shop besides her temper in the early parts of the movie makes a lot of sense. Having these expectations of her parents on her for her whole life, she literally had no chance to think about what she wanted to do, or even consider the fact that she wants to do anything else in the first place. She's essentially buried her own feelings so deep with responsibility that the moment she's offered the internship is the first time she realizes that she doesn't want to run the shop. There's also the fact that her dad is getting older and more tired, and the only apparent thing to her is to take over his work so he can relax. She wants to run the shop, in a sense, to help her dad, but not for the sake of running a shop.

It sucks how so many people were excited about Elemental after the teaser trailer, and now after the movie came out, so much people hate on it. The movie did what people expected: it showed this beautiful world that was semi-complex and had so much unique parts to it, that showed to us how the elements co-exist. But no, this movie is unpopular because...... failed marketing? Now, I agree this movie did not get a decent marketing, but why on earth would you call a movie boring just based on that?? I come from a family that also had to move countries, also had to leave everything behind and not with their parents approval. They had to leave eveything they loved and felt close to. So when this video was saying that the feelings were 'artificial' or that the characters 'were telling what to feel', I strongly disagree. And anyway, isn't that what half the movies do??? Where its characters encourage the audience what to feel? I find this piece of argument so poor. I also disagree about Wade being boring. Yes, he could be frustrating at many times, escpecially when we were first introduced to him. But we were shown his sympathetic side, and how he was eager to help out Ember with her shop in the duration of the movie. He eagerly introduced her to his family and even went as far to prepare a trip to the flower she always wanted to see. We were shown he was selfless, so selfless in fact that he even was eager to sacrifice himself to save Ember's traditional blue flame. P.S. 13:55 , The reason why the mother was talking about this 'Love Tester', is because it is part of their tradition. This shows that Wade didn't need to be a fire element to partake in their tradition successfully.

I really like the movie, imo wade made ember realize that she didnt like running his dad's shop and encouraging her to tell her father her true feelings, being honest to your love ones, seeing amber feel Trapped, made wade feel "confused" onto why she doesnt follow her own heart and wanted to do whatever SHE wants, wade says "why does ANYONE get to tell you what to do in your life". I know that bernie's father didnt give the bok sou vow, as an asian teenager i know the feeling of "if u dont do what we want you get dissowned", bernie is different; he accepts that his daughter didnt want to run the shop. Overall they overcome troubles together and generally, wade does genuienly help her and make her feelings true, without the hot air balloon scene where wade says "maybe your temper is saying something that you dont want": basically everything wade says made contact on ember's heart. 10/10 imo ❤

I think that’s why I’ve enjoyed all the post 2020 Disney movies because they’re just simple feel good stories. So maybe it’s not like the old Pixar, but for what it is, it’s a magical movie. However, we kind of need to be told the dad's bow story because viewers are not yet aware of this fictional fire culture customs. We would understand that the father is disapproving but, how would one know that he is supposed to bow back? I felt the scene was earned because when I saw Ember bow I knew from the father's story it is a sign of respect and acknowledgment to have the person bow back.
