Hi Claire! Thank you again for your nice words ;-) I am wearing a headset, for me is that the only option since I change flutes a lot, so putting a mic on the flute is not doable, so yes: this is live.... And indeed it is hard to find the balance between the voice and the flute sound,: the trick is to play loud, but sing softly. I invite you to command on the version of "River Of Time" we performed last september: it will probably appear in a few weeks on KZread: I was not happy with the sound of the whistles on this version, so I bought whistles from another builder and I am reeeaaally happy with those

Thanks Jeroen, I didn't think of it being a headmic but that makes perfect sense. And I agree about the singing and playing. And I'd love to take a look at that, will watch out for it! Best wishes 😄🙏

@@ClaireHoldich Don't ever doubt or say again that Jeroen is not playing live :) This is Ayreon with Dutch musicians and performed in The Netherlands. Not like in the USA or the UK. We do things live here and perform in the real world as musicians. Not pretending to do so.....

@@hansolo2121 it was just a thought, and I feel a justifed one at that. As for playing live, you're welcome to see me do so here every week, and perhaps check out my socials for details of my own 'real world' performances...

Dear @hansolo2121 , Claire has every right to question that: flute is an extremely difficult instrument to amplify in such an ambiance. We flautists are always searching for the best way to amplify. It's only thanx to our superb technicians that they manage to make the flute sound as it did! in fact we had an emergency plan ready in case it wouldn't work out.

amplification will remain a challenge, ayreon is one of the best examples of trying just that, trying to get best result, much respected.

The album this song is from is called 01011001 (binar for the letter Y). In September 2023, this album was played live in its entirety in Tilburg (NL) during the Ayreon "AIR-ree-on" weekend (5 shows in 3 days) for 15,000 people from 60 different countries.

Excellent piping, in fact all the musicians excelled, especially the flutist at the end.

If I remember correctly Jeroen has a small skin colored mic on one of his cheeks. It's kind of hard to see and you have to really look for it. With Arjen and Joost I would suspect that as much as possible is done live. But they definitely have some tracks running. For excample the Mandolin chords in this one. You can hear the Mandolin comping while he is ending his solo and later you see him strumming his violin like an mandolin. I would lean towards Jeroen playing everything live but with the complexity of Arjen's music I absolutely don't blame them for unsing tracks live.

I was going to say it sounded like Irish or Scottish folk song but you noticed that already. Celtic. Then the band comes in loud and rocking. Are the aliens the rockers? Kind of like the modern (futuristic?) and the old timey celtic. I wish I could have heard the lyrics better. I got the River of time bit. I can look it up, methinks. Interesting song.

Ayreon fan here the aliens are known as the Forever and yes the singers are singing in the perspective of the Forever, they are talking about sending visions into the past to guide them back on the right track and move them away from their inevitable doom. The song after this talks about the scientists making the machine to send visions back into the past which gets recieved by a blind minstrel from 6th century Brittain as described on the first Ayreon album The Final Experiment. I do recommend checking this album out and the other Ayreon albums, oh and the Forever have symbols for names which is very interesting. My favourite character is the protagonist from The Final Experiment his name is Ayreon, yes that is where the project's name comes from.
