Let's remember their names: Three-year-old Johnathan Ball was killed when two bombs hidden in litter bins detonated on a busy shopping street in March 1993. Tim Parry, aged 12, died five days later. There were many other victims, but this is the incident that inspired the song.

Wasn’t far from me, and I was in the same year in school age. That it stuck with me. The change was palpable after that. Also not only the shock of the boys but the location of the bomb, being that even places close to Liverpool which many deemed more Irish sympathetic weren’t safe. The issue always seemed to be attacks in London. But this changed the feeling, anywhere was fair game in their eyes. Scary times but which also just seemed normal growing up.

Such a great song! Dolores O'Riordan is the singer and she also wrote the song. It is a protest song, written as a reaction to an IRA bombing that had killed two young children, and the pain and anger really come through in the vocals and in the instrumental arrangement, especially the drums. Dolores asked the drummer to play as loud as he could and it really accentuates the anger she was trying to communicate.

Actually, it's an awful.song by someone who doesn't have any knowledge about the subject. I'm from the estate in belfast where this was filmed. She is seen as both naive and a bit of a traitor. A 'West Brit' is how she is often spoken of. She hadn't she'd one tear for Irish children who had been murdered. Then her 'it's in your head'refrain added insult to injury by implying that it was only the Urish in the North who were engaged in conflict. Awful revisionist nonsense and a shit song. Badly written, poorly played and produced by an amateur.

This was a protest song... "There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin - that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken'. [ ... ] We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." Dolores O'Riordan in 2017, on writing "Zombie"

This song is about the still unresolved conflict between Protestants and catholics in Northern Ireland. In 1994, when this song was recorded, the Good Friday Agreement that was about to bring some relief, was still in the future. The song is about a bombing where two innocent kids were killed. The singer is iconic Dolores O‘Riordan, she had a psychological problem and died in Jan 2018 after extensive alcohol consumption by drowning in the bathtub (like Whitney) at the age of 46. Her yodel-like singing technique is allegedly typical for Irish folk songs and definitely influenced by her heritage and culture. A great voice of the nineties! RIP Dolores!

Fun Fact: The Cranberries "Zombie" is a protest song released in 1994. It was written by the band's lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, in response to the 1993 IRA bombing in Warrington, England, which resulted in the death of two young children. The song criticizes the violence and unrest in Northern Ireland, particularly the impact on innocent civilians. The term "zombie" is metaphorical, representing the senseless and dehumanizing aspects of these conflicts. Also the song aims to convey the futility and human cost of war, questioning the cyclical nature of violence. It remains one of the band's most iconic songs and is known for its haunting melody and poignant lyrics.

To help you understand and grasp the context better, the phrase "Fun Fact" is commonly used to introduce a piece of information that is both true and interesting, often surprising or unexpected. The phrase has been adopted in various sectors, including business, education, and media. The term became ubiquitous, it aligns well with the information age where sharing quick, digestible facts has become commonplace. The intent is to engage the audience and add an element of enlightenment to a discussion. In a business/leisure context, utilizing "Fun Facts" can serve as an engaging method to break the ice in presentations or meetings, and social discourse making data or statistics more relatable and noteworthy for the audience and general public. Dolores O'riordan is from Ireland and passed away back in 2018 at the age of 47. This song is related to the troubles in Northern Ireland between The British and The Irish, a conflict that is centuries old but this is about the last 100 years. The spark for this song was the killing of two children in Warrington, England in 1993 killing Tim Parry (12) and Jonathan Ball (3) by the IRA (Irish Republican Army) exploding a bomb in the town centre. This song didn't go down well here in England because it was perceived as being supportive of the terrorists which was really a collective misunderstanding driven by emotion in the shadow of the event, as it was more about mans inhumanity to man as a whole and the devastating effects on those left behind to clean up the mess. The song could be applied to events that happened in The former Yugoslavia and Kosovo a few years later. The reasons I mention Yugoslavia is because the British/Irish conflict had been sporadic and periodic over that century, but when Yugoslavia split up which was around the same time as this song, the same type of urban/guerilla conflict that had been happening in the UK now and again, was happening all day every day across the entirety of Yugoslavia non-stop for a few years.

Zombie is a protest song inspired by the murder of two young boys, Tim Parry 12 and Jonathan Ball 3, in the 1993 Warrington bombings. They were out shopping with adults, looking for cards for their mothers for Mothering Sunday. The word "zombie" in the song refers to those involved on both the British and Northern Irish side who blindly followed orders without thinking for themselves. . Delores' voice is beautiful, the music is hard and the lyrics are hard hitting. the video shows actual soldiers on patrol on the streets there and the children are playing on the real streets. Kills me to hear it, my eldest son is only two years older than Jonathan Ball would have been, but it's a song that makes you stop and remember how fragile peace is and how easily it can be lost and everything that goes with it. This song was great at demonstrating the lower, heavier side if Dolores' vocal spectrum. For something more in the middle, check out "Linger". And to hear her hit the lighter, more ethereal end, "Dreams" is perfect. It's a far more uplifting, effortless, soaring vocal run at the end, punctuated by recordings of her own vocals to provide backgrounds. She was incredible.

I've never understood why Dolores got slated as a singer. She had an incredible voice . And the vocal performance in this song is drenched in pain and angst. Others in the comments have talked about the background of this song and thats what makes this so much more than just a protest song. She is another one thats left us far too soon.

also about this 2 kids: The song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, both of whom had been killed in the Warrington bombings, when two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in Warrington, England.[9][10] Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of head injuries.[11][12] 56 others were injured, some seriously.[9] Parry died in his father's arms in a hospital in Walton, Liverpool.[13] The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets.[13][14]

This song is a slice of my teen years. I liked it from day 1 but fell in love with it in my mid 20s there has seldom been such an impassioned plea for peace and to my knowledge never in music. Her voice carries the grief of a nation divided by conflict in one form or another for HUNDREDS of years. -May your notes ring true.-

The instrumental is strong and clear. The downbeat of each measure was distinct. I closed my eyes and danced a rumba. The singer had both a strong sound and a smooth complement to the instrumental. I love your comments and you have given me a new band to review for possible bance music. Again as always you are the best and my favorite.

I was in my early twenties when I heard Linger on the radio. Identify the band. Heard Dreams. Bought the first cd album. Was amazed and loved it. Bought the second Cd album. Zombie was powerful. I remember a small bit of a convo with a friend that we were enthralled with the power they displayed in appeal that we agreed they we’re going to be as big as U2. Went to the concert in Tampa. Remember always playing their music when I needed their magic. I was heartbroken when Dolores passed 😭 RIP

Such a powerful song about the numbness of war, bombings, repression, etc. So relevant then in Ireland / Northern Ireland and now, all these years later, in Israel and Gaza. As much as things change, they remain the same.

Dolores O'Riordan, From Limerick Ireland. raised in the traveler community, Her singing style was informed by the Irish tradition of 'Keening' which is a style of singing usually found at wakes and funerals, but less common nowadays. A beautiful, fragile talent that was taken from us too early.

They’re one of the biggest things in modern Irish punk and this is a song about the IRA and specifically ‘The Troubles’ time in Britain and Ireland. I’m sure everybody’s already pointing you to to all their hits, so my recommendation is actually Bad Wolves’ cover of this one. Dolores was meant to vocally collaborate on it. As kind of passing the torch two decades later. She unfortunately passed the morning she was scheduled to record, or they found out about it that day.

Keening: (of a sound) prolonged and high-pitched, typically in a way that expresses grief or sorrow. A traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland. You seem like good people, thanks for the reaction.

Are you new to The Cranberries in general? If so,I warmly recommend you giving Linger a go as well. If Zombie is emotional and depressing,Linger is the positive counterpart. Especially in regards to the sound. They got tons of beautiful songs though. Zombie and Linger is theyr most loved songs. And Dolores's tragic passing, actually is beautifully connected to the cover Bad Wolves wanted to make. Bad Wolves sent theyr demo to The Cranberries for approval, and Dolores loved it soo much, she wanted to sing her parts with them. Sadly, they found her passed away in her hotel room the day she were to meet up with Bad Wolves. Bad Wolves were of course shocked, but after some time they contacted the rest of The Cranberries for approval in still releasing the cover. The rest is history, and what Bad Wolves did is a description at the start of theyr cover,as they did the music video after they heard about her passing away. You might want to keep some tissues closeby. Heartwarming stuff! 🥰Its perhaps the best cover of a song i have ever heard. And what the band did, also makes it extra powerful.

I've said this on other channels but I grew up in Belfast at this time. I was born in 1980, lived on the Ardoyne Road in North Belfast. I recognise the murals and due to the terrorist groups (on both sides) we did have things like the army patrolling the streets regularly. Only a few streets down from where I lived there was a 30 foot 'peace wall' between the back gardens of two streets to keep the two communities apart and prevent trouble (it' still seems to be there according to Google Maps that I've just searched). And yes, we played, we fought with each other and we even learnt to climb up onto the roofs of derelict houses at fairly young ages and we did jump about on them as shown in this video. If I lived another 100 years I don't think that I could ever find another song and video that reminds me so much of my childhood.
