I'm glad to see that you have a Kemper again. I still have all your old Kemper Profiles from 2019-2020. Keep making profiles John! I have the Kemper Stage, AxeFX III, Helix Stomp and ToneX but still seem to spend most of my time on the Kemper...it just has a "thing" I like!

A great patch on a Kemper sounds better that anything short of a really good tube amp. The real problem is that the patches can be hit or miss. It's not just the "tone", but also how it responds.

You should have a look at what Thomas Dill is doing with Fuzz, Distortion and Drive on the Kemper Tones & Talks KZread channel. I have also enjoyed his use of an old cinema projector amp profiles, makes for interesting tones.

I think what the Kemper started, the Tonex democratized by making it accessible to every player for the price of a stomp box or two.

I know people compare the waveforms and find tonex more “accurate” But I can’t count the amount of times I’ve heard a great tone, to later find out it was a kemper. The couple times I had a chance to play one, felt great in the hands too

I know you had a bad experience with a couple QCs but I have arrived at my favorite experiences using a Revv G50 and either playing it thru a QC for stereo effects or capturing the G50 in the QC so I don’t have to lug it around. The captures feel almost as good as playing thru the amp itself. It’s the best experience I’ve arrived at. Versatile amp with two notes output so I can capture the amp with a cab with a blend of mics. Sounds killer. I wish you had had better luck with Neural. I’ve got a renewed appreciation for the QC and have been playing it more lately than my hx stomp rig or FM9

@John Cordy It looks like your Kemper’s software isn’t up to date? I have never had Rig Manager freeze like that, and could see the section for Liquid Profiling/Tone Stacks. I update the Kemper via USB with Rig Manager open, although I believe that if the software version goes too far back, it’s recommended to use a memory stick, with the latest version, and the KAOS file.

I really don't think so. The IR handling and the display disqualify the device for me. They have a lot of great ideas in there, though - it is really time for Kemper 2.

The display has nothing to do with tone. The Kemper Cabinets are better than any IR. IRs became a big thing because the AxeFX and Helix needed an IR to make them sound better, the Kemper has never needed IRs.

@@Blandifiedso be straightforward you’ll love the high gain fractal amps, they’re a lot better than kemper profiles, BUT you’ll have to dial cleans and low gain a lot more and add compression to match your habits with the kemper cleans which are very compressed (and that’s why people love them) It’s the reason I kept the kemper for one year with the Axefx and finally sold the kemper. Bought the player back last month but it was less convincing that ToneX so I also returned the player 😂

@@Blandified ToneX needs 2 things = - imput trim quite high - searching and finding the right capture or doing them by yourself using advanced mode And you’ll have more fun than with a kemper (mostly because the behavior of the ToneX is really close to the original amp, playing with different pickups, I can ear all the little nuances I did not with the same profiles on the kemper) But ToneX has no effects and the compressor is shit

Top end from a profiled amp is not the same as the amp tone. Had one back in the day. Tim Pierce said the same a few years later on one of his vids.

Unless you've got a garbage Modeler, they all sound pretty much the same, or can be dialed in to sound very close. Blind tests rule. What I don't like about the Kemper is all those buttons and knobs, as each one is a point of failure. How much does a Kemper cost to repair and how long would you be without it if it broke? Reliability and longevity, particularly of any moving parts, is an important consideration. I've had one Boss Modeler that had many Knob/dialing Pots go bad. And one of the main knobs on my HX Stomp is starting to get glitchy. I would not buy a Kemper simply because of that.

@@bonchie1 Pots with detents lose their precision after a while. If I recall right, these types of Pots are typically rated for 8-12k cycles. I use my HX Stomp almost every day for many hours, and I've had it for 3.5 years. At 10 cycles (knob turns) per day, the Pot would be expected to last about 3 years.

@@picksalot1 Just FYI, I don't have a Kemper, but my guess is that it uses rotary encoders, not potentiometers. A popular brand of encoder used in the audio world is Alps, and their standard encoders are rated for 15k to 100k cycles (depending on the model). I think those ratings are conservative, though. My Onkyo receiver uses an Alps encoder for its volume control, and it appears to be one of the 15k or 30k cycle models. I use it many times a day, every day, and it started glitching last year, after 12 years of use (10 adjustments a day would be ~44k cycles in that time). Disassembling and cleaning it gave me another year, but I just ordered a replacement, as it's now glitching again. They are fairly inexpensive parts ($6 for mine). Whether they are easy to replace depends on the device design (alas, it's a bit of a headache for my Onkyo receiver). A device manufacturer with a sizable product run might specify a custom encoder, perhaps with extra-long life. I would be really surprised if Kemper didn't spec parts with at least 10 yr of expected life. If you are a company that wants to last longer than 3 years, you don't spec parts with a 3-year lifetime on an expensive device that is likely to be used for much longer than that. -Tom

@@TLMuse Thanks Tom for the excellent information and insights. My Boss GT6 used Pots specifically designed for them. There was a time that Users could order them directly from Boss at a reasonable price. Then they stopped, and the only way to get them was to bring the Modeler into an Authorized Boss Service Center. When I checked, it was a minimum $100 just to look at the device, then added to that parts and labor, and there was a 3-week or longer wait time. So I stopped buying any Boss/Roland gear. I like to do my own work on my gear, guitars if at all possible. I haven't taken apart the HX Stomp yet, as I need to contact Line 6 first for advice. The knob that's going glitchy on my unit is an Encoder, so given the general specs you provided, its starting to go bad so soon is not a good sign. For those who don''t know "The most obvious difference between rotary potentiometers and encoders is that encoders can spin continuously in either direction, while potentiometers can only turn a set distance clockwise or counter-clockwise before they need to stop." Can someone who has a Kemper verify if they use Encoders, or Potentiometers? Thanks

@@picksalot1 One way to tell is to see if the knobs have an indicator line on them, i.e., if the device uses their absolute position. Most encoders are "incremental"-roughly speaking, they send out clicks of two types that tell the device they have moved a few-degree increment counterclockwise or clockwise. The device has to keep track of the increments to "know" where the knob is (relative to its last known state). A device that uses a ring of LEDs to show the knob position (rather than a marker on the knob) almost surely is using incremental encoders. That's true of the Kemper Head profiler. It's not so clear what's being used for the Kemper Rack. I don't see obvious markers on the knobs in photos, and it looks like the display indicates the knob setting (rather than a ring of LEDs), which strongly suggests use of incremental encoders (and it would be strange for the Head to use encoders and the rack to use pots). There are also absolute encoders that send the device a numerical encoding of the actual position of the knob. Those could have marker on them. But they're less common.

And every day I see guys returning to Kemper, having wasted their money on cheap copies of Kemper’s original design. Yeah, each to their own, I get it, but the original is still miles ahead of the copies, and the closest to the amps they’re profiling. And, if you know what you are doing, you don’t have to purchase a single profile.
