I have always been confused as to why people don't place their rucksack at the bottom anyway, bivvys are designed that way! That's why they are always so long. Heck you could probably even turn you rucksack upright and stuff it down there.

Guess a dry rubbish bag to put over a saturated rucksack would be good to stop it getting the sleeping bag wet.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this but the thinner your sleep mat, the better. A thermrest Xtherm really limits the space inside, whereas my thermarest prolite plus is ideal. It might be something to consider. I hope it works well for you, all the best of luck on the AT 🍀

The thing with this type of bivy compared to a bivy bag like the alpkit hunka is that this one has a bug net so in the summer months the midges are kept at bay for the most part but like everything they all have their pros and cons for example this weighs 600g more than the hunka

I have noticed since recording this video that an inflatable mat like the thermarest xterm which is 2.5 inches thick really limits the space inside so if you were going to get one I would suggest using a thinner self inflating mat which will make a huge difference. I have one from Aldi that I use it only cost €14. It's just something to keep in mind to make things more comfortable, I love using this bivvy they're so handy to set up and tuck yourself away out of sight. I hope this helps you out 👍

@@RamblingOn thanks for the update. I have a inflatable mat that's around 7.5cm (2.9 inches), so might be too thick for this bivy. Might have to look at another bivy or get a different mat.

The Alpkit elan which is extremely similar has a guy loop on the end. Its a Shame this one doesn't. The bag definitely helps with condensation. I leave the vents open as much as possible and I'm very aware of being too hot which would create added condensation so proper layering at night is important too. What they need to add is a vent on the other end like the one near your head along with one or two guy out points on the end and top so you can run a line across the top from end to end if you want more ventilation.

The main reason that the bivvy works well for me is that I love sitting outside a tent for as long as possible, so I only use the tent to sleep in. Obviously if it is raining all night a tent would better. I have a 2 x 1.5m tarp to pair with the bivvy for a bit of shelter. I have a hammock I am going to try out, cost me £12.. That could be a good starter purchase for you to get past your wife 😅

Cheers yeah for urban use it would be tricky, from your other comment I saw you mentioned using it without the hoop. Sounds liek a plan. How about something like the Alpkit hunka? No bug netting though thats the main drawback with it for me

I put my bag at the bottom of my Dutch Army Bivi in the same way.

I’m stuck in the land of ‘wanting to like a bivvy’ but it just doesn’t happen for me to take the plunge! It’s a bit like ‘wanting to like yoga’ - I just don’t!! The weight saving would be immense so I’d like to try one at some stage but for now my palatial MSR Hubba Hubba will have to do 😎 Thanks for the review - you’ve left me torn as ever - the hooped style does seem good but I’d prefer a 1 man tent for a similar weight for now. Although you know my history on man tents too 🤦‍♀️ I’ll try a bivvy at some stage! You’ve kept me in the market…👍

😂 I do yoga for me back, can't say I like doing it a whole lot but it is great. I love me little bivvy. Its dead handy to roll out and I'll be using it on the Slieve Bloom way very soon 😁 I would love an MSR, it's not a bad tent to be stuck with 🙂 Maybe a snugpak Ionosphere? They are slightly bigger but I dont know much about them spec wise..

I'm the opposite. I'm stuck in between a small hoop like this where if I have to I can not use the hoops, and my USGI which is ground level, because I was a travelling train hopper for years and still basically am so I need travel where I camp both in woods and in city where you need to stay real low to hide. I used my USGI bivy every night for years in all crazy weather and before that in the military so I love it dearly, you don't get wet in that heavy thing.

Yeah I had it out once in the mountains. There's a video there somewhere but I'd say it's best to pair it with a small tarp when you are in an exposed area.

As far as I remember the inner length is 230 cm and 6ft 2 is around 187cm so there is plenty of room. The bag is 40 litres and fits side ways in the end so it does help with condensation and keeps everything dry . All the best 👍

@@RamblingOn just to update Bought one aaaaaaaand am not enjoying it based on the fact that when i put an air mat in it, it pulls the foot box taught rendering the whole thing usless as i can not get my feet or a bag in. I will try getting a thinner matt but i am not hopeful. Sucks because this bivvi looked so cool. Not bothered about bags because i can leave them under a tarp but if i cant even put a matt in then damn im outa luck"(

@@amilzekria6635 I really need to do an updated video because there are things that I have overlooked and it is only when people like yourself point it out that I realise what I missed so thank you so much for getting back to me on this. You need a mummy style sleeping pad because the rectangular ones tend to get caught on the sides which reduced the usable length. If you can get an self inflating sleeping mat which is thinner it will make a massive difference to the space inside. I've bought a thermarest prolite plus for using with my bivys. It is a mummy style, has an R value of 3.2, weighs about 650g for the regular size and its 1.5 inches thick which is loads for me and I'm a side sleeper. I was using a €14 3/4 length self inflating sleeping pad from aldi which was 1inch thick, no R value so I paired it with a cheap foil mat and it worked well so I just decided to upgrade to the prolite plus. I have used my thermarest neo Air xtherm which is 2.5inches thick and that difference in thickness was not good inside the bivy. I hope this helps you out and thank you again 👍

Hey Dan, yeah I still use it. Not as often as I'd like to if I'm honest. I've had no issue with he poles but £40 is very steep. The Alpkit Elan is pretty much identical to this bivi for almost half the price. It might be worth a look

If I can pick your brain……I want something I can throw in my winter kit bag that me and a mate can hide in if we get trapped in extreme weather. Could you wedge two people in their kit inside this for a few hours and zip it shut to keep the weather out?

No there is not a hope of fitting two people in this. If you get a small tarp you could practice some configurations that you could throw up with trekking poles that would give you some shelter from wind and rain. Probably not great for extreme weather though. Otherwise you would be looking at either a dedicated emergency shelter or a two person tent. Always best to keep an eye on the weather and avoid the mountains if the weather looks too bad. Otherwise for sheltering from an unexpected heavy rainfall for example, a tarp would do the trick
