Do you know the story behind her awesome talent? She has always been singing, but when she was 20 years old and newly married she got cancer in her stomach and had to go through several operation. Because of this, she can never have children. But being member of the church she got people praying for her, and she survived the cancer. Because of this she sees her life a gift from God, and she wanted to dedicate her life and singing to Him. She said she wants her singing to comfort people who are in pain, telling them “I see you- I’ve been there”. She has since then almost exclusively been singing at churches at home and abroad, at charity events, or events to honor other artist - meaningful events, and avoided taking part in the big music industry. She has been contacted many times by international managers who could help her getting famous here in the West (she is famous in Asia, despite her limited performances), but she has always refused. Now she is about 40 years old (she looks so much younger!) and the last few years she has been participating in South Korean music contests on TV. When she first started singing on these TV shows she was very conflicted if this was the right thing to do. But then she saw a woman in the audience crying while she was singing, and she realised that her calling was to reach out to everyone who is hurting, not just people in church. ❤️ She not only has an outstanding talent and the most beautiful voice, her singing touches people in a way that is hard to explain, a gift from above. Sohyang is a forty year old protestant Christian Contemporary Music (CCM)/Gospel singer from South Korea. She has been singing her ass off for more than 20 years now, mostly in churches and Christian benefits. She sings for God, not for fame or glory/money, which is a reason she is not known a lot outside of South Korea (many local and international companies tried to sign her, but she refused). A devout Christian and a cancer survivor (she lost as a 20 year old newlywed the ability to have children due to cervical cancer), Sohyang is considered by some to be one of the best vocalists in Asia, and from time to time she enters/gets invited to singing competitions in Korea where she impresses with her voice and stage presence, re-arranging known songs and covering them live. She is really a very inspiring artist and person, and over the years she has made a lot of pretty incredible performances, each and every one a sight to behold. If you want to see more from her, here are three more suggestions. Have in mind that Sohyang has incredible English singing performances, but seeing her emote in her native language is a sight of its own. 1> "Arirang Alone" - This live performance is a cover of the famous (in Korea) folk song Arirang Alone, a song talking about the re-unification of the peninsula and an end to the 70year old war between North and South Korea. She sang this on a signing competition called "Immortal Songs 2". It is a little difficult to describe what exactly she did with that cover, since she adjusted the song and the way she sings it (volume, style, pauses, acts etc) to correspond to the history of the Korean peninsula, and the concept of Han, as the lyrics bring it forward. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_(cultural) Suffice to say though, the end result is striking, regardless of the devastating power the actual lyrics convey to the Korean people. The song may start a little boring (from a vocal technique point of view), but the way she builds the performance to the climax and ends it is for the history books, really. In that particular performance, Sohyang also uses stage acting in a superlative way (a good example is the thousand yard stare she has, looking straight ahead and making you feel she is screaming to a wall, not engaging the audience in front of her). And this really brings to home the emotion and stage presence, and how they really play a big part on making a performance something more than the sum of its parts. Music itself becomes a storytelling medium, and the audience gets completely immersed and relates to the ethos and pathos the artist conveys. Dante800 For me, you raise me up is her number one opus magnum. This song was sung by Simon and Garfunkel. The original is mesmerizing and makes me envision the field of white daisies in the morning sunlight and breeze. Sohyang’s performance is like a giant sunflower moving around with gust in the bright mid day sunlight. Two have reached the zenith.

her 'arirang alone' cover will surprise you. yes it's in korean (but subtitled) but by the end of it, you wouldn't even know it nor even bother to read the subtitles. she's a gospel singer and all the performances you see of her are covers because she chose not to take the commercial route and release her own songs/albums etc for monetary gain.

To tell the truth, Sohyang together with her family CCM band (POS) have released over the years a lot (LOT!) of songs and albums. All of them are Korean Christian CCM/Gospel music though, a very niche genre that definitely does not conform with what we describe as a "commercial" route. And certainly, said songs/albums were not made for monetization purposes, but for promoting their faith. Two of her songs that were somewhat popularized more in Korea are "Dream" and "A day kissed by the sun". And both are superlative btw..

She pronounces her own name So Hyung. Like H and young together. I hear some say Hi Yang, but the H&Y are together. HYUNG. You were close. I used to assume it to be the A as well. No need to be sorry about her name. Great reaction. She does make each song hers, and puts so much emotion in them, that you do not dare look away. You can't if you try. I have listened to her for a few years now, and she is my top female vocalist on the planet. There are many great ones, but she is a one in a million with her range, which you heard just a tidbit of here, and her technique. One of her first vocal coaches was Michael Jackson's coach.... Seth Riggs. In some of the Korean talk show interviews, you know she is talking about him because they show a picture of the man while she is explaining her being taught by him.

I listened to this So Hyang's BOTW performance several times in the past couple of days and I think it's both humbling and inspiring just from a musician's perspective, and from a listener's position it's simply amazing, authentic, and so moving. Yes, her technique was incredible, but she didn't bludgeon us with her abilities. Her nuanced elements and powerful notes simply led us through the song. From what I have heard, "Arirang" is a very old Korean folk song with great significance to all of the Korean people. her cover of lean on me is something you should see it is awesome, she is great no doubt but at 40 years old is not going to be a world wide star outside of asia, don't get me wrong I love her, a wonderful singer and person but I believe that morissette WILL be the next huge world wide star of this generation, she is a more rounded performer that can dance and sing at the same time, sing any genre, plays piano and guitar, this is just my opinion , no hate :)

Mori is the total package. Looks, youth, tone, versatility, range, stamina, emotive ability, stage presence, dedication, personality and work ethic. She really has it all, and I am truly thinking (while vigorously agreeing with you) she will become one of the most iconic, successful and legendary voices of this latest generation. I mean heck, she is already superlative. Sohyang belongs to another generation really, and she is also not a commercial singer. She mainly sings for God and to console/comfort people, not for fame or glory/money. Which is a reason she is not known a lot outside of South Korea (many local and international companies tried to sign her over the years, but she refused). Sohyang is my personal bias due to a number of things, only some of which having anything to do with music in the first place. She is really a very inspiring artist and person, and my wish for her is to become healthy again, and keep following her dreams and her faith via singing, teaching or writing, touching people and providing them with solace. Most Americans do not react to her Korean songs. You should as they are all gems especially those from King of the Mask. If you do, you will try understand the meaning of music transcends all languages. I recommend a truly sad song. One that many will cry their hearts out. Listen to the song (with your eyes closed) or read the lyrics provided. Listen quietly. This song is from a Korean drama. It is about a wife who found out that her husband is cheating on her, and she is in deep pain as she still loves him dearly. The song literally cries out to your soul.
