Something that I loved about this tutorial is that it really clears up the misconception that characters are just beating each other up mindlessly. There is SO much detail involved in the battle - between the concept of "clashing", "coin flip", altering "sanity", "ego" and "ego resources" and more. Well done to ESGOO for putting together a tutorial. Link below to their channel - please support, I have also subscribed to them on my main channel. Love their work. Thank you ESGOO! I can easily say that Evade is the best type of Defense skill by far. Useful in most situations, and can help you a whole lot in certain boss fights. Guards are good for very tanky characters, who you'd want to take the biggest, baddest enemy attacks if you can't clash them, and if they roll too high for evades. Counters are pretty bad on their own, but you often get them on characters who are, at least partially, built for countering. Some of my favorite units have powerful counter skills, such as Kurokumo Henchwoman Rodion, Sunshower Heathcliff, or Middle Little Sister Don Quixote.

26:40 I can't think of any instances where friendly fire from indiscriminate attacks can be generally useful, but EGO Corrosion by itself has a couple of niche uses I can think of: 1. Corrosion will save you from being staggered, which means if a sinner gets their sanity lowered to -45 and also gets staggered in the same turn, they will corrode next turn but they won't be staggered. Any risk of friendly fire during corrosion is a problem for the future you. 2. A lot of solo runs require you to corrode your sinner on purpose so you can have access to a bunch of "free" corroded EGO attacks during the corrosion turn, which translates to big pp damage, free passive for the corroded EGO, free clash wins (unless targeting RNG screws you up) and occasionally a bunch of status effects. You also don't have to worry about friendly fire since there's only 1 sinner, and it's also kind of a free un-stagger cheat as I said in my first point.

He's uploaded a part two intermediate tutorial by the way. (I just noticed you already got told this) On another note, there's a corrosion abuse solo strat. Specifically, if a unit has more than one action, you can usually only use one copy of an ego per turn. But if they corrode, they will only either use the EGO, or they'll take a useless "panic" action. This can allow you to potentially use an EGO 12 TIMES in a turn, although it takes very specific setup and planning usually.

Answering Final's question about saving staggered allies in his stream: (This is mainly based on my experience) About staggered allies, if it is a focused encounter then simply redirecting it if you can. Normal encounters makes you wish the enemy does not target any skills when combat phase starts but some skills (AOE skills or E.G.O skills that has a specific targeting priority) and the progress of the combat (i.e. if a Sinner has an unused skill after killing one it will simply be used against the next target) could help saving the staggered Sinner.

there's a secret trick that you can do with attack weight that is very useful against bosses like a certain depressed fox with extra summons, where if you first target the boss with the ego, it usually waste 4 slots of your attack weight and leave the summons alive. here's the trick. target the boss with other sinners skills first. doesn't matter what skills you use as we will click them away after. select the skill slots on the boss that you DONT WANT TO HIT WITH THE EXTRA ATTACK WEIGHT WITH THE OTHER SINNERS. Now target the boss or summons with the attack weight skill, this should now target only the summons or parts THAT YOU DO WANT TO HIT. once you set the skill with attack weight you can undo the rest of your skills and go forward as normal. Of course remember to not unclick your ego unless you want to reset its targeting

I'll add this comment I gave in Final's stream: In regular human encounters, enemy's skills can be redirected based on how many of your Sinner's skill slots available to be used. For example there was a moment where Ishmael redirected 2 of Guido's first 2 skills (That was supposed to attack Yi Sang) simply because there is enough Sinners not staggered and enough skill slots available to redirect Guido's attack. The order of Sinners targeting in regular encounters starts form the left most enemy's skill slot and takes priority in redirecting the enemy's skills.

There is also an offset mechanic. If you 'clash' an defense skill with an enemy defend or dodge you can prevent it from activating but effects which activates at the start of turn or combat are still activated, Offset won't affect counter

Another way for making a decent team is having units that have affinity advantages on the opponent even if your dmg type (slash/blunt/pierce) is resisted while have a few who have the needed dmg type to stagger the enemy. Also if a part of an enemy is broken (HP of the part dropps to 0) it will have it's dmg type changed to stagger unless stated through passives until that part is regenerated. Not every part of an enemy can be regenerated but some part can't be targeted anymore once broken while some remain targetable.

Don't worry, you don't have to start checking out sin affinities until a very particular boss later in the game lol. Even then you get by mostly on slash/pierce/lust. When you do start getting into affinities they're color coded and the combat ui is really helpful, so it's pretty easy to match to enemie's weaknesses anyways.

All defense skills are useful, but they have their own weaknesses. And their effectiveness really is on an ID to ID basis. Some IDs have crap defense, while others have awesome ones. Defense skills are very helpful when you know you're probably not going to win a clash, but don't want to lose any sanity. If you defend against a skill you're resistant to, you'll often take almost no damage, or none at all. Evade is best with high sanity. That one's pretty simple. It's awesome dodging clashes. Some IDs even have offensive evades, like maid Ishmael's which can do 2-3 turns worth of sanity gain when shen evades against the right skills. Counters are the riskiest, but some units are great with it. You don't get temporary health like you do with shields, but they're a great way to get some damage in on enemies who're stronger than you. Most of this stuff you won't need for the first few cantos though. Just let yourself naturally use the more in-depth mechanics as the fights get tougher. While the tutorial's pretty scuffed, the difficulty curve is pretty nice.

9:34 Generally, they're all useful in their own scenarios. Evade though happens to be incredibly strong compared to the other two due to being saved until it loses. It's a bit hard to give examples due to how particular any given scenario can be where you would want to use them, but two easy ones is if they provide some kind of benefit for being used, such as increasing sanity, or when you don't have a skill that can safely or at all win in a clash against something. Skills vs Defenses don't count as a clash, and that affects a lot how interactions work between two characters. Not sure why it's said the Skill Deck isn't gone over in the tutorial, believe it is and goes over how Skills are chosen in sets of 5/6(Uptie 3). ESGOO also doesn't go over it properly, but the increase in 'Offense Level' does also mean that your damage when hitting enemies increases as well due to how damage is calculated regarding 'Offense' & 'Defense' Levels. The number of "clashes" in a Clash also increase the the outcome of damage when it comes time to actually hit, this is another thing to consider on when you may want to use a Defense Skill. 17:50 Keep in mind this goes for the enemies too, yet another consideration on when you may want to use a Defense Skill lol. When you don't want to risk giving the enemy more sanity. 19:21 We currently still have not seen an ALEPH tier EGO be released. We only have I think 3 WAW currently as well, one of which used to be a HE until they changed it's classification. 25:37 Something important about Overclocking and resources; You can still overclock if you don't have enough resources, however it will act in the same fashion as your Sinner actually corroding, meaning it can still attack indiscriminately against your own characters. It will also put whatever resources you were missing into deficit, which prevents using that affinity until you get it out of the negatives. If you want to safely Overclock, make sure you have enough resources for Overclocking the desired EGO. 26:09 Most EGOs when corroding have a chance to target your characters. Some have more specified targeting, and that can indeed be exploited. For example, some EGO's prioritize 'Most HP' or 'Slowest' character. Some of this also means that some EGO's you can't control what it targets in a safe Overclock. Much of the game's finer mechanics rely on knowing what things do and how to make use of them.

There is one e.g.o. I can think of which is meant to attack your team, but let just say that Esgoo himself loathes it lol. As for defensive skill, evade is really good as the enemy attacks will completely miss, yes "attacks" if you are getting ganged on you can use evade to... well evade every attack. Made a lot of solo challenges possible. Guard on the other hand is bad for multiple reason 1. The attack will still hit, inflicting you with any debuff it might have 2. It's not actually a shield. Instead think of it as "Extra HP" this mean that if you are fatal to a 20 skill attack and use a 20 skill Guard you won't block all the damage, normally you will take 40 as you are fatal, a gurad will cancel out 20 damage, whereas an actual neutral shield would block it completely. Counter is just bad, people only use it for special effect it might have unrelated to being a counter skill. If the ID isn't built around using counter then it just won't get used.

Counters for certain units are really good. For example Sunshower heath its good because not only do you get to do damage but you also gain a reward for getting hit (sinking sanity decrease). Or Middle Don where envy a res it acts as her 3rd skill but it's not envy and she has more power to it. Counters are very niche but certain units pull it off extremely well. Can't say the same to gaurd units. Units like Ahabmael or Nclair is way too fragile for the gaurd to even save them from anything and you're better off taking the risk to win clash.
