Snowmobile secondary clutch helix and spring swap, Polaris secondary clutch

A tutorial video showing how to disassemble a secondary (driven) clutch and install a new Helix and spring. I had to do this as I am adding pipes to my polaris xlt600 mod sled.

Glad these old vids stay posted. Really helps out the backyard mechanic on older machines that want to do things right! Much easier watching a demo than trying to follow a 25 year old manual with photos that look like they were taken with a potato!

Just used your video as a guide when replacing my secondary on my "new" 1992 Indy with one from a '99 xc. I wanted to be able to adjust it without shimming. Anyway, used the helix and spring out of the old one, and now with the belt in the right spot it works great! Thank you!
Perfect video for us that are getting nostalgic and are starting to get those tripples out again!
Thank you so much!!! couldnt for the life of me figure out why my driven clutch would open up so soon and bog the sled when you opened up from a stand still. the "pro" i hired to install my clutch kit didnt give the sheave that 1/4 turn before putting the snap ring on. Half the winter and almost $500 dollars into clutch service and parts, now finally after watching this video my sled stands up on end. Too bad winter is over lol.
Top notch video my friend, this helped me alot, thanks to the internet you can just about do anything now days!
Great Video and very informative. You provided exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks
Very nice video! I just rebuilt my Secondary on my '03 Polaris 700 Edge. It was my 1st time doing it and went well. 1st time I forgot to turn the upper sheave when installing. Figured it out though. Wish I would have seen the video to have it demonstrated. It should help others. Thanks!

How far did you turn it ? More than a 1/4 turn ?
@Slycrush Ya well I restore 600 year old Japanese swords so I need spotless hands for that work, and when working with solvents or oils/greases wear gloves as they are easily absorbed through skin - cancer causing. thanks for watching!
yami clutches are a dream to change parts on, can be done on the sled. remove 3 nuts and the helix and spring comes right out
I just took the secondary clutch apart on my 99 Indy 500 and cleaned, inspected, and lubed it. It was a little tougher than your video shows, but I have small hands. I made a makeshift jig that I clamped in the vise. The spring holes in my helix were not drilled through as yours are, so I used hole #2 (looking from the back). Everything seems to work well now.

Good job!
@FrankaDith yes some say don't lube and some say lube, this one had grease in it so I decided to try it. Next year I will rebuild it with new bushings if I have issues - a very simple design indeed. The primary gets a new spring and weights tomorrow - more vids!
Well that's about the simplest design Ive seen in Clutches ,there's nothing to change the Polaris Ive worked on had a snout 5 inches long also i was told not to oil grease or lub in any way, something about the drive belt getting messed up ,nice video as always !
@atomlab88 I got everything from SLP, tell them what you have and how you ride and they will set you up with what you need. Thanks for watching!
i just did my secondary and wow what a difference
Glad I can help thanks for watching!
@700XCPRS thanks for watching!
Any reason why you need to rotate the sheave 1/4 when putting it together? I’m just doing this for the first time so just want to make sure I’m not missing something. I was just planning to push it back together with a bench vise like how I took it apart
will changing just primary spring make it rev higher or lower? or will it just affect engagement rpms?
Hi, what are you using for the lube? Do you want to lube the jackshaft as well when u put it back together? One mor thing what happens if you turn it too far or not enough when you put the snapring back on? Thx Scott
Where do you buy the kit of spring and helix? i have de same driven and i'm interested to change the spring and cam for more power in low speed thank you
@lshobie Oh this clutch is the one on the back end ! ok my bad i had it in my head that WAS the primary ,its been a while .
Can you turn the upper sheave more than a 1/4 turn ?
What kind of lube
Great vid. Thnx. Just did mine, and I'm wondering what the three bold on the outside are holding. The little weights or that go through. Sorry for the bad name, very new to sleds

The wheel on the outside is used to adjust your secondary when your belt wears to keep it up where it's supposed to be.
hi i have a classic sled in mint condition its a 74 Johnson winkle rotary . i have to tack it up pretty high for primary to engage which it does but the secondary i can move with hand but when its tacked up primary engaged the secondary seems like its binding it like jumps forward just a lil then stops but if you get the sled moving she will fly its like i have to push the sled to help it go sometimes and sometimes no dont understand ? but bro YOU ROCK !

It sounds like ur secondary needs pulled apart n cleaned try that if not get back at me
Great video ;) Just a question about the snap ring orientation. I'm confused because you said to position it with the narrow edge to the engine side but the master repair manual said "Always install snap ring with chamfer towards helix" that means that the wider edge is on the engine side....

Good point!
I would really like to know how the secondary spring adjusment changes the clutch engagement rpms..
@leegriep75

It doesn't. Secondary spring rate changes up shift and down shift characteristics.

Seconday adjust's rpm by holding back the shift with stiffer spring

It can affect top end and bottom end depending on how you adjust deflection.
What brand snap ring pliers are you using? I can't find anything big enough or strong enough to get the snap ring off without bending the pliers Thanks in advance

What if i did not clock the clutch before I took it apart????
@cpritty8878

doesn't matter, just push the helix down with your hand, he does that so it makes it easier for the helix to move so there is no pressure on the snap ring
What spring setting would make it most snappy out of the hole low end I have a 1-5 its in #3 now

Well im just wondering is 1 better out of the hole or 5 noone seems to have the answer
Is there a way to adjust deflection on this type of clutch. What is that plate on the outside for? Looks like it could be whats used. Any help would be appreciated. I've never adjusted this type before. More.familliar with skidoo and yamaha.

I modded my wife's 93 xlt 600, and dropped a 144" track and skid with help from some of your videos. You should see how this thing performs.

it will adjust so belt will either go up or down in the sheaves
what kind of lube to use on the inside diameter of helix?
it is tricky!
Hi, what if the clutch was not clocked before the snap ring was removed???
@GASSmallEngine

Snap ring would not come out.
So I did this myself first time doing it now I got it all back together no problem but when I turn it by hand there is no spring pressure and it doesn’t spring back why is that
@donruf4992

Needs to be turned more than a 1/4 turn
i have no idea how you held that thing by yourself to put the snap ring in there, sure was a biatch to do lol.
will changing just primary spring make it rev higher or lower? or will it just affect engagement rpms?
