SNS 212 Part 1: Shaper Tool Head Rebuild
Ғылым және технология
Continuing on the shaper repair, I start getting the tool head cleaned up, filed, polished, and put back together. I also make and install the missing key in the bevel gear, the key that drives the lead screw down when using the power down-feed mechanism.

Adam, love the vids, I am an aircraft maintenance engineer, I wish that 1/2 of the apprentices I have worked with over the years had the same love of their tooling as you do. Watching you on the manual machine tools makes me think that I chose the wrong path. Keep it up, hi to Abby.
When you clean and polish, the results are fantastic. I enjoyed seeing the head returning to full function.

Really glad to see you wearing a face shield with the angle grinder. A friend of mine just had a piece of metal sneak past his safety glasses while grinding and lost most of the vision in that eye.
One of the best things about being a machinist...you make the parts that make the parts. Pretty much nothing is unfixable as long as you're willing to spend the time and money to recondition something.
Hope you feel better soon! Thanks for cranking out some great new content even though you’re under the weather.
Adam, your G&E is the sweetest I have watched being restored, one day long ago it was new, then it used and abused, now it’s like New May even better, always enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.!.!.!.
Lookin good Adam!! Your slimming down every SNS. Keep up the hard work. The shaper should count it’s blessings. Went from the basement of forgotten thoughts to the home of a true master craftsman😀

Once again, looks great. If you need an expanding pin that is stronger than the split pin you used, check out "spirol pins" ( yes that is the correct spelling ). A spirol pin is rolled sheetmetal instead of a single layer made round. Jeff

Sounds like roll pins to me
Adam thanks for the great video's. In the new shop has metal ceiling, what about using a mag base for your camera to hang from the ceiling, that way movable and more floor space. Keep them comming, Greg.
A very therapeutic episode, it's always nice when things are going to plan.
Adam, I love watching over your shoulder. Thanks for letting me hang out in your shop.
Small parts matter. 'For the want of a horse shoe nail, the battle was lost'. Good lesson behind that. Cheers.
Sorry you are feeling bad Adam . Get some rest and take care of your body.
Adam, NOBODY has luck like you cutting off those two tiny roll pins. Anyone else would find them shot all over the shop! LOL That shaper is going to be one smooth fine working machine! Eric
The "wavy parallels" made me crack up 😁😁🤣🤣🤣 never seen or heard of them, how cool !
Now that's the way to take care of machines; Great video, hope you get to feeling better, Greg
Wow, just chilled out so much I fell asleep at my desk! Don't take this as a bad thing Adam, love your tranquil vids, easy going and stuff.
When it comes to measuring tools Sharon Tomico is second to none. Light accurate and really well made in the good old and cold southwestern Minnesota, in the US of A. A very nice acquisition you got Adam.
What a crackup. I think I saw that Craigslist ad for the cabinets. I'm also looking for something like those. There's a bunch of Lista stuff on a ebay seller's site that aren't too bad. It's the shipping that makes them over my price range though. Good stuff.
I hope you feel better soon, and thanks for sharing all of the cool stuff that you do.
Those precision stones are amazing! You can instantly feel that the contact patch is essentially the whole surface of the stone. Super nice.
I bought a used Brown and Sharpe 0 size dividing head from an estate. It sat in an unconditioned shop for several years. The old timer got Alzheimer's and his daughter took care of him till he passed. Windows fell out of the shop, squirrels and rodents lived there for years. Your file work gives me hope that I can get this running again. He was sure tough on his equipment. Hammer marks all over and the dovetails have broken areas where it hit the floor.... several times. Thank you so much for the hints on how to round the edges and smooth the curved parts.
The devil is in the details. Clean and repair every piece, and when you are done, you have a masterpiece of American machinery! Nice job Adam.
Hi Adam ,I just Subscribed ,been fooling around with Machinist work at home since retiring in 2008I have had no formal training In this field ,what I have learned has been through reading ,and videos .For me Your videos are easy to follow ,and understand ,I Greatly appreciate Your channel .I'm having fun here in rural Missouri .Best regards ,CCampbell
Thanks for the update Adam; Those knipex pliers are good I have some good if you have weak hands
Yet another great "love for your tools" job, mate, LOVE your passion (keep It up)
Adam, Thanks for all your videos! I wish I had followed a different career path after finding your videos. Your methods and precision to everything you do is very inspiring. You now have my patrion support because I look forward to your sns specials like a kid used to look forward to Saturday cartoons. I'm in agriculture now and you have given me a great respect to our local machine shop. Now when I need repairs done I have a greater understanding of the process of what goes down in the machine shop. Keep up the great work you sir are a great guy.

I’m a nurse, I also dona bit of wood turning. I have a couple of pairs of the, they are so useful for holding small fiddly things. I love your videos. The are the highlight of my weekend.
Thanks Adam for the video sns 212. Nice to see the shining surfaces that your parts have now. I enjoy the time, if i look on a saturday evening over your shoulder. Have a nice weekend and many greetings from Duisburg in Germany
I love the care you take of your machines
Get well soon Adam. I had the terrible flu back in February and thot i was never going to get over the cough. I love those Vidmar cabinets. None better in my opinion. Every good tool room should have them in it. I've used Equipto and Vidmar and the Vidmar are the top shelf cabinets. Thanks for the update on the Shaper. Again don't stress yourself out making us a video. Get some rest.
Adam those Knipex parallel grip pliers would have squeezed the pins into the key with no effort. They are the most useful pliers ever made.
coming along good, it will be better than new when your finshed and got it working, oh you have got it working as seen in other places good job man
The surfaces came up like Brand New mate. Spot on
Thanks for another great video Adam. Best machining video channel on KZread easy. All the best.
Your video's particularly on the shaper are like a weekend pass with all rides at 6 flags!
Those Vitmar drawers are great! We have them at work. Just be sure to file the edges of the drawer handles! They are sharp!! You’re looking good man!!!
allways nice to see a new vid from you, great work and im learning alot watching your videos!
Nice job Adam!
Nice Work Adam
nice repair Adam. the pride shines through. great to see. Cheers
Thanks for another great video..... and greetings from snowy Northern Utah.
Always appreciate the footage Adam. For the amount of awesome stuff you get sent for free, you should go giveaways and give something back to your faithful viewers.

You sound like a millenial; "He's got so much stuff he should give some away". Most people sent him stuff in appreciation for his videos. I'm sure that if someone wanted their stuff given away, he wouldn't have a problem doing so. Adam puts a lot of time and effort into his videos that you are watching for free.
I've been trying to watch this video gour times already but keep falling asleep. Damn asmr effects
great job Adam. love your work
fantastic very entertaining looking forward to the next installment from this very interesting video
Good job Adam ! Big 👍
Moving along nice work ,should have taken picks of our shop 4 -36" Cincinnati shapers , Cincinnati and Gray planners .one planer was 8x40 table !
Love it brother! I wish I was there helping you.
Looks better than new nice job Adam.
looking pretty good... yea.. good? Holy cow man, that thing looks like new =D good work!
Adam, I did the same thing and bought beautiful cabinets where I could put everything away. It was almost a good idea. As I get older my memory fails me. Now I can't find anything.
Adam, why does it always look like you're drilling butter? What a wonderful opportunity it is to look over the shoulder of a master machinist and be tutored by him. Thanks very much for taking the time to make these videos!
Feel better Adam , Great work man , Will be better than new When yur done !
A large magnet below the vise would catch small parts as they fall during a cutting operation like that roll pin. One from a speaker is actually perfect. And if you put it in a ziploc bag cleaning the filings off is easy.
Great video. Thanks Adam
Great project to follow--Thanks!
Dont forget to have the bottom drawer out of those cabinets adam, theres normally treasure to be found ;)
Hey Adam. 2 am here in Thailand. I see you post a vid.. I'm in! 55 today, your vid is a birthday gift . Thanks brother, I hope you get well soon. Cheers from the land of sunshine and smiles.

I’ve been trying to figure out what is missing and wrong with mine and now I know how to fix it! Thanks!
Great job as always. Good video!
Great work as usual.. Adam I know you are not a Harbor Freight fan but on of the most handy tools in my shop is the 3” cut off tool, I cut a lot of small screws and threaded rod for my projects. That cut off tool is perfect for that kind of work. Just something to consider

James, I buy a few things from HF. I have bought a couple of the air grinders, including the angle sander. They usually work well for the money. I've been considering one of those US General tool boxes for my hand tools.

I have one of those boxes in my shop for my hand tools. I’m satisfied with it. For the money you can’t beat them
Thanks for the videos.
Looking like new man! Those cabinets would make a great desk/ work bench if you moved them apart and put a top on them. They are super stable and can hold a lot of weight.
Hey Adam I used to work in the cold a bunch and get insanely bad colds. What I found works very well is “theraflu” get the powdered one and mix it up as a shot not tons of water and drink it it. Do that twice a day for two days and you should be great afterwards. Hope this helps ya :)
Great video and thanks for sharing! Stay Safe Guys!
Crazy its like every episode i watch i can hear either an ambulance or firetruck in the backround 😆

tom will love the file work
I'm enjoying this tool head rebuild!!! ... I would have like to have seen a repair on the broken casting ... maybe cut a bit out of the spare one and braze it in? then ream just the repaired part to suit ... even just for looks
a 2 part Hour of Adam? Yesssss. Feel better soon bro!
I'd be GLAD to horse trade a set of Snap-On roll pin punches for a set of those inside-mics.. Awesome work!! ........again...!!
I see a couple bags of Kingsford and a couple of Everlast welders in the corner. Both good choices. I prefer lump and Lincoln, but hey, each to his own.
Outstanding !
Hey Adam - I have an Equipto 30x30" cabinet just like your two new ones, also with locking drawers, except that (1) it's on wheels (removable), (2) the drawers are thinner (5 are 2" and 3 are 2 3/4") and (3) it has a fair number of dividers and (4) a boatload of 4x3" and 2x3" bins. I'm in California, which is not anywhere near Florida. The whole thing is your's for free, but you pay the freight. I'm on a bit of a short fuse (a few weeks) because we're selling the house that it's in.
Nice pair of Spencer-wells artery forceps.

Most excellent. SNS makes my day.
I'm curious as to why you don't do wet sanding when you break out the sandpaper?
Calling Dr. Adam, calling Dr. Adam, ABOM79 you have a patient at 35:18. LOL... the blue rag drape reminded me of the operating and procedure rooms. LOL

A few weeks ago I was assembling a AR-15 lower and was putting in the spring and detent for the piviot pin, the first time both the spring and detent went flying, I found both! The second I only found the spring, a few weeks later I was doing another and when they both flew out I found them and the detent from the first one!
OOOOH Wavey parallels? I need to get those!
Ah yes those Starrett punches are the absolute best. Went through a bunch of other brand names before getting a set of Starrett!
Loving the vids, get well soon
Nice to know everyone uses Kelly clamps to hold small stuff.
Yet more progress restoring the G&E Shaper! Any chance you’re going to build up the chowdered end (where it looks like someone took a bite out of it) with a weld bead, and shape it back so it looks nice? Keep up the SNS and the good work! 😎
can u do gears on the shaper? u would need a workpiece holder like for radial milling
Hi Adam, another great video and project, I enjoyed it very much. At 18:05 or so, you show a "ball oiler", I am not a great fan of these and I am wondering if you could suggest an alternative to this. If there is one around. Cheers and thanks, H.
Adam, when you were using the hand file to dress the edge of that gib, why did you file from the edge into the surface, instead of from the surface off the edge? The opposite of what you did seems more natural to me, but I haven't spent nearly as many hours in a tool shop as you have. Thank you for your wonderful videos and I hope you recover from the cold.
I HAVE NEVER SEEN A WAVY PARALLEL , LEARNED SOMETHING NEW
Excellent!
Very nice stuff from John - awesome! :) Not sure whether you'll see this Adam - but do you by any chance remember who it was who suggested a great place to send an indicator for service? Maybe you know a good option? My Federal indicator is sticky. Some nice work on the tool head - looking pretty darned good. That's a big chunk of metal!
All the precision equipment of a good machinist shop and sometimes it comes down to the humble file.
What up man love the videos you make, all of them, I appreciate you putting the knowledge you've gained out there for the masses to benefit from, I've learned a lot from watching you, in fact I've been machining for the last few years strictly manually, I started school fir machining so i could make the money i should be anyway and its mandatory we learn mastercam but I believe that manual machining is the far higher artform and hope to never have to run a cnc. Anyway, thanks again for the opportunity to learn these things. Oh and if you don't want the scherr tumico inside mic set I would be interested in acquiring it, I'm from Minnesota and that's where they are made so I have a soft spot for the brand. Sorry for the long message wasn't sure how to contact you otherwise. Joel.
i'm amazed at the tools you have at home --what do you use at work--i had a friend who was from Argentina his test for a machinist was the use of a file
Why don't you use any "coolant" when hand grinding? I find that even soap water improves performance: save some efforts and get better finish surface even on rough paper. (Off course it requires to dry the tool plate when you end -- I guess the reason is different, isn't it?)
Just wondering, If you would have knocked that box of Wavy parallels off the vise onto the floor would you have edited it out?
I have a pretty old brass push grease gun I feel will work well on the oiler on that would grease work in an oiler?
Get into the vitamins Adam. I remember when my ex-wife moved out, I was concerned of things lacking in my diet. I was taking 500 units of vitamin C daily. I went 2 years without any colds or flu. Others would be off work and I would only get a cough or a bit of a stiffly nose, but never needed a day off sick.
@jonka1
6 жыл бұрын
Yes I have taken 500 mg every day for 31 years and never had a cold. Used to catch several every year before.
Would you making some drawer dividers be a worthwhile video?
Adam looking good.
