I'm glad you mentioned the orchestra because JESUS! Sohyang is outstanding but the entire orchestra along with the backup singers harmonizing that "Ari-arirang, Ari-arirang" was just ridiculously good. If I were to define this performance with one word, it's epic.

In her name So Hyang the H is soft and joined so it flows together without the hard break. Arirang Alone is symbolic, it's about the history of Korea, the split between the North and the South and the longing for unity. So Hyang is one of the best but least known vocalist because she is a South Korean gospel singer who sings to heal and comfort. She has been offered but refused to sign up to large labels. She does not want her music to be compromised in any way but is in charge of what and where she sings. She is also a cancer survivor and the operation left her both infertile as well as with heb B, her health is not good and she struggles with Pneumonia. The second half of 2018 and 2019 she was very ill. I try and avoid songs where she looks ill not just because it affects the performance but seeing her ill makes me sad. In my opinion, here are some possible etymological roots for the word "Arirang": 1) Hebrew "Ari" + "Charan" (translated in English as "Haran): Ari means "lion" and symbolises the kingly tribe of Yehudah ("Judah") and is epitomised by the Messiah. Charan is a brother of Abraham, whose descendants moved east, so probably reached Korea. It is derived from Akkadian word meaning "crossroads", and is also used to refer to a mountaineer. 2) Ariel (ancient name for Yerushalayim and the holy mountain): The fact that the song speaks of scaling peaks seems to be related to these meanings, since the mount dedicated to Ari is Ariel, which is the ancient name for Tsiyyon, which is the holy mountain. In fact, in some versions, "Arirang" which might originally have been "Ariel" is the destination, rather than just something that lies on the way to it, because the Korean preposition meaning "to" (Korean 로) rather than the object indicator which causes one to understand it to be saying that one is climbing "over" the hill (Korean 를) follows the expression translated "Arirang hill" (in Korean prepositions as suffixed after the nouns, so "Arirang gogae-ro" would mean "to the hill of Arirang". 3) Hebrew "Ari" + Korean "Horang" ("tiger"): As mentioned above, "Ari" means "lion" and represents the kingly tribe, of which David and Yeshua are descended. I think it is rather tragic that so little analysis based on the symbolic aspects of this narrative has been done by scholars, but I think one of the main reasons is that people in general have come to reject the historicity of the Bible and its relevance for Asian history.

I think the performance and arrangement are amazing, but I consider this version of Arirang to be a sort of cheap politicised and ingratiating one, because it was meant to rally the Koreans around the Dokdo issue. I believe the original version(s) was/were meant to help remember past failures, and promote a repentant lifestyle while steadfastly holding to the Bible's promises regarding "Ari", which symbolises Judah, which is epitomised by the Messiah; and Ariel, which is the ancient name for the holy mountain called Tsiyyon. If you listen to the North Korean version while learning some basic Hebrew, you can see that it has probably concatenated various Hebrew words - where (the end of) one word is the beginning of the next word - in order to communicate a coded message. You can hear the following concatenated Hebrew words in the North Korean version, which is probably close to the original version, except the last stanza, which has probably been added in order to propagandise: "shib" (meaning "ten", but in Hebrew, it means "seven", "perfection", "solemn oaths", "rest", etc.); "shibri", which is the masculine form of the word meaning "seven"; "radah" (meaning "enlarge" or "expand"); "chomot" (meaning "wall"); "azab" (meaning "repair" or "restore"); and "aseh" (meaing "make" or do"). I believe the word "Baal-byeong" is actually a word play on Baal-Peor, which was the altar some idolators made to Baal on their way out of Egypt to the promised land. So the song is a reminder of past moral failings; the promise YHVH made to Abraham in Genesis 22; the prophecies contained in Matthew 10, in which Yeshua says that his hearers will not have evangelised all the 10 lost "houses" (tribes) of Israel before the Messiah comes (back); and the promise of being restored to the promised land.
