Snowboarding: How to Custom Mold Snowboard Boot Liners

Спорт

If your snowboard boot liners are heat moldable and you want to do it at home, we’ll show you how: You’ll use rice, a microwave, a short two-by-four, and several pairs of socks. Shop REI’s selection of snowboard boots at www.rei.com/c/snowboard-boots.
Transcript:
The most basic boot liners mold to your feet as you ride, while others can be heat molded for an immediate custom fit. If your liners are custom moldable and you want to do it at home, here's what you'll need: three to four pounds of uncooked rice, microwave, a short 2x4, a couple old socks you can cut up, a pair of long, thin tube socks, and your thin wool or synthetic snowboard socks.
Start by filling the long, thin tube socks with rice and tying a knot in the ends. Put a bit more rice in one sock than the other. Make sure the rice fills the socks uniformly so they don't get hot spots, and microwave them. Use this chart to determine how long to leave them in the microwave. Remove the foot bed from your liner and replace your liner in your boot. Keep your boot loose to make it easy to insert the rice sock. When the socks are ready, pick up the more full sock by the knot and place it in the liner. Make sure the boot is very loose and tap it on the heel and the toe until the rice has fully filled the foot section of the liner. Then close the cup and place the other sock in the top. Lightly tighten the boot to keep the liner even. Leave the rice in the liner for ten minutes.
While you're waiting, you can cut the toe off the two old socks. Wearing these as extra padding will help expand the toe area of your boot for some extra wiggle room. Put the toe cap socks over your toes and pull your snowboard socks on. Make sure they are smooth and wrinkle-free. To keep your legs in a natural position, you'll want to wear both boots during this process, even if you're only molding one boot at a time.
After ten minutes, remove the rice and put the foot bed back in the liner. Then place the liner into the shell, step into the boot, and loosely tighten it. Make sure to keep it far looser than when you actually ride to avoid overcompressing the foam. Step onto the 2x4 with your knees bent and your feet shoulder width apart, and lean forward gently. The board will help you naturally flex the boot. After ten minutes of molding, the liner will have cooled enough that you can take it off and repeat the process on the other side. To recap, microwave the uncooked rice inside the tube sock. Add the rice and let it heat your liner for ten minutes. Prepare your socks and put on your other boot. Step in and flex the boot for ten minutes.

Tried this today, boots were nice, definitely the right size, but super uncomfortable and hurt my feet. Now that they’re molded, it’s a perfect fit and I’ve never worn anything more comfortable ever. I’m so stoked to hit the mountain this weekend!

I bought some 2nd hand Burton boots with the Inspire 2 inners and they were so tight around my toes even though they were the right size. I thought my feet had gotten bigger or that these boots weren't true to size. Did your tutorial and the difference is night and day. Toes feel a lot more comfy and have wiggle room. Looking forward to hitting the mountain next weekend and giving these boots another try. Some tips I'd like to share having just done this tutorial. Get a small paper cup and cut out the bottom. Use the cup to funnel the rice into your tube socks. So much easier. I had trouble getting the socks to get right into the toes of the inners because of the rigidity of the boot. Decided to remove some rice from the socks and take out the inners from the boot and push the socks deep into the inners so it was flush with the toe area as this was where my main issue was. I left the inners out of the boot for 10 mins while the rice was in them and then put the inners back into the boot. The only issue with doing it this way is that the inners are so soft and mouldable that you might have trouble getting the inner in the boot. In the end I put on the inner first and then sliped both my foot and inner into the boot. Hope the above helps someone and thanks again for the tutorial.

I tried this on my Women's Burton Felix Boa Snowboard Boot. It seems to have worked but will test the boots this Sunday and see how they feel. Reused the sock filled with rice for both boots. A tip for a woman's boot - put rice in a smaller sock for the toe room. The big sock will not drop in to the far end of the toe edge.

Great Info! First I didn't even know my boots are "heatmoldable" (Burton Photon). First I bought the boot to big, I could return it and the smaller one was just hurting all over the place on my first day riding... After heat molding with this method the boot fits perfect! Thanks a lot! Saved my feet!! :) Extra Note: The ricesocks are great to put around your neck when having a stiff neck ;)! Thanks

The other side of the equator. Not necessary, but if you want the molding to work perfectly, do it.

Works pretty well. Not perfect. Rice type matters. The cheap long-grain stuff burns up 30 seconds before the end of the microwave cycle. Probably some moisture in the sock. Anyway, better than before, but these Burton Photon BOA boots haveREALLY tight ankles.

Hello from the future where the local shop now charges between $40-$60 to heat mold your boots if you didn’t buy them there.
