They did it. This weekend, Ireland secured just their fourth Grand Slam as they overcame both a once-in-a-lifetime nerves and a much-improved England to take the title on home soil. So how did Ireland secure it, what can England take from the game, and just how good are the boys in green?

Single best rugby channel for how teams are really playing the game.. best break downs and analysis by far. Love the play by play style.
"much like the version of Irish history I was taught in school: I haven't really mentioned anything England did." As an Irish person, I laughed so fucking hard at this. BRILLIANT.
I figured you'd do one, but the Jambalaya Sexpot tribute came a bit earlier than expected, and it was genuinely moving. Suspect you'll miss making up those names when he's hung up the boots...I know we will! Thanks for the tip of the head to one of our greats, and thanks for the brilliant analysis. A lot of pundits had pointed out the repeated short side work done by Ireland, but showing how they utilized England's own work rate to set it up was fascinating. You, like your vids, are class.

@@Formakiwi they boo'd cos they gave up and were routed for it vs Fr.. or at least how they see it (generalisation.. always exceptions) I think england played very hard. Their work rate was immense, along with their aggression at the ruk, gave Ie lots of issues. I think the biggest issue ive seen anyone having is the red card and what effect it may have had if it was, in their view, more reasonable at a yellow or warning. Madness when people think you shouldn't be punished for putting yourself in a dangerous situation and have that level of an impact to the head and get anything other than red. BoD worded why he thought it was the right call v well and other En pundits have said they are shocked he said it and argue it was just a rugby incident.. I really hope any appeal is rejected with the clarification that any incident like this is avoidable and punishable..

England didn't get smashed because Ireland was tensed from the very beginning. It's not England that did a great performance, but Ireland that feared to miss the event. Then, they got things the right way and England completely disappeared, again.
Squidge's joking beef with the Irish fanbase in previous videos put to one side, this was really nice to watch and listen to as a proud Irishman. So thank you
“Ribbons torn to…. Daves” 5:25 😂 Absolutely brilliant. I didn’t see it coming and it gave me a good laugh
rob kearney said on tv that day he was speaking to some of the players leading up to this game , and they told him this was the most nervous they had ever been for a match

"Much like the version of Irish history I was taught in school, I haven't really mentioned anything that England did." This actually explains a lot.

I found myself tearing with your tribute to Sexfingers at the end. Fingers crossed that it is the case. Thanks for your 2023 6N videos, Squidge.
Just one point of information: Jackie Kyle may have been the star performer back in 1948 but he was not the Irish captain. That was Karl Mullen, who also captained the 1950 Lions to New Zealand.
Thank you Squidge for all your hard work through the tournament , always brilliant analytics with a twist.
It's amazing how beautifully Ireland play with decoys. Your don't notice any of that live because it's all moving so fast and it all looks so simple, but when you break it down here, it looks so beautiful what they're doing
The Henshaw try reminded me of a try Australia rugby league scored in the 2004 tri-nations final. Two passes right then as the Great Britain defence is moving right, the ball went left catching the defenders wrong footed. So simple yet effective.

Pool B will be a dogfight. Tonga and Romania haven't a prayer but they'll still provide bruising physical contests, and Scotland will be desperate not to bomb in the pools for second time in a row. On recent results, you'd expect Ireland to top the pool but SA are always a stalking horse in World Cups. Regardless whoever emerges from those early rounds will be battered going into the quarters. Gonna be something.
FYI First Time on “home soil” (given that the Irish rugby team has traditionally/mercifully been beyond sectarianism) was in Ravenhill 1948 (N.I. aka ‘Norn Iron’) Some fool tried to argue with me that it wasn’t a grand slam as it was the 5N then :/

Interesting bit about the lions passing over James Ryan in 2021. Gatland recently said he opted out for personal reasons. Feels weird for him to make that public, and Ryan might not have been a guaranteed starter, but it’s good to know he would’ve made the squad otherwise (I assume)
This is brilliant, thanks Squidge! Absolutely love seeing how intricate tries that look fairly straightforward actually are

Brilliant vid again. As an Ireland fan, your comment about the game being similar to the 2011 rwc final was literally a thought I had watching the match itself.
he swings around to Ireland's side without changing bind. *Changes left hand bind immediately after
Excellent, entertaining and informative analysis. As an Irishman, I started the game on the edge of my seat, and quickly became so nervous that I had to stand up and walk around the room, as the well-oiled machine was sputtering a bit in the opening phases. Bu Ireland had too much skill and pace, too many plays (as you have so ably described), and too much fitness, and too much desire to succumb to the pressure they were obviously feeling in front of a packed Aviva Stadium with Millions of us tuning in on TV. I picked my team of the championship, which actually honestly and objectively contained only Irish and French. There have been some pieces covering the question of how many Irish players are the best in the world at their position, and there is a strong argument that this number extends to at least a handful (Furlong, van der Flier, Doris, Sexton and Keenan), but we also had standout performances during the 6N from Hansen, Lowe, Ryan, Iain Henderson, Gibson-Park (when he got his chance), Dan Sheehan, and Peter O'Mahony who is still strong and fit and skilful enough to have kept Conan out of the starting XV. One of the great strengths of the team has become wonderful depth, as Ireland did not miss a step even after all the injury woes. The future's bright - on to the World Cup!!!
Ok, you really are the Goat of commentators. The level of detail you have and relay is stunning. Really appreciate your work and channel.
Finally a video on Ireland!

Thanks for that , very well put together.
Another fantastic video. Was shocked that the ref didn't spot the numerous forward kicks in this game though.
Brilliant analysis as always! You made me feel a lot better about this performance, it was maddening in real time!
11:28 "all without changing his mind" - immediately shows Willis blatantly changing his bind
This is brilliant. The analysis on the first try is top class, I've not seen that level of detail highlighted by anyone else. Brilliant video.

Really enjoyed this. Thanks!
Congratulations to Jonny sexton a wonderful six nations career
Fantastic analysis as ever, Squidge! Chapeau, monsieur!
Thank you Squidge, wonderful analysis.
yeah the problem with the (rescinded) red was that it created space, which was exploited as the game went on, not least with England down to 13. It fucked the whole event basically, and the massive inconsistencies we're seeing do not bode well for the WC.
Really incredible video. Actually brought a little tear to my eye at the end.
Great watch. Super analysis

Can we talk about at 5:39 Hanson gets tackled completely off the ball 😂
Brilliant analysis once again. Well done ! The English defence was excellent on Saturday and just what Ireland needed, building for the WC. Thanks, England. 🎉
as a French fan, and considering the controversy surrounding Steward's red card, I find the references to the 2011 Finals of the RWC somewhat surprising, especially coming from such a rugby connoisseur like Sir Squidge. that 2011 game is famously known for particularly dubious referreeing from Craig Joubert, something I've seen discussed (and criticized) at length, even outside French circles. so I can't help and wonder if there's no innuendo lying underneath, or if I'm projecting too much there. congratulations to Ireland on the Grand Slam, they were a notch above everybody else, and certainly didn't need any help from the men with the whistles.

Indeed a brilliant analysis.. I thought you would pick up on us trying the play that got us the try on France with Doris doing a crash, fly half to tighthead back inside to Hugo to run it home. I saw Doris do the exact same shuffle before the crash and thought.. here we go! Only furlong fluffed the pass.
Wow brilliant analysis again, keep up the great work

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ as usual 🐙 ge.. you 💅 ed it... 💚. 🇮🇪 The ball in play law changes have really helped rugby 🏉 as a spectacle, but it's also suiting 🇮🇪 Ireland's fitness and game plan.
I enjoyed it immensely, thank you Squidge.

Absolutely fantastic analysis young man I never saw it that way greetings from Ireland
Great analysis, well done. Of course all the top teams at the WC will now be analysing what Ireland do and working out how to stop it, and also how to do it themselves, which will make the WC much tougher than the 6N. Can Ireland move to another level?
Great analysis. No one does it like you, Squidge

In 1948, Ravenhill was one of 2 designated home grounds for the Ireland team. I think that should count as having won on home soil.

Just to set the record straight, it was Karl Mullen who Captained Ireland’s first Grand Slam. Oh and best rugby channel out there. 💪🏻

In Ireland as well, I know it was the north but you know what I mean
As an englishman I can't help but think that the lack of FS was more of a factor in these defense breakdowns than you suggest. But I suppose that's fairly normal.
Superb analysis.
A fit Stuart McInally is maybe the only other hooker (from the northern hemisphere nations anyway) that I can think of who might have the pace for that Sheehan try. Ireland were something else this tournament and massively deserving of the grand slam, World Cup is going to be interesting!
Karl Mullen was Ireland captain for the grand slam in 1948, not Jack Kyle.
Fantastic video
