She's a gospel singer and re-arranged it as a "praise song". Meant to inspire and emphasizes supporting a person rather than sympathizing.

She is the best female vocalist at this present day. You are entitled to your opinion but 99% percent of reactors love this version. Only reason I am not gonna dog you out too bad is there are 5 to 10 reactors out of 400 plus Lean On Me reactions by So Hyang said the same thing as you guys did so I will cut you some slack. Still one percent out of 100% makes you guys the odd balls. Well maybe we should have already known because you call your channel Songs and Thongs. Really? How can the viewers take you seriously reacting to their favorite singers. Maybe you guys should stick to singers in the top 40 pop genre that has mediocre singing talent that only puts out studio or MVs versios of their songs because they don't have the guts to sing live like So Hyang and Dimash. By the way, this show that So Hyang was singing on is well known for creative and over the top arrangements of covers which honors the guest of honor in which this episode was for Michael Bolton who covered this song in1993.

Hi~ "The Immortal Songs" program that you`ll see often is not just a cover song, but a competition of various arrangements of each singer. It`s a show program that evaluates singers` abilities and perfection on different themes every week. This week, Miclael Bolton was invited, and his songs were sung. I hope you can meet her many songs, the most loved singer in S.Koaea. Thank you~

This was a Performance Contest in honor of Michael Bolton. Eight of the finest Korean Pop Artists were invite to do one of his greatest hit songs. Sohyang does all of the arrangements, musical, Orchestra & Chorus, for her stage performances, and, in this case, an Award winning design of the Staging and Lighting. Michael called her a musical Virtuoso and invited her to go on an Asian Tour with him. Do not waste everyone's time reacting to any additional Sohyang performances - you won't appreciate those either. Thanks.

She always sings with sincerity whenever and wherever. So it comforts those who listen to her song...That's why I love her...And her singing skills are the best, not to mention... This performance is just tip of iceberg.. . Michael Bolton saw this performance and called it "virtuoso performance" and invited her to his concert in Korea for a duet. and they sung "prayer" & "lean on me" PS. Just FYI the original artist is Bill Withers and the song was released in 1972. Michael Bolton did a cover in 1993. But it is our opinion and it is subjective so people don't have to agree with us here.

Sohyang has said in an interview that this 2014 performance before Michael Bolton was the most pleasing to her personally up to that point in her career because Michael Bolton is one of her absolutely favourite singers, and because he was so effusive in his praise for her she was satisfied that she and her team could produce similarly world class songs and performances. And hey, Michael Bolton told her she was a vocal "virtuoso" after the concert and invited her to join him for the rest of his South Korean tour. How do you beat that? Well, Michael Bolton can offer to take you on an entirely new world tour making you the featured guest--and that is _exactly_ what he did! Unfortunately, or not, the two could not make their schedules match no matter how hard they tried and the tour never materialized. This was actually fairly depressing for Sohyang because she really wanted to go BIG TIME in the music business at that exact moment but everything seemed to conspire against her. Pneumonia problems would crop up and this has been a chronic problem for Sohyang. She would later recognize this as God's way of preventing her from getting caught up in the North American and European music industry that would have been destructive to her character at that time. Sohyang is humble enough and courageous enough to confess she had become so ambitious that she was an ugly person, short tempered with other people and not treating them with proper respect. I know, my jaw hit the floor when I read the interview too! Sohyang a _mean person?_ Say it ain't so! But we all have times where we are embarrassed at how we behaved and Sohyang is just a human being, like the rest of us. Two years later in 2016 Sohyang was almost ready to quit the entire music business because her health problems were so bad. Yet she had given her truly immortal performances of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Arirang Alone," "Everyone" and "I Have Nothing" only the previous year in 2015, and "The Prayer" and "Power Of Love" in 2014--songs _any_ diva who has ever walked the earth would _kill_ to have in their repertoire! So she plundered her bank account and took a trip to New York, Boston and Philadelphia. In the latter city Sohyang saw a quote from President Franklin Roosevelt where he had said in his inaugural address during the Great Depression of the 1930s that "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." This proved so inspirational for her that when she got back to South Korea she entered the "King of the Masked Singers" contest in 2017 and won it on six consecutive occasions! Still the pneumonia dogged her so badly she knew it was God's way of telling her she had to reassess why she had become a singer in the first place. And that was to sing to lift people's spirits who were going through hard times. In 2018 David Foster himself did eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club and it is thought he offered to be the producer for new recordings of her. But she had been really reconsidering her purpose in life and decided the Hollywood lifestyle was the last thing she truly wanted, and in 2020 she turned down a contract offer from Sony Music US, _the 2nd largest music corporation in the world!_ And there were many others before that going back a decade or so! Since then Sohyang has been resolute in her decision to stay away from the music "industry" and manage her own career for the purposes she had started it all with. I for one can't express how happy I am she has chosen the path she did because she is one of the most inspirational people I have ever come across in my entire life, and I know countless others feel exactly the same way. 👌😉💖💖💖 And here is what Michael Bolton told Sohyang after this performance. To say she bowled him over is an understatement! kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJuMxbFxaMbahtY.html

It's all about song interpretation - others find Sohyang's version gives healing and hopes more than the original version, at least for me. No questions about her vocal ability but I guess we just have different taste. A lot of people can't get out of their 'fisrt memories' and prefer karaoke version or tiny bit different from original. And this is a competition, a piano maestro won't play twinkle twinkle little star in its original way. For me her abilities s too good to just sing it in its original version.

Don't feel bad about your opinion. This is not the first time I hear about personal preference on the interpretation of "Lean On Me", and I am sure it won't be the last time either. However, it may help you to put this performance in perspective to know that this program "Immortal Song 2" is a competition show where the production team invited established vocalists to re-interpret the songs for the theme of the episode, not just cover the song. This is Michael Bolton Special and that is why you see him in the attendance as the special guest. For all its tender and comforting ambient of the original arrangement, it is probably not a style one would take into a contest. Sohyang is a phenomenal vocalist and her singing is deeply rooted in her experience as a gospel for over 20 years at the time of this show, as you corrected suggested with your comment. I am however curious about one thing - in the event you never heard the original by Bill Wither, how would your opinion be shaped up?

  • @joandsarah77
    @joandsarah77Ай бұрын

This is a remix, that is the whole point of this show. Popular artists are invited on, pick a song for that nights theme, and rearrange it. If she had just done a cover she would not have won. It's not meant to be the original, think of it as a new song. I would say out of all of her performances this one is the most divided. People tend to either love the remix or dislike it.

(IS2) So same show and yes it is a remix, because that is what this show is about, but it's not as far left field as Lean On me. Or "You Raise me Up" also IS2 "I Will Always Love You" on Begin Again Korea. This is more busking style. Or "I Have Nothing" DMC festival.

Others have already noted that this was a reimagined version of the original song done for a show featuring reimagined versions of classic songs. So I won't go on further about that. I will note that Michael Bolton was impressed enough after watching her performance to ask Sohyang to perform with him. If you want a rendition by her of songs done substantially as originally performed, watch "Power of Love" (various performances), or "Misty" on the Begin Again TV show -- both are excellent, although neither of these really showcase her incredible vocal talents to best effect. If you want songs which are faithful to the original but which show off her vocal abilities better, watch her perform either of two Whitney Houston classics: "I Will Always Love You" from Begin Again or "I've Got Nothing" from I Am Singer Legend. If original classics being reimagined tends to sour your appreciation of the resulting "new" song, you should probably avoid "Bridge Over Troubled Water" and "You Raise Me Up" both (like "Lean On Me") from the Immortal Songs2 TV show -- both are amazing, but you might need to temporarily "unhear" the original to fully appreciate her versions.

You're not gospel fans or I'd recommend astounding "Everyone". She's known for diva covers e.g. Whitney ("I Have Nothing", "I will always love you"), Celine ("Power of Love"), and Mariah; her "Disney" voice (sang Moana in Korean release) used in many songs, and rearrangements of classic songs - her "You raise me up" really elevates song while being consonant with original sensibility. Her "Bridge over troubled waters" is closer to original and popular with other top singers. Personally like more intimate performances such as jazz "Misty" and "I will always love you" as much as the big productions.

This event was in 2015 when the PHENOMENAL So Hyang was 37 years old. Trust and believe, in 2024, her vocal range is still RIDICULOUS, and her breath control remains INSANE. So Hyang is a 46 year old devout Christian and gospel singer from South Korea. In her early 20's and newly married, she was diagnosed with early stage uterine cancer, which left her unable to have children. After being healed by God and her physicians, So Hyang's goal has been to use her voice to bring comfort to people who are experiencing difficult times. She IS NOT motivated by either money or fame, and she has rejected numerous offers from major record labels. In addition to being a published author of several fiction books, she lectures about singing and vocal techniques at a South Korea university. So Hyang, along with her husband, and some assistants arrange every aspect of her live performances; the music, backing vocals staging, lighting, etc.

The whole idea of immortal songs is to take established songs and re-imagine them, so I know your going off this one song with no other frame of reference, she could have sung this plain as day and it would have been wonderful but she was given free range and she jumped on it like not many people could have.but as for the original version you describe as special😳now I know it's about opinions but I personally found both Withers and Bolton's versions tedious at best and while this is not my favourite Sohyang song at least it is an interesting and if nothing else upbeat happy version, but as I said it's all about opinions and as my ex wife made clear for twenty years, mine was irrelevant so no doubt will you☹️🤭

I understand where you both are coming from. Especially if you keep the original in mind all the time and keep comparing then yes it's not gonna sound right. I think her execution viewed in isolation is still absolutely phenomenal and let's also not skip over the fact that even though she made it an entirely different Michael Bolton hear that very different song and he loved her interpreation. So it's all about the artistry here. You have to forget the original perhaps and if you can't that's a shame because it probably takes away from your capacity to appreciate this for what this is in itself. 6:13 Also it doesn't help if you don't appreciate a gospel style. She has a gospal background and this is literally what she brings to every single performance. I think that's what elevates every cover she does from what it was before, but if that whole style is not your sing and you prefer them to stick with what was written... then So Hyang in general is probably not for you. There is no performance where she doesn't go off and improvise at some point. She has that feeling for it though where I think it makes everything better, but that is personal taste.

@SongsandThongs: The version she sings has a very, very different arrangement because she just started in a competition with other popular Korean singers who were covering songs (originals or covers) done by Michael Bolton, who is a guest in the audience. She covers a wide range of styles to display her vocal prowess, as she had hoped it'll get her recognition by Western media. She won that episode, and the show won the Banff Award. Bolton even had her sing in his concerts in Asia. Sadly, she was plagued by pneumonia and bad health for years, and had to withdraw from performing after a few months; she even contemplated ending her singing career. BTW, the original is written and sung by Bill Withers, Jr.

You don't understand that it is a competition. If she sang it normally as per the actual song, she will bound to lose. Anyway, in this friendly competition, all other competitors covered Michael Bolton's songs or his cover, and they all changes his song drastically. Sohyang did as well.

Blatantly expressed that he's entitled to his opinion yet blatantly disagreed with MB's opinion 4:57 (You expected MB would have had the same opinion as you?) Not a fan of So hyang, but a fan of different interpretations of songs. The song was originally written to uplift someone. I would agree that it was a little bit overdone, but she sung it the way a gospel singer would. And the meaning of the song was not taken away. You are just used to its original tune. P.S. there's a fine line between entitled to your opinion and contructive criticism 6:59 At 9:11 goes back at you, my friend, with your opinion. Just because you don't appreciate the genre, doesn't mean you speak negatively. Plus, also how you disagreed with MB, it's his opinion, so get over it. Btw, the girl was reacting positively, until you infected her with your negativity. In the end, both of you reacted negatively all the way, leaving you both awkward and cringey with your reactions. Well, it's just my opinion.

노래에 대해 생각이 다를 수 있지. 나도 이 노래가 소향의 모든 커버곡들 중 가장 별로였다. 다른 노래를 더 들어보길 권함.

Oh man, I have been watching your videos from like 2 years ago. Yet this one is pretty disappointing bro. What you are saying at 9:10 is not a legit criticism at all. Yes, Lamborghini should obey the road rules and should not speed for the safety of the general public. But, since when we are ‘not allowed‘ to try a different rendition and ‘obey the original’ of all time legendary songs? Is it really a thing in our musical industry? There are some specific legendary songs that we should never change? And you call that we are creative industry? Especially when the original singer is invited as an audience and himself enjoying that a lot. In fact, later this stage, Michael Bolton invited her as a guest for his very own concert tour in the US and used this rendition as a closing together. You should youtube it “Michael Bolton with Sohyang” will get you there. Oh bro, I think you went too far on this one. I am not upset just disappointed tbh..
